Sick 01\' Jetta TDi

Dear TDIers,
I just got back from a road trip to California in my 01’ Jetta TDi. I live in Salt Lake the round trip to CA is approximately 1,200 miles. On my way back I noticed the car lost a lot of power. Very slow acceleration in the lower gears. Top gear will only allowed me to go 75mph on flat surfaces. Small incline result in speed lost. My top speeds at some hill were 40mph (I started out at 80mph). This is for both 4th and 5th gear (I tried both with out any speed gain). Usually I can stay in 5th gear at speed of 80mph+ on the same type of incline.

After searching this forum I got the idea that it might be the air intake. I checked the air intake with some noticeable dirt. I cleaned it with water (best I could) with no success.

I am also looking for a good place to have the TDi look at in Salt Lake City. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
-Vinh

What you are describing sounds like the classic MAF failure. Some people like to replace these with the MB Pierburg MAF.

Man, wish I could have got a picture of this one.

The snow screen had about an inch of solid SALT across the whole surface. I pulled the snorkel, and the salt flew everywhere. Pretty cool actually. I guess Vin was in a "salt blizzard" traveling through the Salt Flats on I-80. The salt fines made it into the MAF also, there was visible residue.

Screenectomy + Maf cleaning = problem solved.

Now for the RC and nozzles!!

Upsolute is ok, but RC is better IMO. I had UPS for over 100k miles, then switched to RC, way nicer drive, faster, and the smoke went away.

Hmmm....Wonder what my air filter looks like? I haven't really dug into mine, but I've heard that the PD doesn't have a screen. Instead everything goes to the filter. I drive I-80 to Wendover 2 to 4 times per week across the Flats and have been in some "salt storms", but not really a "salt blizzard". Guess I need to look at that soon. I had heard some people say that you shouldn't open the air box all that often as you will end up with leaks, so I had been avoiding it.

If you put the air box back together correctly it's not an issue. Just make sure the rubber seal on the filter is seated correctly and you will be ok. If you want to swing by I'll check it for you.

Naw. That's OK. I can check it myself. I hadn't looked at how it is designed yet and thought maybe there was something about it that was different than most cars that caused it to leak easier once opened. I'll look it over this weekend. Thanks for the offer!

Better late than never, I guess. I should have got it done for you 2 months ago when I first said I'd do it.

Thanks for the kind words.
