Should I get one of these?

I'm looking to possibly get into one of these soon. There are quite a few available in my area and they're pretty inexpensive; 2013/14 SE & SEL, less than 45k miles, between $10k & $14k. That seem like a pretty low price to me. Is it because of the whole dieselgate thing or is this just what VWs of that era are worth? When I go to look at them is there anything I should look out for or ask about? Any inherent problems with these that would make me want to run away? I make monthly ~1000mile trips, is this a car that I would be confident in or would I always be worrying about it breaking down? Basically, should I get one or should I stay away?

A little history on me, about a decade ago I got a TDI Sportwagen and I absolutely loved that car, one of my favorites, but I had to get rid of it too soon (not dieselgate related) so I don't know what they're like later in life.

TIA for any helpful information y'all can give.

I bought mine 2013 TDI SE w sunroof and navigation at 17.000 miles CPO for almost 14k. Of course after financing ,dealer fees, taxes and some dealer add ons, went up but the base price for the car was reasonable as sticker price in 2013 was 33k.

In my opinion as long as you get CPO car should be fine. During 2 years of CPO warranty they would fix your issues with car and then you have 120k miles extended emissions warranty which also covers turbocharger.

I wouldn’t hesitate to get one of the newer cars. My 2015 purchased in November 2017 has been very good from 26K miles to 67K miles now.

Love my ‘14 passat tdi sel premium, i am at 33,600 miles in 2+ years. Mine did have the water pump fail under powertrain warranty and cover the timing and serpentine belts in coolant (it only leaked when the car was running). Also a minor oil leak at the valve cover, all was resolved by 59,000 miles. I’ve had 24,000 trouble-free miles. So there may be some initial issues due to the car sitting for so long, but after that it’s pretty smooth sailing.

See if you can snag a '15 over a '12 DSG gearing is soo much better on the '15 for long highway runs.

1000 miles at a time is money for a TDI.

Love my 2015 Passat TDI with DSG. I do 120 miles a day and easily get 40mpg going 80mph with traffic, some city traffic in afternoons, and about 30 minutes of idling. I usually have about 80-120 miles left after doing about 650 miles through the week. When I go to refill on Sunday night I still usually have 80-120 miles left on the trip meter.

Buy a 2015 CPO, get your heater core and EGR cooler replaced before it’s up and you’ll be good to go. They actually changed my dpf at 86k miles when they did those other two parts and the car is working awesome. I’ve had some issues with the car, but I still love it. I’ll be at 100k miles very soon.

2015 cars have more time and mileage on the warranty. 2015 are 11/162K, 2012-2014 are 10 year 3 month/123K.
