None any more. My heart couldn't take it.
1. MacIntosh computers separate the data fork and resource fork, thus you have those duplicate files starting with "._".

2. iTuneMy Walkman is a program that can be used to convert iTunes format to MP3 or AAC. It is shareware, but if you use it, throw them a few bucks, it's just the right thing to do. Make sure you define all [.mp4 .m4a .m4b .m4p and .mp3] formats for copying (and conversion) in the preferences.

I use a Mac. Is there any way to get rid of the period and underscore?

^^I asked that question on another post. I got the following response for how to get rid of the ghost files on the SD card on a Mac. I did not actually do it yet, but I bet it works. To find the "Terminal", I found it by just searching the term in the finder on my iMac.

I have the RNS510, so I use the SD card to put the songs on my hard drive. Once on the hard drive, I simply deleted the ghost files one by one. It was a pain and took a while, so next time it will be great to try the commands in the terminal.

How to get rid of ghost files on the Mac
You can use "dot_clean" from the Terminal to clear those out before you eject the card.

So you open Terminal > Then Type "dot_clean /Path/To/SDCard" in my case its "dot_clean /Volumes/SDMusic"

terminal will allow you to see the files but "spotlight" and other nanny things will keep the files poping back up on the SD card, I couldn't even manaually delete the files with comand lines.

The only thing I've found was "Blue Harvets" wich is for the intel macs and did the job with a simple right click.

I'll have to try iTuneMy Walkman to convert my M4A files

^^I just tried it and it worked! The only hitch was the name for the SD card couldn't have any spaces or I got an error. I used an underscore to link the name of the SD Card and it worked great. I tried adding a song, then cleaned with the terminal, then added a second song and tried the card in the car. The first song didn't have a ghost copy.

dot_clean /Volumes/VW_TDI

Above is what I typed in my terminal. The space after dot_clean was required.

Not technical on the issue but I've been using a 8gb sdhc NOT for music but for audio books. My iPod is hooked up with music but the card is great for audio books. 8gb for audio books is waaaaaay overkill, a 2gb would be more than adequate. I could probably put a bunch of books on my 8gb but once you get started you stick with the book. Harry Dresden books are darn good. Try an audio book, you might like it. Cheers

I bought a VW MID cable from eBay for $20-$25, I recall, but it would NOT work with my 3rd Gen iPod (circa 1993-1994). Don't confuse 3rd gen with other models, this is an early one. After that time the changed the serial port standard slightly, which apparently causes it to not work with every dock...

I bought a used 32Gb 3rd Gen iPod Touch from eBay.... loaded it with all my songs... about 30Gb worth, and it works like a charm, LOVE IT. I leave it in the car. The only complaint is getting to the folders. It is a little slow at first. Once it displays the folders you can navigate, select and play pretty fast. One time it hung up, stopped working over a 5 week period. I just had to unplug the iPod and plug it in again. Works like a charm.

It sounds like the SD card works well.

I am still on my 3 mo demo period for Sat Radio. It is OK. I am sure if I listened to it more I would like it. However I have a data phone (Evo 4G Sprint) and can stream Pandora or Hulu (listen to talk shows commuting) which connects via blue tooth. Between the iPod and the blue tooth data phone (not to mention the radio and CD player) I have more than enough media. So I will not renew the Sat Radio....

Ok, with all of the talk here about SD cards, I got out an old 1GB SD card and loaded it up. Worked pretty well and stored 200 songs! Then I decided that about half the songs were crap. ;-) Sound quality is good or bad depending upon the compression used on the files. With a better (less) compression, I would have fewer songs available. The "cost" of SD seems to me the time to sort through and pick a limited number of songs out. Still beats the CD changer for having a big selection available.

I agree, it's hard to beat Pandora. There is also internet radio, which has a huge variety. The satellite radio is more convenient to tune in, but between the poor audio quality and the extra expense, it's hard for me to justify.

I compartmentalize things the same way you do. I use the hard drive for my CDs, if I take the time to copy them. I used the iPod for songs I've downloaded from the iTunes Store and I use the SD card for odd items like audio books or educational podcasts for work or whatever. It is great having things loaded in different places. When my son is along for the ride, I have him use the bluetooth to play his music from his iPhone.

I do like the Sirius radio, but would be willing to give it up for Pandora. I just don't want to pay or the data plan with the fancy phones and now it seems they all have limits anyway. Sirius is less expensive than a data plan! I also wonder if I'd run past the limit if I used Pandora for my daily commute. I guess I'll give in one of these days, so I'll find out how much data I use. Now I just have an iPod Touch that I use around the house with WiFi. I really do like Pandora!

