Dear I-phone snobs,

Please use the calculator app to find out why your wallet is lighter...

Sirius at $77 per year
vs.
Data Plan for I-phone @ $30 per month = $360 per year.

$360 per year is not free music!!!! :p

I thought TDI drivers were frugal...

Cheers,
TDI DH-MX
That's probably the silliest comparison I've seen. I ALREADY HAVE the iPhone and am already paying for data plan. I can't use the iPhone without it. Going with your "math" I'd be spending an EXTRA $77/yr for Sirius.

I've had Sirius and I've had XM. I wasn't that happy with it. My point was that there are other options out there.

Ahhh... Missed my point.. There were many I-phone users crowing about already get free music from their I-phone....

$360 > $77. If you don't get this math, you must work for the guv'mint!!

No, it's not free... I never said it was. MY point is that I don't have to spend the ADDITIONAL $77/YR for Sirius. That $77 isn't going to pay for my iPhone data plan.

If someone said it's free, I can only surmise they meant they didn't have to pay for the app, ie: Pandora.

Incidentally, I AM working for the government!:D

Well if you ALREADY have the iPhone then you don't have this issue. I'm sure no one goes out and buys it for the ability to stream music, as you can do with with Android and blackberry with the same data package. Are they snobs too? lol

first, its iPhone.. not I-phone.

second, you realize you can store music on the iPhone and use it as an iPod which doesn't use any of your data plan. you can stream it via bluetooth, or via the iPod cable or even the aux port. People are already paying for the data plan.

third, as stated above, i highly doubt anyone bought ANY smart phone simply to stream music.

and thanks for that math, because i didn't realize the $77 sirius subscription also allowed me to send sms, mms, email, view websites, watch and stream videos photos and countless there items in addition to music. If i knew i could do that with a sirius radio, i wouldn't have bought an I-phone.

So sorry.. in this case .. $77 just for RADIO is a bad deal (by the way, you get it for free with AM & FM) $77 > $0 (am/fm). #fail.

i use tunein app for blackberry (also available for other phones), get much, much better bitrate for internet radio, and apparently, Bell Mobility isn't tracking its data usage. so far it's free for me.

I'll have to check that out considering I'm in the middle of the Iraqi desert and there's only one AFN station. Thanks for the tip, Barrie.

does sirius satellite radio give you 55000+ stations like the tunein app does?

haha, i know the answer.
How do you choose what to listen to? Do you bring a second person with you to fiddle with the phone so you can focus on driving? Or maybe each radio station just plays one song all day :D

I am new to Sirius and just signed up at the dealership. From what I read here I'm paying too much ($65 per quarter I think). But I am only listening to about 6 stations regularly. Do they let you choose stations a la carte for a lower fee?

^ Same...I think I'm not happy with it anymore. It was cool at first (not having sat-radio before), but the "new-ness" has started to wear off; and the price is a little steep. I have a 3-4 hr drive round trip, and in the course of that time, I hear the same songs on each station a dozen times. And tomorrow, guess what I'll be hearing - you guessed it...the same songs...again. As a matter of fact, I've even switched from music channels (like Lithium and the Hits) to comedy channels (like Blue Collar and Raw Dog) to break the monotony...but even on those I am starting to hear the same skits as well...

Really? You mean to tell me of the umptenth-gazillion people in the world...there's only a dozen comedians and bands to select your playlist from?

You know what I find amusing...the company itself. Seriously...if you don't know - it used to be two different companies: Sirius and XM. Then they merged...but wait a minute - if you HAVE Sirius and are tired of their service, you can call the XM "dept" and ask them for their service and competitive rate...and vice versa...lol I mean - hello...did the entire company as a whole miss the memo on this one? Aren't they called SiriusXM now?

tunein has all of their stations categorized, and you can set presets just like on the headunit. it takes a second to switch stations, just as it takes a second to switch stations on the headunit.

i regularly stream 192kbps mp3 stations with tunein. sirius only offers 32kbps aac. and i can continue to listen to the streams under bridges and underground, unlike sirius.

tunein also allows you to do general searches for artists, songs, genres on the fly ala google style searches. sirius can never do that.

hey, maybe Bell can't track streaming audio because there is no start or end point for file sizes, etc, or that the bitrate is variable. i dunno. someone have rogers or other cell network to test tunein?

i'm on the cheapest data plan for my blackberry, and was wondering a while ago if the $30 for 6GB plan is right for me. i guess i won't be touching that plan unless Bell catches on to this loophole.

I agree. I usually like Electric Area or BPM, but it's the same crap every day. Sometimes you hear something new, but not only the same crap, but a lot of the shows on there are crap as well. The only thing that seems to play more variety are the classical stations, but even those play a lot of repeats. The only thing I like about Sirius is the traffic updates.

And yes, I know I can just use google maps, but it's more convenient seeing it on the radio, so I don't get distracted with my phone.

Sirius/XM

Sorry some of you aren't in love with Sirius anymore. I've had in my family's 4 vehicles for 4-5 years and I still enjoy it. No finding stations of my taste when on trips-listening to almost all the NFL games instead of only local games and having a dozen channels of my liking to choose from instead of maybe one from local fm. My only issue with Sirius/XM is their "iffy" customer service.
