Remote Oil Filter on A3/AHU?

Is anyone ACTUALLY using a remote oil filter and/or bypass set up on an A3 with the AHU engine? (Besides drivebywire using an oilguard kit?)

Something like Amsoil's kit:

https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/bf.aspx

I'm interested in installing one, but would like to hear from someone actually using one. Pictures maybe?

I'd love a dieselgeek kit, but it is NOT for the AHU.

Thanks in advance.

That kit from JC Whitney looks pretty decent. And I am with you, paramedick, because taking that filter out is a PITA. The kit says it fits all 3/4 - 16 spin on oil filters. So I guess the stock filter would still work. And as far as bypass filters go, you could use this and kill two birds with one stone - http://www.trasko-usa.com/ .

I used the amsoil bypass beacause of the extra oil capacity and the amount of filtering media in the filter. the trasko looks like its a good filter but i didnt like the small bypass elements. That relocation kit looks like a great option as well. .

Bypass Kit for an 01 Beetle

New to posting. Has anyone installed a bypass kit on an 01 Beetle? There is just no room in the engine compartment. I have a brand new Amsoil BMK11 kit (not TDI specific) that I would like to install. Appreciate the help.

I have a 1999 beetle and am going to put in a bypass.I saw a picture on the Frybrid site showing a Beetle with a replacement cold air intake and cone filter.Removing the air box frees up a lot of space.then all you have to do is fabricate a mounting bracket.I ordered my intake over the weekend so I haven't started yet.If that doesen't give me enough room the battery is going to the trunk.

And why would you remove the original "COLD AIR INTAKE" that came from the factory only to install a "HOT AIR INTAKE" that sucks in hot air from under the Beetles VERY hot engine compartment?

You better figure out what you are doing before you completely botch up the design of the car!

I understand your concern.Although all of my changes are completely reversible. Also all accounts of similar intake mods have all shown positive results.

Thanks Mijbo, that is exactly what I needed to see.

How is the filter for changing with that sideways mount? Does it make a mess?

(Sorry to be so long in responding, I've been away from working on the A3 for awhile.)

I swore every time I changed the oil on the Jetta or Passat that I was going to do this.

A few folks have installed the oil filter relocation kit available from JC Whitney.

After changing the oil on my AHU TDI Corrado this weekend I think I'll be ording this dual filter setup before the next oil change. It was the messiest oil filter change that i've ever done.

For the New Beetle with ALH engine, you can use the Dieselgeek Amsoil bypass kit for the Golf/Jetta if you remove the low pressure AC line and redo the line to go directly from the AC compressor to the fitting behind the passenger headlight. This frees up the airspace meant for my bypass kit. Several have done it but I have no pictures.

I've been swearing I'm gonna order this. Thanks for the reminder. Ordered. The oversized oil cooler on the Passat has given an added degree of interesting to the oil changes.

Have you had a chance to install the kit? I am at the point of ordering one for myself and I'd love to hear what you have to say.

I did an oil change the other day and it was much better then the first oil change as I dropped the front cross member to make the R&R of the oil filter easier.

Just FYI, you can jack up on the front of the engine/trans slightly to give yourself more room to swap filters. I had to do that with my Corrado TDI and it worked fine for the rare need to change filters.

I bought the kit from JC Whitney. Interesting that it is marked "not for diesel engine use".

I spoke with the manufacturer. They state that the higher cold oil pressure of the diesel, combined with the formulation of the oil, causes it to eventually leak. Something about the casting process of the aluminum.

They have another division that makes this part for diesel engines. Anodized billet aluminum and approximately $200 for filter head and hoses. Ouch!

I'm not a metallurgist. This is a cast aluminum part, not machined. Just has appropriate finishing work done where needed on the filter head.

Opinions from knowledgeable folks?

I'm no engineer but if you listen to click 'n' Clack then are familiar with their "boooogus" response.

Diesel based oils contail more metals but the VW diesel oil pumps are the same/similar to the gas engines and I highly doubt that the more expensive design they pointed you towards would be any better.

I plan on purchasing the dual filter design. I plan to install it under the airbox in the corrado. I expect that I will only use their dual filter mount and the assembly that replaces the filter thus allowing the hoses to connect to the block. I'll have custom oil lines fabricated so there are no kinks and the hoses are out of the way from being snagged by something I run over.

I hope you take some pictures when you mount or at least after you're done mounting everything.
I'm curious as to where it is going to be mounted.

That is not true. Ask about this on the L.O.S.T. Jeep CRD and Mercedes shop forums and you will hear that aftermarket air intakes do not produce more power, and more often than not decrease filtration efficiency. But hey, maybe someone here has a dyno plot before and after installing a hot air intake, and put some numbers behind the discussion.

I ordered a JCW dual filter kit for my TDI Corrado on 2/6/09. I will take pictures of the install. I plan on using different hoses because I doubt they are the highest quality fittings and hoses. Besides I want a taylor fitted look.

I got my dual filter kit in the mail yesterday. The Kit is what I anticipated with the hoses looking a little short for what what I want to do.

It did have a sticker on it saying it wasn't for diesels but I could care less what they say about that. Now if people on here want to warn me then I'd be more inclined to listen. There is no differenace between the gas and diesel VW oil systems other then the oil type used.

I test fitted the dual filter mount on my Corrado today. It looks like I will have plenty of room for the large tdi filters and hoses
