God help me, my JSW TDI has turned me into an eco-zombie. I bought the car for its combination of driving dynamics, size, cargo space and economy, but I am turning into a mileage fanatic. I watch the computer. I feather it, lug it, leave the A/C off, do everything I can to try to reach 50 mpg. Personal best so far is 49.5 for a 50 mile trip, or 47.4 for 600 fully loaded highway miles.
Boy, I have the exact same problem. Luckily I keep thinking "I have to really break it in good though," to put the pedal down, but once I lose that excuse, I fear I too will become an Real-time MPG computer obsessed eco-zombie you speak of.

Last weekend I drove to Fairmont, VW to help a friend and his family unload their uhaul full of their furnishings. This trip took me to I 68 west thru Maryland and into Morgantown, VW. There were many long steep grades going up and down with many long 7- 9 % grades . What was most impressive was the constant speed of the JSW TDI. I set the cruise for 71 mph. Going up or down 71 mph.You can feel the effect of the engine's ability shut down then a slight pick up on the way down these mountains maintaining a very steady 71 MPH. What laugh watching cars near the bottom of the grades pour it on, going into the up grades, then fade halfway up. What a blast diving a diesel is, in those conditions. MPG avg a tad under 40. I passed only 1 (older Jetta sedan) TDI on the trip they must have been hyper mileing at about 55 MPH. Yes I like the though of higher MPG, I just couldn't help myself under these conditions.

I signed the contract with Wes Greenway's Alexandria VW. I dealt with Roy Estevez (Direct line 703-535-8480 & Mobile 571-309-6940). I talked to him today. He says that the manager talked to the regional manager, and they believe they can order the 2010 in July.... we will see

VW May 09 TDI sales stats

1 in 3 Jettas a TDI in May.

Looks like cheaper diesel and rising gas prices combined with word of mouth and an advertising barrage are making TDIs a major player.

Also, interesting to see only 1,600 JSWs to 9,000 sedans in the same period (all trims). If the % that is TDIs is the same for both models, that means only 533 JSW TDIs in May, which is not very many, which, as far as I can tell, means VW is barely importing any of these things.

I don't know if this has been suggested before. To make sure 507 is the only oil added or used on 2009 TDI, I peeled off the front and back labels off the bottle. I used a single edge razor blade to lift the top edge, then pulled it off as I used a hair dryer to warm the glue. next I used some rubbing alcohol to clean an area of the tray where the hood latch, is first. Then placed them side by side on the tray. I started at the front and worked back with some of the label going over the raised edge. They seem to stick very well. I did cut off the bar code on rear label for a better fit. dhal

Yes, but year to date they sold more JSW's than Passat sedans and wagons combined, and more JSW's than Rabbits - not bad.

Finally, the 40MPG per tank barrier is broken...

Well, it took over 11,000 miles but we just got our first tank over 40MPG at 40.8 MPG. Yep, I've rechecked all my figures and while the on board computer usually overstates, this time it read 40.0 for the tank, so it understated. It's been our experience that the more idling or stop and go driving that you do, the more the computer has a tendency to overstate. More steady driving, as with this tank, tends to yield computer mileage that is closer to reality. We do not drive the car to attain high MPG's, we drive pretty normally with tire pressures just over the recommended range. No complaints.

I'm working on my sons computer and the software isn't loaded and my camera flash doesn't always work. To respond to paul a picture is worth a thousand words. I would have a tough time with a sharpie (just joking. Seriously , the decals should eliminate any lauguage barriers. dhal

Whoo-hoo! Me too. Drove from Austin down to a family reunion in South Padre Island, Texas last Wednesday. Was hoping for some good mpg even with 5500 miles on the car but hit an unusually windy day and ended up with 36.8 mpg on a 6 hour drive. Used cruise control for the first time.

On the way home it was a pretty darn still day and the temps stayed between 102 and 104 so the AC was on 3 most of the time. I was duking it out with all the F-350s, was loaded down with the family and luggage and have a pretty burly bike rack on top and managed 41.6 mpg. How cool is that?

So psyched about this car. My first 5500 miles have been 97% city driving so it felt great to get it out on the open road.

15K long term MPG=41.9, now my 96 passat TDI long term was 49. But again the 09 is a real performance diesel, gotta loose something.

