Eric and I are going to pull our first NB engine tomorrow. Somehow, I think it's going to be like Herm's description of doing B4V rear struts.

Think kind thoughts. Looks like we need all the Karma we can get.

Never pulled an engine out of a NB. But I don't find them that hard to work on once a few things are out of the way. I would probably yank the fenders and front bumper off, they come off as one piece, not that hard to do but its a lot of bolts.

Good luck, I'm sure you guys are more than capable of figuring it out.

Yes, kind thoughts. You should post a few pics of the damage I did to the old engine. I knew $5k for the car was too good of a deal, but I'm glad you and Eric are here.

There are just too many to list....
Herm thinks everything is tough. ;)

NB is cake. The whole front end comes off, similar to any other A4 car. Only difference is you take the fenders off with it.

Remove the headlights (that right there is the hardest part), remove the front wheels and fender liners, and you will see all the attachment bits under there, back by the lower part of the A-pillar area near the door hinges, etc. Take your time, very easy though. Then all the Torx screws across the top, then the whole nose and fenders comes off in one neat chunk (helps with two people because it is somewhat awkward and flimsy once removed).

Then the lock carrier setup is essentially the exact same as the A4 Golf/Jetta, just shaped a little different and of course the headlights will already be gone.

You can then remove the whole lock carrier with inner bumper, condenser, radiator, fans, etc. all in one nice neat piece.... and then the entire engine/trans is right there right out in the open. Super, SUPER easy. I LOVE these cars. :D

You can just unbolt the drive axle inner flanges from the trans, and leave them in the car, and with the crane roll the whole engine/trans straight out from the engine bay. You can set the wheels back on and set the car back down on ramps if you like. Usually jack stands at the unibody rails are OK though if you do not have a lift.

Not much different than a Jetta:

And Bruce, if you hit a snag please feel free to call me at the shop. I can talk you through anything if needed.

I will. The pics are stuck in the camera's internal memory, and one of my kids "borrowed" the Kodak proprietary cable you need to get them out. New cable should be here in a day or two.

Brian, thanks.

__. No, not sadistic ... they just design a lot of key items on the Monday after Oktoberfest.

The beetle I did we just dropped it out the bottom. Had the car on stands high enough to slide the motor in and out under the core support without removing any of that stuff. I think there is a picture of me in the engine bay floating around here.

Bruce,
If you need any long distance help, give me a call.

I was in the US Navy Submarine Service, and I know lots of very bad words.

So your on your own as far as technical issues go, but plumbing words I can help out with.

Engine is in. Bolting up stuff now.

Hint on the NB. Take off the hood. With the head unbolted and being careful, the engine/tranny will come out.

Putting the engine/tranny in is really simple if you leave off the turbo, intake, aluminum accessory bracket, metal coolant pipe that goes to the front of the block, and the oil filter mount. You have all the room in the world with these missing. Easy to bolt up with the engine in the car.

Before you comment, one of the friggin headlights wouldn't come out. Therefore, taking off the front end was not an option.

Heh... them lights... another VW piece of work...

I guess I'm spoiled, but having the lift does make a difference. I took the front end off a NB once... I think it's about 1 1/2 lbs of nuts, screws and bolts, so depending on your point of view, not bad.

I'd rather drop it out the bottom.

Once someone breaks the headlight mounting rings it is impossible to get it back together/take it apart.

What was the cause of the engine failure?
