DO NOT DO THAT.
never ever fill a filter with anything other than fuel from the tank via a vacuum though the filter.
Same goes for oil filters too. install them dry.
never take advice that goes against procedures

Ummm the dirty side is the outside of the filter, clean side is the center hole, no damage done by prefilling the canister.

Stuff from the 80s Diesel lore hardly applies to todays cars.

Not lore.... it's actually part of the procedure from VW and in face nearly all procedures from manufacturers specify not to fill filters oil or fuel.
