Seat occupancy pins/wires

Hey all,

I'm trying to get my barn find 2006 new beetle TDI PD on the road. I'm currently facing one major code that will prevent me passing inspection to get it roadworthy.
Its:

02511 Active/Static

Seat occupied recognition control module
-J706--Faulty

I need to check all the pins on the connector that runs to the module, does anyone have a wiring schematic or reference for this?

I also have this:

00778 Active/static
Steering angle sensor-no or incorrect basic setting/adaptation

But I haven't had the chance to try the lock to lock reset that might clear this

Right now any info on the wiring for the seat occupied sensor would be appreciated.

Thank you!!

The latter issue should go away once you start driving it and the module "learns" the endpoints of the SW rotation.

As for the J706 error, "module faulty" sounds like the detection module itself might be bad; can't remember on those where it is - maybe just bolted to the bottom of the seat (and thus, relatively easy swap).

You can also check the Ross-Tech (VCDS) suggestions to see if any of those might be applicable.

Thanks, I figured the wheel rotation issue was relatively minor.

The module is bolted underneath the passenger seat, when I unplug it then power the car up I get more error messages. When I plug it back in then clear the errors the only one left is "faulty" so the module is somewhat responding.

I did a lot of digging online and found a number of reasons that could be the cause, one of the main ones is it seems to share wiring with the heated windscreen washer jets, the wiring at the interface to the hood flexes too much and the wires get damaged. So I'll be investigating that, its why I'm looking for a wiring diagram for the module itself so I can trace and check all the wires.

I managed to crawl under the seat and get a photo of my module

OMG....but you've already disconnected one component of that system!!!! 😱

Seriously, though - wiring is a likely culprit. The seat modules seem to be fairly robust - very few reports of them going bad that I've come across here. Maybe if they get wet (flood-damaged car, or sunroof drain spilled over into the footwells), but that's probably the only common cause.

Small update on this; I was at a pickNpull place yesterday and decided to pick up a spare seat occupancy module just in case mine is fried (yes I know it will need programming).

I repaired some damaged wiring which I thought might be the cause of my airbag light. After reconnecting the battery and checking I wasn't able to clear the code at all.

So I disconnected the battery and tried plugging in the replacement module I bought from the junk car (I made sure to get the same hardware version on the box as my car).

I expected that the replacement module would throw some different errors as it hasn't been programmed for my car. However it didn't, it threw the same code as before. J706 - Faulty

So this makes me wonder if someone has already swapped this module out, the history on the car is flaky so its entirely possible.

I think next I'm going to check out the wiring under the passenger seat, there seems to have been a recall on damaged wiring or a patch on VW 2000+ as at the junk yard I found a number of cars had a wiring harness extension/patch on them and I think I found something online about it. So maybe mine needs the repair.

If that doesn't work I'm going to try and get my hands on a VCDS or VAG COM and get more info on the error, perhaps try and re-program my module.

Does anyone have any advice on doing this?

Ok so to add closure to this thread. I found a mobile mechanic who had a VCDS and he was able to drop by today.
He did a "basic setting" on the module and the airbag light is off

I just have to get my steering angle sensor calibrated and I should be good to go.

Thanks!
