RPM while cranking?

Should you be able to see rpm while cranking with a Vag Com? I have a no start condition with no codes related to the crank position sensor or anything else critical. (egr, glow plug light) Actually even with the sensor unplugged I get no codes either. While cranking the measuring blocks read zero and I'm thinking this might be my problem.

Now it fires up and dies. I get a code for the crank position sensor G28. I have a new cps on the way now.
Still not sure on the rpm question. I guess I'll find out when the new sensor comes in.

If the ECU doesn't get a signal from G28, it uses G80 (needle lift sensor on injector #3) as a substitute engine speed signal.

If both signals fail, the ECU shuts off the engine - which sounds like your symptoms, but I would expect a code for G80 as well.
