Tomo, correct your a 8 pin vs. our 10 pin unit. Both cars and unit we are all throwing a code some where down the line.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Hey you were barking up the wrong tree, would you rather wallow in inaccurate info? Sorry you thought it was attacking you, it just happened to be you posting the inaccuracies. You are getting a quantity adjuster error. it's hitting the limit. this triggers a code.

Now boys no fighting, we are just talking. So far from this thread WOOCHOW went to 9000miles so far with no codes. I went 2000 miles then threw the code, then again at 4500 miles with the IC lower pipe blowing off. Total miles of my 02 is 5500miles.

2002 - No cels, but I never leave my key in like they are talking about. If the key is in it, it is going somewhere. Oh, and on the 02s if you stall you have to turn the key back to off, it won't just recrank.
-agreed, the box rocks-

2002 Golf with VASB from Diesel Services. Have had one CEL (w/ glow plug light blinking also) after a stall and immediate restart (did not turn key to 'off' position prior to starting again). CEL cleared itself overnight and hasn't returned. Overall, very happy thus far.

Birdman, good idea. For those of you getting codes, check idle IQ in VagCom. I would bet that it's at the low end of the range... <3.5 or so. Crank it up a point or so and see what happens. You'll lose a tiny smidgen of power, but it could fix the CEL.

Procedure for recalibrating injection quantity at idle is in the TDIFAQ maintenance section. Or you can go to the troubleshooting section pretending that you have a shudder problem (because this is the fix for that problem) and link to it.

I checked mine with the VAGCOM to see what I was set to - it appears, at idle, engine relatively cold, that I am at 3.2 (it jumps periodically, but it's right around 3.2-3.4 range) - that's in basic settings.

Go to adaptation, and look at the value there, it is still the same. 3.2 at idle (idle speed is 903 RPM)...

I get no MILs or DTCs.....

Just for other's reference.

ok - I'll try this tomorrow before work - also this time with a warm motor - to give everyone a reference on a 2001 with no codes.... I am already starting to "mis-un-remember" the values.... I am pretty sure it was 3.2, but it could have been 3.6..... crap! Screenshots this time!

ok - after running the car to go get some fuel (VASB unplugged) - got home and measured the Injection Quantity.

It is 3.2 @ 88.2 degrees

Connected the VASB and tested again.

It is now 3.0 @ 90 degrees

I would attribute the difference to temperature, not the box being removed or added, but that's my theory.

I feel like my number is out of wack. Any input from anyone? Car is running strong, 3rd pulls like a mother. Maybe I should stick with that old saying, "If it's not broke don't fix it"

Anywhere between 2.2 and 9 according to the Bentley CD is all right. But some need to run above 5 to run without throwing codes with Modded cars.

I've had the Smart Box on my 2002 for ~12K miles, no CEL to date. The only fault I've had so far is a "blinking" glow plug light (before the Smart Box) that turned out to be a ground fault error (at least, that is what is was told). That was cleared and there've been no faults since.

We just returned from a trip along the east coast. Went 2797 miles on 49.5 gallons (> 56.5 mpg). Not bad for a loaded car with the air conditioning on most of the way!

So far so good with my ride. Have not had a code for a couple of thousand miles now. Not to put a jink on me, hopefully my tdi got use to the box.
I'm not going to start re-adjusting certain setting, I'm a firm believer it will set something off in a bad way. Vmb not broke don't fix it.

I've had my VASB for a week now and I got my first CEL with flashing glow plugs, thanks to this post and VMB7's advice it cleared. Oh, I also have a 2002 golf...

Jeff B,

Since the first post my car has been running like a champ, no cell except what I posted early. I learned don't hammer in 1st gear, get on short shift to 3 grand then hit 2nd. Then proceed to get on a little more. Ever since my little trick, no cells! Box is great in my eyes.

Golf 2k2 110PS+VASB no codes at all. i Stalled it 4-5 times so far , and there were no codes at all.

as far as the first gear is concerned, id rather change it at 2500 so that to get the max torque on 2nd (1950)

VASB rulessss....

I've had the Jannetty Racing version of the VASB for over a month now. No CEL's. No hit in mileage. Just more torque where I want it.

Had mine since the Janetty Racing group buy, no CEL's, but very poor fuel economy. (Got 33mpg last tank, 5spd.) Normal is around 37-40, so I'm going to unplug it for the next tank and see if it improves at all, should tell me if it's the smartbox or not. The intake looks OK, not clogged much at all.

I've been at the 43 mpg for the last 2 months. Same fuel, smart box and colder weather now. 37 and below is not right. I have a heavy foot and at 43mpg but I have a 5sp. If its auto? maybe 37 could be right! No problems, just can't stomp like a 5.0. Jeff's right 2500rpm shift 2800 is even fine, hearth of the powerband. No more quanty adjuster code. You learn how to feather the pedal and use the torqe without the over rev!
