Thanks!

That is not how this trailer started life. I upgraded the wheels and fenders and downgraded the springs for a softer ride (from 1000-lbs per side to 500-lbs). I'm on the verge of adding hub adapters that'll allow me to mount VW OEM wheels that match the car.

I have additional details in my photo album, starting at http://www.stealthtdi.com/Albums/NewStealthTrailer/carryon35x5lshstrailer.html.

I just spent the last hour looking threw your pictures and crap on your web site. Well done.

Just looked at stealth tdi's gallery. Laughed out loud, literally, at the the "undersize load" sign. I love it!

Hello,

A longer tongue will help a lot with backing up the trailer. Maybe make the tongue 24" longer and if you have a bolt on coupler you could always cut some off to a length that works for you after you use it.
Thanks for that. I suspect 12" would be plenty. I actually like the short total length. So I don't want to overdo it.

Thanks! I think the matching wheels will really make a difference! I'll be sure to share photos.

HAHA! Yeah, I'll have to find another chance to reshoot this one when I get the VW wheels mounted:

My uncle is a truck driver and really liked that shot. I wonder how many other drivers noticed us for the few miles that I followed that truck, hoping that he was going to stop in the rest area. :p

Longer is absolutely better in every regard except storage. If I were you, I'd take the coupler off the existing tongue and put a heavy duty hinge on it and basically double the tongue length when towing and fold it back when storing - best of both worlds.

I've got a smaller enclosed trailer which has a short tongue and it's a hassle to back like you mention - easy to jacknife.

I really don't NEED to change anything. But I'm interested in making a change for convenience sake. I'm contemplating replacing my trailer's tongue bar with one that is ~12 inches longer. This should make the trailer a little more stable while backing (less "pendulum"). Adding 18-24" would improve backing even more. But I don't think I need more than 12". I don't want to increase overall length too much. Adding 12" to the tongue will make the total length the same as my old 4x6, but with a longer wheelbase.

Can anyone think of any drawbacks to this idea other than cost? For the record, I'm considering a replacement bar, not a welded extension, to avoid any potential weak points along the tongue.

Thanks,

Scott
My kayak trailer (http://www.maloneautoracks.com/retractable-tongue-kit.php) has a sliding tongue for storage. You bolt it into place when needing to tow and unbolt it and slide it through to the back frame of the trailer for storage. That might be an option.

Thanks for the input, guys. Storage isn't a problem. I usually park mine in the back yard or sideways in the driveway in front of the car. Here's the only photo that sort of depicts everything in the driveway (Mk3 is in the back yard):

If storage isn't a problem, then don't bother with hinges or telescoping parts, etc as it's just more places to rattle, flex, rust, etc. I'd weld on an extension that doubles the length and enjoy.

I did this on my 2 place snowmobile trailer (extended the tongue by ~18") and it made a world of difference in how stable it was. I don't remember the measurements on that one off hand but it was close to 1:25 since the track width is so wide. and the tongue so short.

If you take the ball to axle length and divide it by the track width of the trailer tires, I like that ratio to be no less than 1.5:1 and preferably closer to 2:1.
On my little enclosed trailer mentioned above, it's measurements are 86/60 = 1.43
On my old 4x8 open tilt bed trailer it's measurements were ~96/55 ~=1.74
Guess which one is easier to back up :)

Backing ease (and relatedly, offtracking) should be entirely a function of the ratio between distance from tow vehicle rear axle to pivot point, and pivot point to center of the trailer axle(s). Track width of the trailer should not enter into the equation at all, unless there's something I'm missing regarding the triangles formed by each side of that equation but I can't think of any effect the width would have.

Hello,

I've considered the "rear triangle" part of the equation, too. I assumed the longer wheelbase of the Mk6 (104" vs. 97" for the Mk3) was a big factor. The Mk3 is certainly more maneuverable. I decided to measure the distance between the rear axle to the ball. Here's what I got:

Mk3 = 40" from axle to hitch pin + 9.75" ball mount = 49.75"

Mk6 = 37" from axle to hitch pin + 6.75" ball mount = 43.75"

I was really surprised that the overhang from the axle to the rear bumper is so much less on the larger car. I also recall moving to the shorter ball mount since I didn't need the ball to sit so far from the bumper on the Mk6.

So, not only is the longer wheelbase car less maneuverable, it would seem that the shorter distance from the axle to the ball is having less effect on the direction of the trailer when I am backing? I think I have that math about right.

Regardless, I'm not rushing out right away to get that longer tongue. But it's on a long list of "to do" things... sort of toward the bottom. For now, I value the overall shorter combined length. Given that my Mk6 is 10 inches longer than my Mk3, the overall length is about the same as what I had when I towed the old 4x6 with my Mk3.

I'm expecting the wheel adapters any time now. In the mean time, I've relocated my spare tire mount and mounted a smaller tongue jack that I like much better than what I had. I also rolled-on a few coats of bed liner this morning:

Hopefully, it dried well enough before the rain came six hours later (two hours to dry to touch, 24 hours before use).

Packed up a couple quads for this weekend and gave it a test run. Need another 2 feet of trailer really but they're not going anywhere. 1540#

Managed to carry 800 lbs this morning, my first time with the VW wheels. The fender gap looks much better with a load; I don't think anything rubbed on the dips/bumps:

Without a load for comparison:

I didn't take a full-car photo with the loaded trailer. I had unloaded some things before the sun came up. :( Maybe next time...

Looking good Scott!

I just changed the alloys on my trailer for a set with some nearly-worn-out Goodyear Eagle performance tires because the tread is over an inch wider than the set that was on there. They are still 15" Avus wheels. I have four sets (16 wheels) now!

Here is a closeup of the new (used) tires. The wider tread is great for travel over lawns behind my tractor:

For a change this weekend the tractor got a ride inside the trailer. We went out to my wife's grandfather's place to make sure their lawn got cut in one day. With the two of us (Grandpa and I) on separate 42" lawn tractors the grass got cut in no time, and I got to finally cross "lawn tractor mowing races" off my bucket list!

Good times!

Aluma 548

I used the Goodwill money from both of my TDIs to upgrade my trailer.
I'm using a fixed Bosal swan neck, and Euro 7 pin trailer wiring. My trailer module can't be re-coded, so I have a 3 to 2 wire adapter attached to the trailer. I works well, and the euro wiring lets the car know when a trailer is attached for trailer esp etc.
An Aluma 548 is 320 lbs. I've run airline track down both sides of the trailer, so I can have tie down points anywhere I want. I also use the track for a truck box mount. The torsion axle will accept brakes, but I haven't gotten there yet.

ZCI module

Well the install of the ZCI trailer light module went well, Ended up with the Right and Left sensors clipped around the directional wires as expected. But I had to connect the tail light sensor to the license plate lights and all is finally working as it should. It is a very nice unit, because you don't have to splice into the cars wiring harness. there are only current transformers that clip around the wires.
Now to find the Brake light signal from the brake sensor on the master cylinder so I can run the trailer brakes. I have installed a Tekonsha P3 proportional brake controller and this is the last step.
Does anyone know if or where I can pickup the brake signal from the brake sensor on the master cylinder inside the cabin of the car?
