Hey guys! As some of you are aware, I am expecting a baby girl in April. Well, no matter what my wife and I were expecting, she decided to inherit her mother's impatience. We had an action-packed Monday morning last week, and now I'm a proud daddy of a premature baby girl. Born on February 22, 4 lbs 14 oz. Her name is Kianna Emma Kratochwil.

Baby is doing well, but has to stay in the NICU for at least another week. Standard protocol is to hold premature babies until they are 36 weeks old. The hospital has no net access, so that's why I haven't managed to post anything earlier. As hard an experience it is to have your new baby in the NICU, it's also really amazing for first time parents. The nurses are awesome, answer all our questions, and it gives us an opportunity to get comfortable with our new child before bringing her home.

This post is worthless without pictures, so see below:

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Thats great news John. My first child was exactly the same situation as yours. She was due Feb 14th and was born Jan 9th. She also spent the first 2 weeks of her life in the NICU, so I know how difficult it is. But ours turned out well, so I am confident everything will be fine for you too. Again, congrats on the new addition to the family.

Thanks everyone! Nigel, good to know your daughter is doing well. My wife is all worried about our daughter and developmental issues from being premature. I know 4-5 people so far with premies and no problems at all.

I'm confident that she's doing well. She's feeding well, got no tubes in her, and is simply on a monitor to make sure everything is okay. Funny thing is that my wife and I have become so self-sufficient in that place that the nurses keep saying they're going to hire us back once we go.

Absolutely fantastic! Congratulations to you and your wife! No doubt everybody has told you "they grow up so fast"... well, they are right. Enjoy every second; they are fleeting.

This made my day - thanks for sharing.

Congrats! Have one on the way myself, wife is due in Sept.

4.5 lbs is actually a good size for a premie, our 1st was 10 days overdue and was still
only 7 lbs.

My friend, my daughter Evangelina was born premature as well, 4 pounds 4 ounces. She is 13 months old now and you would never know. She is Tall and lean and is the best little girl ever. You worry, but she will be fantastic! If you have any questions, PM me. ALL THE BEST!

Got some good news yesterday: looks like Kianna might be released today and finally will come home! YAY! Apparently the nurses pushed to have us released as we were doing all their work. My wife and I would come in, unhook the monitors, change, dress, feed, etc. Once done, rehook everything back up, and fill in our own charts (well, more of a note paper which the nurses then used to fill in their official charts).

That's not to say that Kianna isn't doing well, as they wouldn't release her otherwise. As great an experience as it has been, I'm tired of running around to the hospital all the time, and am elated at the thought of having the whole family at home finally.
