I thought some of you would be interested in how much a TB change costs in my area for an 06 jetta PD. Belt, tensioners, water pump
Evansville Performance Imports $1100, Dpatrick (dealership) $1200.
Indianapolis Jeff's VW is at $850 m-f, Autoban $950 m-f
Nashville German Performance $860 m-f, VW Hallmark $850 m-s
I'm headed down to Nashville Friday Sept 4 to drop off my car at night so they can change it and I can pick it up Saturday the 5th. It's a three hour drive for me but I needed to get it done on a Saturday. Evansville is thirty minutes from me, Indy is two hours, St. Louis is three. I didn't even call St. Louis. I used to live in Nashville and I'll go down with the family and do a honky tonk tour of town.
I posted this FYI because I used to read about $600 tb changes. Maybe some areas have better deals than mine. I wasn't about to pay more than a grand for a non trusted mechanic in my area. I had a EGR valve replaced at the stealership in Evansville and it cost me $700. Part 350 labor 350
Side note. The fella at Autoban in Indy seemed real knowledgable (over the phone) (I think he's from England) When I called about the EGR problem he said that he had a couple come in with a similar problem and it was clogged intercoolers (what all of the older tdi's had problems with) He would bake them out it it'd come right out then change the EGR valve. He said it was from running cheap diesel and idling alot (city driving). He also said it was covered by VW under their warranty as a recall. That in the ones he repaired VW paid for all of it including some extra compensation in one case. That apparently wasn't my car's problem cause the dealership scanned it (just like i had done at Autozone) and changed out the EGR valve It's been running great after that.
FYI I thought it'd be of interest.

TB change in KY?

No, with it needing to get done on a saturday and spending the night in a hotel I wanted to incorporate some type of activity. Versailes KY don't know any interesting activities over there. Like a said, driving three hours, bringing the family, including a 10 month old baby. Got to make it a dual purpose trip. If I was single I would have done it myself and drove to see Jeff in PA already.

You could tell me he'd do it for a lot less and in one day on a Saturday and that'd prolly make me re-schedule. The location lost it on that one.

What's of interest is that you don't seem to mention (or care) about the rest of the parts that should be included in the TB change out. You know, like the rollers, stretch bolts, etc. If price is you objective then if (when) it fails you can look for a cheap place to get a new cylinder head or replacement engine.

and with the number of recent waterpump failures I have seen, Waterpump is very strongly suggested.

I changed my own with a timing belt kit from Bleached Boraparts, cost me $350 for the timing belt parts, and about 5 hours of my labor. ( I borrowed the timing belt tools from my uncle)

Lots of things to do here. I'm a hop and skip from Lexington, KY.

If you wish, I can do it on a Saturday. Takes 5 hours or less.

I'll PM you the price. You'll be pleased with the substantial savings.

Greg Landuyt has started going limited TDI work (again), he's on the east side of Indy.

clarification

I apologize. I should have known better than to leave out all of the details. I read enough of these forums and realize there are many waiting to jump at the chance to scold the person would be giving less than the TLC these cars deserve.

It will receive a complete TB kit. with all of the parts that should be changed. It will be done by a trusted mechanic. That's why we trust them. It's because they do quality work. I'll post the entire list of parts changed after it's done. But it appears that you fellas have listed most of them.

My intentions were to place emphasis on the price differences and the sad reality that I unfortunately don't have a great mechanic closer to home. If I have car trouble (like the EGR valve) or a lost key (that one cost a bunch too) my options are limited. So I haven't checked my pm's yet. Maybe $850-$950 is the going price for a PD tb change

Will be going to Paramedick. Glad I posted. I'll give a follow up after it's all done. Never been to Lexington. Two birds with one stone. Thanks for all the interest on taking care of my TDI. Now TDI'ers in the area will know their options.
