LOL, well I was born and raised in England, maybe I could try that angle, :p
Who knows, it may work. IIRC, I read somewhere in these forums of a member who called PF Jones and was able to get reduced shipping. Another member supposedly was able to source a towbar from a company in Germany for less than from the UK. Of course there you have the language barrier.

I used Transportsysteme24.de and the google translate function.
Airfreight was $125. The exchange rate to Euros was more favorable than GBP.
I emailed back and forth in English and they were able to answer with no problems.

language barrier in communicating with them shouldn't be any problems. Not Europeans speak English. The only issues would be with the mounting instructions. I would be surprised if the had an English version.

Most installation instructions have multiple language texts and are profusely illustrated. My Bosal towbar instructions had: Dutch, German, English, French, Spanish, Danish, Norse, Swedish, Finnish, Italian, Czeck, and Polish text. However, I could have figured it out just from the illustrations.

Oil temp is the limiting factor, IME.
Coolant temp never moves off the middle.
Oil temp when climbing a long interstate grade will go from 210-220F to 260F in just a couple minutes. It will climb higher, but I chicken out and slow way down at that point to stop the temp increase.

Good point on oil temp...I don't have the gauge though. I do have a SG showing water temp :) .

I am a little concerned on the tongue weight. I am towing a KLR650 on a motorcycle trailer. I figure the bike with camping boxes weighs around 520. I have a few other things on the trailer also. I figure the whole thing weighs around 1000 lbs. The tongue weight is around 75 lbs. I could fill up the bikes fuel tank which is in front of the trailer axle.

75 lb tongue weight on 1000 lbs total load is right between the European and US recommendations. You should be fine.

I agree with this. I've seen oil temps as high as 255 but never seen water temp above 212-215(ultra gauge).
I've been wanting to go on a road trip and pull a camper with my Jetta. Before that trip I will definitely be upgrading oil coolers. Probably install a front mount too. The same trip I saw 255 degree oil, intake temps were just over 160.

My first time towing with this car. Pretty loaded down....two bikes and a 18 cubic foot roof box, KLR650, and the inside was packed. I also had two snow tire/wheels and the spare for the trailer inside the car.

I am glad I put in the DLC520s before the trip....the extra power was great! My average was 33mpg. The hills going from Indiana to 9800' in Colorado pretty much killed the average. I was holding 70-75 in 5th with no problem...and that is with the .658 gear. The EGT did get up to 1200 climbing a very long hill.

Those high oil temps are concerning at first glance, but it appears as though its not as bad as we thought. The Ram Ecodiesel also runs high oil temps. And synthetic oil breakdown temps are 350-400*F. As long as your running full synthetic, it sounds like the oil temps posted above aren't all that bad (although, a shorter OCI might be a good thing).

Highest oil temperature I've ever seen personally was around 250°F/122'°C. Not towing at that point in time but definitely had some sustained high speeds.

Thing is that isn't really THAT hot for oil, especially synthetic. It's not miles above boiling temp really, which we all know we're supposed to make sure we achieve regularly to get the water from condensation out of our oil!

Funny part was while filling up with fuel 10 minutes after dropping the car and dolly the girl behind the counter looks out the window at my hitch, giggles and says "do you actually tow with that thing?" so I pulled up the picture and said "yeah actually I do, and still get 30 mpg!"

I usually haul my dirt bike on a hitch carrier with my Excursion, but I'm having some fuel problems with it right now so plan B was put in to effect.

Trailer is an old boat trailer I put a deck on.

I like it! I have a 16' Scamp I am rebuilding that I have towed across the eastern part of the US.
Great tow car. I use the JSW.
Thanks for the picture.

What kind of EGT's are you guys seeing towing? What gear and rpm?

Saw 160 Intake temp.....I bet the other side of that equation was warm!

An EGT gauge is the only thing standing between me and a good tune! Because I'm afraid of what they get up to while towing and I don't know if they'll get better or worse with a tune. I run mine in 5th gear and run 'er hard when I'm towing.

Lol good point! FYI, I towed a lot with stock 15" wheels... Switched to 17" Longbeach wheels and it tows like a completely different car! It feels like a dually truck vs a single rear wheel truck, it is fantastic!

I see around 1100-1400 sometimes. I don't drive past 65 when towing and make sure I don't lug the engine or go WOT. This was when I purchased my 6x12 v nose enclosed. Towed about 200 miles. Trailer weighed about 1600lbs with the wood shelves the previous owner installed

EGT depends on the tune. If you do the EGR and dpf delete, your egt will be lower.

Annual picture of our 1983 Scamp camper & '01 Golf at Ohio fiberglass trailer GTG a few weeks ago.

That is soooo what I want. I need my setbacks to end so I can achieve this goal. How do you like the Scamp? The more details the better.
