Hey guys, I've found a new Jetta I can buy out the door for about 16 grand. Of course its just a stripped down model six speed TDI with manual windows and locks. I've got a 2003 Golf TDI 2 door 5 speed right now. I'll probably wind up selling it to pay for the new car if I buy it. What kind of mileage are you guys getting with the new Jetta? I've heard its close to 50??? I hate to pass up a new car with 0 miles and the full warranty for this little of money. What kind of warranty does VW give these days? What should I do? I commute all the time for work and my 2003 is just getting some age on her. Thanks guys. :D

First question: Since this new jetta is a "stripped down model with manual windows", it is probably not a TDI. Gasser Jettas do not get anywhere near the mileage that TDIs do. I'm no expert, but I would guess that you won't get much over 30mpg. If it is a TDI for that price, is it really new? Generally TDIs come with all the bells and whistles of the SEL model which includes power windows.

As to whether or not you should buy it, we really can't make up your mind for you. VWs have some really good points and some really bad points (like their dealer service network). New TDIs also have some really good points (their torque and drivablility) and again some really bad points (like the possibility of expensive repairs). You must decide yourself what risks you are willing to take on.

Have Fun!

This is like asking a bank if they have money.

All our answers in this specific area of the forum of course will answer yes and give our reasons. Ultimently the choice is yours.

Also I second what the person above me wrote, you are not buying a 11' TDI for anything under 22k.

So I would say stick around and do some research here, Google helps too.

Age? The thing is 8 years old. 9 to 9.5 years old is the average age of the passenger vehicle fleet (257.4 M (08 gov registration data) What do you have 500,000 miles? Anything less than that; can you say "LIGHTWEIGHT"?

Truly if you can get a new Jetta TDI for less than 16,000, I would be tempted. If the right stuff is de contented I would give a serious look. The only real question is how close to dealers cost (below is better) is it? I would assume it is also a 6 speed manual?

But then on the other hand, you have one of the BEST Mk IV TDI's 03 Golf 2 door with MANUAL transmission AND at less decontention !!! For sure under the same conditions, you will not come NEAR the mileage you can now get with your Golf. (see signature for an apples to oranges comparison 48-52 vs 40-47 mpg ) Can you get 50 mpg? Yes, and absolutely. But do you really want to drive your TDI like a Prius? Driving it in this way longer term, as you probably well know is not good for a TDI.

Your TDI is in demand both in the TDI community and at large. If in good condition you can probably get top dollar.

I've been around the TDI"s for a few years and have loved my Golf. One of the local dealerships are offereing a stripped down TDI Jetta for 14999. My friend told me about it. I called them and one of the sales man said sure its a diesel. I then called back to make sure and its a 2.0. I was ready to buy it had it been a TDI. Sorry guys...I'll just hold on to my 03 Golf TDI for a few more years.
