It is interesting to see what TDI owners are thinking about as it relates to the emissions nightmare and future ownership of their diesel VW.

Scandal comment . . . for what it's worth (maybe not much)

Although i voted that i'll wait for the recall, get it fixed & decide later, in all likelihood the only reason i'd consider getting rid of my 2010 TDI (i also have a '98 w/ 277 K miles on it) would be if the fix denigrates performance or fuel economy substantially. VW is no different than GM (ignition switch defect that actually killed some people) or Ford (the Pinto gas tank horror story) in that they are all driven by the sick corporate ethos of the late 20th & early 21st century that they must continually distribute (& ideally increase) dividends to stockholders and/or increase bottom line profits & net worth at all costs. The public collective memory seems to me to be about 30 seconds these days-- fed by the same poor collective memory of most of the mainstream media--so although no one is being killed (at least directly) by VW's deceipt (though i heard recently that someone is claiming 2 people died as a result of this--that seems preposterous to me) it's the only thing in the discussion. As for the environmental impact, nitrogen oxide is a far less damaging pollutant than carbon tailpipe emissions from gassers, including hybrids when running on their gasoline engines. Seems to me that second generation (ligno-cellulosic) biofuel which matches petroleum based fuel efficiency but burns with far less noxious emissions would be a good transition to cleaner cars.
i am still happy to drive my TDI. . .

I was asked today (1st time, really) what I thought about the emissions from my car, and my reply was, "I don't know and I don't care." That brought a smile to the face of the man that asked. I then added that I really want a smoke switch for the jerks who love to ride my bumper at night in their SUV or truck knowing they are blinding me. I said I'd really like to blow a huge soot cloud at those drivers, and they really liked that.

Cheers!

Good article, thanks for the url, ugenetoo. I love it when people point out the absolute and utter stupidity displayed by agencies of the gub'mint. Hence the #3 biggest lie: "We're from the government and we want to help you."

lol. A lady in my office was giving me crap last week. I told her to keep it up and I'll get it tuned so that it rolls coal like an old big rig.

The torch and pitchfork crowd is alive and well over on the emissions thread (Don's link in post #2). Seems that we gained many new forum member's whose sole ambition is to rant on that thread. Counterproductive in my opinion.

I am much more concerned about the survival of the company so I can find parts when I need them.

So my answer to the poll is that I DO actually care, won't get the fix, and will drive it as long as I can.

I also agree with Dyvyd on the NOx versus carbon dioxide question. I have no problem with NHTSA ratcheting up the average fleet mpg requirements, but meeting the EPA's newer limit simultaneously is at odds with that goal.

Access to smaller TDI engines would also help reduce ALL emissions. I'd be happy with a 1.4L TDI, or even a 1.2L 3 cylinder version. Bluemotion, and regenerative braking, too. If you burn less fuel, you produce less emissions, even with higher ppm in that volume of gases emitted. It is a fact that applies to the big i6 and V8 diesels-more emitted gas volume at lower ppm NOx = less emitted gas volume at higher NOx, roughly speaking. Maybe 40x is much more, but you get the point. 40mpg is a lot more than 15mpg.

And what is lost on all of this controversy are other important facts. For instance, extraction of oil from tar-sands involves burning fuel just to extract it. I wonder how those processing emissions (and the CONTENT of those emissions) compare to TDI tailpipe emissions. Using less oil (gasoline, diesel, etc) seems much more important to me in the long run.

Need a fourth option- nothing but drive it unless Big Brother forces me to get it "fixed". Then I'll un-fix it with a tune.

I'm with KAT90- Drive More, Govern Less

I have many other things about my TDI that I am concerned about that will take priority over some smog that the car produces. I will continue to drive it until it dies or until they tell me I can't register it anymore.
