Searching feverishly for a good deal
So, I just got my 2000 Golf, and the motor cover was sitting inside the car without the bolts to mount it with.
Anyone know the size bolts I need, so I can just run to my local hardware store? Or are they some weird collared bolt?
Thanks in advance Guys!

It is studs and nut. They don't have bolts. If you have studs still on engine and rubber mounts on cover you need 6mm tread nuts.

I'm bringing this back. The two attachements in the front are studs/nuts, but the one in the back is a bolt. (Jetta 2003). Does anyone know what size bolt that is?

Since we are on the subject, does anyone know where I can get one of the nut/washer that holds the cover on? (2002 NB)

I managed to loose one of mine and I am using a nut and washer. It would be handier to have the washer/nut combo.

Thanks

If you have what looks like a bolt back there, it is because it screwed out of the intake manifold, instead of the nut coming off the top. I had the same issue, ended up stripping the intake manifold, and had to do a threadfix. Just do the PD engine mod. Totally worth it. http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=223750&highlight=intake+manifold+thread+repair

I bought this car new, and as far as I remember, it always had a bolt in the back. I always found it strange that they would use 2 different anchoring systems.

While we are at it, does anyone know where I could buy new insulating material for the engine cover? Mine has been slowly falling apart.

Could you take a pic of this bolt? I'm intrigued. As far as insulating material, self adhesive dynaliner is a great alternative.

I can't take a picture of the bolt because it is lost. That's why I'm trying to figure out what size it should be. It was a black bolt, short, with a wide integrated washer. I have a vague recollection that it was a different size than the 10mm head for the nuts, but I can't be sure. It's been gone for a while, and the cover has been sitting in my garage for about 2 years. Jetta, 97 posted that it's probly 6mm thread. What does that mean, should it have a thread pitch and a diameter?

I'm no guru, but I'm skeptical that it was ever a bolt. I have not heard about that kind of a setup on an MK4 TDI, so I can't be of help on the size. Usually what happens is that the rear mounting stud--that the nut screws onto--starts to screw out itself, and eventually to strip the intake manifold where it was installed. For a while, it looks like a "bolt" b/c every time you unscrew, the whole mount comes off instead of the nut on top. Could this be why you thought it was a bolt? I suspect the reason that it is lost is because the nut eventually did come off the top and the whole thing fell off.

The other possibility is that a mechanic stripped that rear nut/stud and replaced it, unbeknown to you, with a bolt. It happens all the time b/c of the softer aluminum of the intake manifold.

I just went through this ordeal myself, and I also thought the rear was a bolt for a while. Again, I recommend you just take all those studs out and replace with PD style pop-off ones. Easy mod and works much better than unscrewing the nuts every time.

You may need to do a threadfix on your intake manifold if it is indeed stripped. Good luck.