OP was 2.5 years ago... :)

Yeah, at the time of the original post I think 16GB SDHC cards were available but were just coming out and $$$. I thought $25 was pretty good for 8GB. I recently bought a 32GB mini-SD card for ~$30 for my phone. :)

The sound via SD is MUCH better than Sirius radio. I wonder if they're compression the audio stream to 64k or something. It's terrible.
Don't quote me on that but I think it was a requirement from RIAA that the bitrate would be so low as to discourage copying and prevent commercial pirating of songs. I will never pay one penny for such crappy sound: This is the 21st century - for goodness sake - and laser has been around for over 30 years now.

We use the SD port on the car alot, but lately it keeps messing up. I'm assuming it is our SD card (8gb Wintec). When certain songs start to play it gets an error. ;(

I am using Windows Media Player. You put in a CD. It rips each song to .mp3 format and stores it on your hard drive. You then use "Sync" to specifiy which items are to be copied to which device...such as your card. My grandson taught me how to do it last weekend. Very easy. You have a backup copy on your computer and it puts them on the card.
Is it really THAT easy? I'm gonna get right on it with a tower of CDs that I have. Will Windows Media Player automatically catalog files by artist, album and track, meowman? I hope so...

Assuming your computer is hooked up to the internet when you put a CD in, WMP will find information about the CD and automatically import it when you "rip" the songs. By default, it will save all of the files in "artist/album/song" directories, which makes it very easy to copy them to your SD card or an external hard drive you could hookup up to your MDI.

Also, you have the option to rip your music to .mp3 or WMA (Windows Media Audio) file types, among a few others (look in the options in the Rip settings). While .mp3 is the most universally compatible, it is an older technology. A WMA file can be compressed roughly twice as much and retain the same audio quality as an mp3 file -- this means that you'll use about 1/2 the space on your SD card for the same quality of sound. So in addition to selecting which type of file to use, you'll need to select the compression rate. The more compression, the smaller the file but more compromised sound.

I ripped all of my music to 192Kbps WMA files and that's roughly the equivalent of a 384Kbps mp3 file. WMAs can't be played on an iPod but are usually viable on just about all other audio players. It may not be right for you, but before you take the time to rip all of your CDs, do a little bit of research so you don't end up ripping everything a second time. It may take just a little bit to figure out all the settings at first but once you do, it is very easy to rip all of your CDs.

FYI, as far as I can tell, the radio will only play SD songs in alphabetical order within a folder (i.e. not by track #); I haven't found any way to control its behavior.

So, if you prefer to listen to albums in song order, be sure to preface your ripped file names with track numbers, e.g.

01 - Speak To Me.mp3
02 - Breathe.mp3
03 - On The Run.mp3

etc...

Out of curiosity, what app did you used to rip your music? WMP appears to do this automatically, or at least I didn't set anything and all of my files show up on the RCD-510 with the track # preceding the title. When viewing the files via WMP, the track # is in its own column, though, so I'm assuming the info is recorded in the meta tags and the RCD-510 is reading from that. I'm not sure if that provides any info to you that may help you reorganize your files, but...

I use Media Monkey. It has options to define the file name format however I'd like - include album, artist, etc (not sure what the default naming scheme is).

In any case, track # is (or, I should say, can be) stored in the MP3 metadata, and is in my case, but appears to be ignored by the radio.

Not a huge deal, I manually renamed the files & prepended track #. IIRC Media Monkey includes a utility to automatically rename files, which I tried to use, but it didn't do exactly what I wanted, though I forget the details now.

I thought SDHC was considered:

8GB
16GB
32GB

So if he has an 8GB..that would mean yes.
I have problems using more then a 4GB card. Was using a 16gb card made by hama and the radio would turn on and off by it's self as long as the card was plugged in. My Co-workers were telling me that I had Christene the killer Car, because the radio would go crazy when I left the SD card in. swaped for a 4gb card an I haven't had any ploblems since. I also read in the users manual you're suppose to use a 2gb card. Anybody else have problems, or do think I was just using a crappy SD card?

I thought the limit was a 16 gig card.

Thanks for the useful info. May seem second nature for many posters here, but this one is happy to learn something new. Another reason to love my JSW!

You shouldn't have a problem with the size of them. If they start making 128G cards, they should work too.

I have a 16G micro SD card in the slot (with an adapter of course) that works perfectly. Songs are in the folders I put them into from my computer. Everything is in track order.

Honestly? I don't even know why they put in the ipod connectivity thing. The fact is, if you have music on your iphone it will read it via bluetooth anyway.

I should have read this before buying my card as well. 32G card for $35. I have about 90 - 100 CD's burned to it now, and built 3 folders so far Vocal/Instrumental/Others. Upon startup I find the 3 folders and choose the music type I want and open that one. My vocals has about 80 cd's on it and is easy to navigate.
My issue is, I'm only at about 15% or so of the SD card memory...whatta waste! Between am/fm/sat/sd I have more options than time. Ripping a CD takes about 4 minutes, so I guess I'll get the rest of my library on it.
