ScanGauge II issues

I run a ScanGauge II in my '03 Jetta wagon. I have it set for water temperature, ATF temperature, boost and volts. The water temperature and ATF temperature are both "X-gauges". I have triple checked the values input to the values in the documentation and it seems that almost 100% of the time the AFT and water temperature track each other (one is always 1 degree higher than the other).

Are the "X-gauge" values in the ScanGauge II documentation correct?

Is it possible to use both water temperature and ATF in the same ScanGauge II?

What might be causing this?

Why do you have to x-gauge the coolant temp? Don't have to with the SG in either the '01/'03. Although I have the manual trans (thank goodness). Recall there was issue of SG displaying tranny temp instead of coolant temp in the autos, buy shouldn't have to x-gauge both fields.

The SG2 website gives an X-gauge for coolant temp, tried it and it works... however it gives the same temps as the gauge already in the SG when new... So I don't know why they added this gauge... (mine is std trans.)
What temperature does the scangauge give you? You could know if it's wrong by bringing your engine to operating temperatures without using the transmission which should stay relatively cool when stationnary...

Maybe, although usually the tranny "cooler" goes through the radiator so the coolant temp in radiator (if coolant reaches warm enough to open stat and circulate through the radiator) will/could influence the tranny temp.
Do the two temps follow each other that closely if you don't use the x-gauge coolant temp and just use the non x-gauge coolant temp data??

Transmission temperature should indeed follow coolant temperature very closely due to the heat exchanger between the two systems (coolant and transmission fluid).

The same should hold true for oil temperature, although that range is typically a bit wider than what you're seeing.

From what I've heard is when the ATF temperature sensor goes bad the ECU uses the ECT sensor value to determine set shift points which will be harsher than normal so the ATF and ECT should be tracking very close to the same temperature during normal operation.

I'll try and see if I can use the "stock" ScanGauge water temperature and the "X-Gauge" ATF temperature.

I cannot imagine that it is currently reading correctly with both "X-gauge"'s. They simply track way to close to be believable. 1 degree difference constantly from the moment the car is started!?!?

The tranny shifts very smoothly and is working great right now so if a faulty temp sensor causes hard shifts then we can probably rule that one out..

This has officially become a solution in search of a problem. ;)

It'll be interesting to see if your stock ECT value is any different.

I added an x-gauge for coolant temperature also. The existing gauge only showed ATF temperature which is no where near the coolant readings. Only on a hot day will the two ever come close, but the coolant temperatures rise a lot faster than the AFT temp. This added X-gauge has a tendency to stay in the sleep mode, meaning that after a short shut-off the temperature reading does not come down unless I unplug and replug the SCII. I had Linear Logic do a reprogramming, but the problem is still there.

I tried the suggestions and there is no difference.

Is anyone out there running a ScanGauge II that is successfully displaying both water temperature and ATF temperature, preferably on an '03 Jetta auto?

If so, can you post up the "X" gauge values you have used to make this happen?

Delete the ATF X-gauge. The existing coolant gauge from the factory should actually show the ATF temperature. That is what mine does. I had tried a separate ATF x-gauge, but it would always default to 140.

old thread i know

just bought a scan gauge 2 used from another member here, and the built in coolant gauge in the SG appears to be showing the transmission temp. i used the code (found on the forum somewhere) for the coolant, and it appears to work, but its in *F and my car and the rest of the temps are *C being I'm in Canada. does anyone know of the coding for an X-Gauge to show the coolant temp in *C on a BEW?

I still have the Scangauge One and the units are chosen in the menu... no coding required

unless your car is an auto. then the "factory coolant gauge" on the SC shows transmission temp ( in the selected units from the menu) and flashes the coolant temp only once and awhile.....i did some digging around and found a code that seem to work for the X-Gauge "WTR" from the Linear Logic site, but its reading 40* high based on the flashes from the factory SC coolant temp. Anyone know what characters to modify in the MTH to fix this?

I also have a BEW engine with a manually shifted gearbox and the only gauge I had to code-in was boost pressure for the KP-39 turbo... coolant temp is read from the ECU which is the temperature of the coolant from the cylinder head.
Have you tried restoring your Scangauge II to factory defaults and starting over?

Mines an auto, and i had read in a number of posts (can't f***in' find 'em now ) that this was common with the autos

yes, i did the "reset"....still shows engine coolant and transmission temp. trans temp most of the time, with flahes of coolant temp.....i just need to know how to drop the reported value by 40......kids are in bed and wife (recovering from surgery) is napping on the couch....time for more digging :)
