reverse gear hesitates 5-10 seconds then clunks into gear

2005 passat tdi, gmr auto trans-216,532 miles. torque converter replaced at 135,000. filter and fluid changed at 60 k intervals. all forward gears are fine. when going from park to reverse with foot on brake loud clunk and car vibrates, without foot on brake lesser clunk with engagement and no vibration, with car rolling backwards, then engagement is comparatively smooth with no vibration and slight sound. once in reverse operates normally. scan with vcds shows no codes. thanks in advance for any ideas.

You have a pressure loss in the reverse circuit. You could look at a flow diagram but that really won't help you, too many possibilities. I'm afraid that you are looking at an overhaul.

basic rebuild 2k, upgrade rebuild 3k, rebuild complete 5k installed. auto to manual from Frans 2.5k, installed 4k, some margin of error

the zf master overhaul kit is almost 1000, plus any hard parts. you will find that the best deal would be to send it to eriksson enterprises old saybrook conn. they are a zf distributer and are not only reasonable but competent. many here can vouch for that.

I bought a rebuilt tc from Eriksson and it was fine. They are a very professional outfit and let us know if they give you a quote for the rbuild including tc and what the shipping costs are. It's a heavy tranny so probably won't be cheap but Eriksson has an agreement with either Fedex or UPS and you'll probably have to strap on a half pallet and they'll come fetch it.
