Has anyone figured out how to remove the front headrests in the 2010 Golf?

My wife **hates** the headrests in my Golf because of how they're pitched forward. Her 2003 Honda Odyssey's headrests are vertical, which she finds more comfortable.

My idea is to try removing her headrest and flipping it backwards to see if she likes it better that way. Or if anyone has a better suggestion, I'd like to hear it.

I turned the headrest around in my 09 Jetta because of the extreme forward pitch. I just pushed in the adjustment button and pulled on it. Although, I did have to recline the seat in order to be able to pull it out all the way.

Do people actually rest their heads on the headrest? I'm completely unaware of mine.

Ugh, these are part of the new gov't standards for rear collisions. I think there are two viable solutions, one being the type of headrests found in all '08+ VWs and the other being active headrests (which, ironically enough, VWs used to have). I hate the headrests in my '09 Jetta. It really makes my neck uncomfortable because it actually pushed my head forward/down slightly. One day I'm going to take the darn thing apart and see if I can bend the posts or something. That, or I might order '05.5-'07 headrests which did not have this forward pitch to them. Of course, that will eliminate the ability to adjust the height of the headrest, but I don't care, the current ones are a pain in the neck...literally!

As for the '10 Golf headrests, you should be able to remove them by pushing the height adjustment button and then continuing to pull the headrest all the way out.

I don't think so. With the button pushed in, it's like the headrest hits a hard stop that keeps it from being extracted any further.

I've ordered one of these for my wife; I'll let everyone know if it's helpful:

Hmm. And I actually like them, most cars my head would never even be slightly supported (other then in an impact). But then I also think my Kirkey aluminum racing seat is comfy. I also tend to have a pretty straight up seating position.

I noticed the problem trying to remove them myself when trying to install seat covers... press that button all you want, the headrest is NOT coming out :(

I love my JSW but the headrests are poorly designed. As others have complained, they force my head uncomfortably forward so I have the seat back tilted back more than I'd like and I have the headrest fully extended, which helps but hurts visibility when turning to look behind.

I've tried to get them out but haven't been able to get them past the hard stop either. I hope someone figures this out! Turning them around might fix the problem...

Very strange that the headrests wouldn't be removeable, but then again, this is VW we're talking about  What happens if the headrest is damaged? Replace the whole seat?? I'm sure that there is a way to remove the headrest, '10 owners just haven't figured it out yet. Although, it shouldn't take a PhD in engineering to get it out!

please tell me your seat covers are meant for side airbags. sister-inlaw bought seat covers for her new kia and i had to remind her that she is blocking the side airbags!

Sit in the back seat.
Tilt the front seat back.
The post on your left has a tab for raising the headrest.
Raise the headrest as high as it will go.
Slightly push down the upholstery of the post to your right.
On the right hand side of the mechanism you see a slot.
Push the screwdriver into the slot.
Pull the headrest out while pushing screwdriver on right post and pushing tab on the left post.

It's a head restraint, not a head rest. It's similar to modifying your seatbelt. Don't do it if you don't have to.

OK, so I tried this procedure, but my wife still hates the seats in my car. I find this ironic, since pretty much every review of the Golf states that it has the one of the most comfortable interiors in its class.

So now I'm wondering what options I have with regard to replacing the seats themselves. I know that people upgrade their seats, for example, when they want Recarro (sp?) seats or something like that.

Has anyone explored this? What are my best options? I don't want to lose the features I already have, like heat, airbags, etc.

Thanks,

Steve

Haven't read the whole thread, but my Snarky first thought is...have you considered trading in the wife?

See preceeding post...now I HAVE read the complete thread...and I conclude...trade in the wife. She will never be happy. Her mission in life is to make you miserable and to question every desicision you make. Mine is the same way. I feel for you Bra' Kind regards.

Same complaint from my wife... my 2010 Golf TDI wagon has leather seat and I was checking at the possibility of getting a leather version of the head rest from Audi or from the new GTI with matching leather color to replace the stock Golf head rest. I wasn't able to remove the head rest but now that some one has provided a video, I'll give it a try. The stock seat on the 2010 Golf is simply one of the best non bucket stock seat I've ever sat on for car in this price range.

Ive had 3 cars with my wife. She has not liked one of them. I could care less honestly anymore. She has her cars and I have mine.

Tell her to get used to it or to just not ride in your car. lol

That's exactly what we've decided to do. If she's along for the ride, we take her car (Honda Odyssey minivan), even if we could have fit easily in my car, and even though her car consumes twice as much fuel. It's wasteful, but I'm too tired of listening to her complain about how uncomfortable my car is to fight it anymore.

This worked fine on my 2011 SportWagon. Turn the headrest around and reinsert it. You can now sit upright in your car seat.

This is an easy procedure developed by the team at the VW plant in Wolfsburg, hope it is helpful. You need four people, the procedure is to have one person at each of the two headrest poles, with one hand you push down on the fabric to expose the adjustment tab under the cap, each person needs to use an instrument like a flat blade screwdriver and holding the fabric down with one hand push in the adjustment tab with the other hand, both people do this at the same time on each pole. A third person pushes in the adjustment button and places one hand under the head rest while the fourth person on the other side of the head rest places both hands under the head rest and the headrest people lift up using rocket lift off force while the two pole people hold in the adjustment tabs at the same time. Or just drive in to the dealer and ask them to remove them for you while you sit in the lounge and drink coffee. This is the official procedure and you can easily do it at your own car manufacturing facility in your back yard.
