The master key has a built in remote control. Can someone please tell me how to replace the battery inside it? I dare not force open any part of it in case it breaks, as it is very expensive to replace. I am just interested in case I need to change the battery in the future.

Thank you, eutog

Thanks, but just in case the site becomes unavailable, I thought I'd take a few pics of my own Key in various stages of disassembly.

Use a small screwdriver. Lift the half with the VW emblem carefully, while pulling the ends apart.

Apart like this...

This tiny lip fits into this detent, and is the only thing holding the two halves together. Break off the little lip and you'll have to use tape to hold them together. Be careful.

Once apart, separate the two halves. It can be tight.

The batteries are in the lower half.

Lift them out and replace them with new ones.

It takes two CR1620 3v Lithium batteries.

Make sure that the rubber gasget on the Button/Circuit board half is Clean before putting the two halves together. You don't want a poor seal or you'll risk water ingress and subsequent corrosion and ultimate failure of the assembly. Followed then by considerable lightening of your wallet.

Thanks, I rather enjoyed doing that "mini tutorial".

I may tackle something else, like "Fuel filter changing".

Can anyone think of anything they'd like to see a step-by-step photo series of on an A4 TDI? (Besides a Timing Belt change.) I'd love to do another photo series, but can't think of anything off the top of my head.

DZLKopf. How about a series of photos regarding
1) fuel filter change/water drain
2) oil and filter change
I have seen sites about these topics but no pictures.
Keep up the good work. Thanks eutog

Sometimes the remote will lose it's memory and need to be reprogrammed to the car when you change the battery. To do this:

1. Press either the lock or the unlock button on the remote.

2. Unlock the driver's door using the key.