Guys, I have a question. Planning a trip to Canada this August, and I have about 12000 miles on the car.
1.-do I need to do anything before I leave? besides check fluids and tires?
2.-do I need about availability of Diesel fuel (gasoil) on the way there?

Thanks for input

No problems with fuel. I would fill up in the US as your prices are better right now. Check the fluids and tire pressure before leaving and bring a liter or 2 of the proper oil as it is not usually available in auto stores.
Have fun!! :D

has anyone successfully installed the euro rear taillight and configured the rear fog yet? I bought the light as soon as it was available on oempl.us but haven't had time to install it yet. I'm hoping to have it installed within this next week, but if anyone has any thoughts they'd be appreciated.

I'd love to see some photos of that when you're done. I suppose you're installing a new switch for the rear fog also. What did you have in mind for that? Where will you put it?

When I was assigned a number it had an ETA associated with it and damn it if it didn't show up exactly on schedule. I had to periodically call my dealer and he was able to tell me what was up when it left the plant.

Breaking In Nicely

... been a while since I've visited, but this month I'm actually AVERAGING over 40MPG... and achieved (by trip computer only) over 52 MPG on a ride home from my folks summer home (this is about 50 miles and covers mostly secondary roads with speed limits ranging between 35 and 55MPH, with some highway at 60MPH and I hit about 7 minutes of stop and go traffic). Check out my fuelly link and you'll see a nearly unbroken pattern of higher MPG every month. Hope all is well with you folks. I've had NO issues with the car yet at over 13K miles.

same here Q, 13,456 to be exact, but averaging 36.8. Should be better as I go to Canada in a couple of weeks, because I am in stop and go traffic every week.

You must be new. This is the grand daddy of all threads. At 446 pages I would say it's not a mistake!

Getting close to 25k miles, over 45mpg average, and no issues to date!

I love this car! I actually find myself taking the 40 mile route home some days, just to get more drive time. The direct route is 11 miles! :)

Just checking in. Almost 16K now, so far so good other than hitting a deer a while back  Fortunately it was a mere scrape although the beast did take out the passenger side mirror. Which brings me to my question ...

Who has replaced the side mirrors with the non-OEM blue wide angle ones? I'm having a heck of a time getting the mirror to snap into place. Any tips or tricks?

ask, and you shall receive:

(see my vortex thread for the full set of photos and info: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=4476757)

I spun the coils down more, installed the euro tail, and installed the front fogs at the same time. I then went to WaterWërks last weekend and placed 3rd in the Novice Auto-X class, and first in the mk5 jetta/golf show class (beating out another black mk5 jetta tdi by just 1 point).

here's the NA rear tail vs. the euro rear tail. You can see the extra reflector in the backup light location. The OEMPlus light came with all the bulbs already installed, so it was literally a quick plug n' play install on that end. I had the vag com update changed before I did the wiring at the front (I've had a euro switch with front & rear fog for a while now). The wiring was done a little later on. The only issue now is that something in the ECU isn't 100% correct: the rear fog only comes on when the headlights are on. If I pull out to the rear fog position with only the running lights on, the headlights turn on instead. That said, it works very well while the headlights are on.

Here's how the car sits right now, with the coils spun down more, the flat-black Golf GT front end with R-Line fog grilles, and OEM Euro projector fogs (with yellow Hella Optilux bulbs). I used the ECS Tuning euro fog relay harness to wire up the front fogs. I had already pieced together the other hardware needed.

and at the show:

someone's video of one of my short auto-x runs... the car had no traction out there on its factory Michelin's...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWuwXGDLoHk

and a couple other photos taken my others from last weekend:

other things on the car... I mentioned the euro switch. I also have the OEM euro aspherical side mirrors on both sides, and the smoked sidemarkers have been installed since the 2nd day of ownership.

I picked the car up on December 28th (iirc), and I'm at about 19,700 miles right now. So far I've averaged about 3000 miles a month, but it seems this month will be a little under average. The car has held up wonderfully and it's been a dream. With the way I drive I average about 35 - 36mpg overall (99% highway miles), but have seen 45mpg on a couple long trips that are mostly done with the cruise-control at around 50 - 65mph.

I can't wait to get new wheels on the car :p
