Contact your dealer and arrange a test drive as soon as one comes in. I'm sure you will like the increased space - I'm looking foreword also as a possible replacement for my 04 Jetta or my ford escape as the main family hauler.

On a side note - was also looking at the Nissan altima - 6spd manual 2.5l - wife likes the look of it - probably cheaper than the passat - and if no TB change, fuel filter, ad blue - the fuel savings of approx $250/year may be a wash.

Did you try the Altima? My wife's step-mother has one. We drove it earlier this year, and neither of us were impressed. My wife likes to whine about the cost of keeping her Passat on the road (well, no car with 220,000 km on the clock is cheap to maintain but it's paid for), but complained like crazy about how tinny and buzzy the Altima felt in comparison, and I had to agree. Mind you it was the previous generation, perhaps it's improved since.

No - haven't driven the latest generation yet (though looks pretty good on paper with size, 2.5l 4cycl, 6spd manual, price, ect)

Did the one you drove have the cvt transmission? I've driven other Nissan products with it - and no thank you. I'll only take a manual transmission.

I don't recall if it was CVT, but it wasn't manual. I agree 100% on your comments on CVT. Had a rental Sentra with it once, hated it.

I'm driving Nissan Versa rental now after my beloved Passat got totalled and the AT really sucks. I drove the DSG 2012 Passat TDI saturday and was really impressed. I may even consider it over a 6 speed now and hopefully it will outlive me because it would cost a fortune to repair/replace a tranny inside a tranny!

I stopped by the dealership this weekend and sat in it, but didn't test drive it yet. I too am growing the family and looking for something to fit 3 carseats in the rear...

The Passat was HUGE. I'm 6'1" and had >6" sitting behind myself (I adjusted the driver's seat to maximum comfort). It was also very wide.

We are looking for a super efficient family car which puts us in with TDIs and the larger hybrids (Fusion, Camry, etc). The 11 Jetta seemed like it might work, but after sitting in the Passat, I think my wife was sold on getting a mid-size. Afterwards we went over to the Ford dealership and got in the Fusion. My wife and I agreed that it felt more in the class of the Jetta than the Passat. It was slightly wider than the Jetta, but nowhere near the Passat.

I know there has been a lot of complaining about the "downgrading" VW did to the Passat, but from my perspective (and maybe yours, too), I need an affordable, larger vehicle that gets good mileage. Compared to the other options in that category (Camry and Fusion Hybrids) on aesthetics, etc the Passat is IMO the clear winner.

Now to actually test drive them...

P.S. It is possible to get 3 carseats in the back of an '05 Golf, but man-o-man is it tight!
