Any horror or success stories in replacing bottom seat covers with the various vendors?
I assume that this is a common "wear" item.
I have seen VW oem for ~400+
Ebay for ~160 and even for ~50

Thanks

I have a full set of black V-Tex from a Mk7 for cheap if you are interested- I think they have 1 year and 12k miles on them. The front swap is supposed to plug and play, but I've never done it. The rear swap is not worth the effort, apparently.

If you only need once piece, I would check the salvage yards for a seat bottom that's in good shape- many of the low mileage accident cars have nice interiors. The salvage yard in Worcester used to have lots of VWs. It also allows you to practice pulling the seat apart (which can be a significant pita compared to popping in a new seat).

Thanks, but if I can get a new one bottom for 140.00 I am not going to drive to Worcester and dig one out at a boneyard.

That's certainly one approach. Worcester was an example of a $2 yard fee and a $10 item. Drive to whatever yard you prefer. The learning curve is priceless... or perhaps not. $140? Hmmm, not for me.

which one specifically?
any other good VAG salvage yards here in NE?
I used to go to several, spread out in NE. I mentioned Worcester, only b/c they had a period where lots of later model VWs were easy pickings. I think that one was Sam's? I've been to many others, but often only one-time, so others can chime in. I enjoy pulling parts myself, and the DIY ethic....others? not so much.

When did you go to these yards? Places that would let you pick was something I used to do many many years ago. Now they have computer inventories of parts.

Yes, some of the yards have transitioned from PNP to provided parts, especially out west (it seems). Some of the SoCal yards got tired of poor behavior and loss of saleable parts. The other two trends have been increased safety and environmental regs which "force" salvage yards to restrict access, and some states have such high insurance premiums that yards have just shifted away from PNP. LKQ has also been buying up yards at the cyclic rate, but to their credit, they are still mostly DIY, and the computerization of inventory has made checking parts and finding cars much easier (along with slightly higher prices). As for NE yards, I'm up that way monthly. I was back in the BRKs 2 weeks ago, but haven't visited Sam's since last year. Just check to see if yards are pick n pull- as said, LKQ yards are computer inventory, with pictures of each car (that's an easy way to find TDIs, too), but are still PNP. I think we had a discussion thread on yards in NE a year? ago, a search will prolly find it. It sounds like you'd prefer to avoid PNP anyway, which may make the parts-provided places better, and the computer inventories helpful. I think car-part.com is the one I see mentioned at Fred's the most. I don't use it that often, b/c the LKQ's in the mid-Atlantic are really good, and the yards provide cars I can practice on before touching my own, but it might be helpful if you only need a cover or bottom.
