Bad news...

Took our trade-in car today to crunch numbers, and when they told us the trade-in value, it was over $6,000 under NADA/Bluebook, etc, so we just walked out, leaving "our" poor Laser Blue JSW TDI w/ Nav on the lot for some other guy, so didn't rack his brains for 10 months waiting for it...

The car is probably already sold to some other guy. In the 30 minutes, we were there, there were at least 3 other people looking at it... :(
Where have you been for the past ten months? Even in a "normal" economy, you don't put your eggs in one basket; Trading in to a dealer is the last option you should consider. In current conditions, should you really be surprised that the dealer wants to lowball you? Duh!

You've had most of a year to prepare for this moment. Ever hear of Uncle Henry's? I'm afraid I have no sympathy. You deserve to lose this car.

BTW, this is probably posted elsewhere already, but just finally saw a VW commercial really pushing the TDI versus a hybrid (a Prius, but it wasn't named specifically). Why has it taken this long? They should have been pushing it long ago...silly VW[oA], TDI's do make sense!
Absolutely agree. VW has done far too little to promote diesel in the real (U.S.) world. How many people, do you suppose, know what that "TDI" on your rear end stands for?

When will the TN plant be operational? What vehicles will they be producing? JSW TDI's perhaps????? Cheers
I found this link, plant schedule etc. I know how frustating the wait was for me for my JSW. The plus quality jobs for americans what, could be better. I would like to tour the plant when it opens at somepoint.

What, so I'm not even entitled to deserve a fair trade from my dealer?

Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth. I was looking at a new car recently (not to replace the JSW!) and got a trade in allowance of $7500 on my 9-2x! That was on May 1st. I sold it on my own this evening for $12,500. I agree that you can't put all your eggs in one basket and expect a high trade...it is supply and demand. The dealer could care less that my car was impecably maintained and cared for - they were just going to sell it at auction. Its tought to time these things obviously, but when you are at the mercy of one dealer trade-in's are often low. Especially in this economy...

Hope you are able to get your Golf TDI or another JSW. Sorry it didn't work out! Perhaps try and sell the other car first, budget some for a cheapie rental (my wife gets to drive a $130/wk Hyundai for 2 weeks now!!)

Good luck...

Saw this ad on TV last night for the first time, not sure how new it actually is. I thought it was pretty awesome. It is true--I love the how the engine sounds on this car around 4k rpms.
Nice ad that's running around the Northeast too, but I sure wish VW would stop implying that anyone using this car "normally" is going to get anything resembling 50+ MPG. The reps at the NY Auto Show were spouting that 50+ MPG too in the real world and would not budge when I asked them about it. It is the LINE. I'm not at all unhappy with my average MPG, and we don't drive to get the highest MPG's, but touting a realistic 40+ MPG with such a great car would be a bit more honest, and less disappointing to those new to the VW diesel experience. I understand the marketing and can appreciate why its done, but it just doesn't sit right with me...

Added ProClip iPhone 3G Mount and Tint

This weekend I added a ProClip iPhone mount to the new JSW. I'm a rabid iPhone user, but am aware that the touch screen combined with having to hold it in my hand makes for more dangerous driving and/or less convenient phone use. 99% of my car iPhone use is either the iPod music app or the Google Maps with GPS.

My goal was to mount the phone higher so that it would be more at my eye-line and sturdy enough where one-finger use would be a piece-of-cake and not be moving the phone all over the place. In addition I expect a higher location in front of the windshield to provide a better signal for the cell network data and GPS. I also love the clean and simple minimalist design of the VW interior and wanted to find a mount that matched that design and added as little clutter as possible.

I spent dozens of hours doing internet research to figure out if there was a suitable mount that my my requirement for utility and also for aesthetics. It was no easy task. Most mounts are cheap and flimsy, have horribly clumsy mounting solutions and are just plain suck.

One mounting solution that received many positive notes was made by ProClip. They use a two-part system, where you get a mount that is custom-tailored for your vehicle, and then a second part custom-made that holds your device and attaches to the vehicle mount. this system provides custom fit and finish like no other, but there is a hefty price to go with it, both pieces together cost $75 shipped. Yes, that is very expensive.

They have three mounts for the JSW: Vent Mount, Right Side Center Console, and Right Side Floor Console.I wanted the phone to be as close to eye-level as possible to maintain as much peripheral vision of the road as possible when using the iPhone, and to minimize the distance my eyes had to travel when switching focus from one to the other. Therefore I went with the Vent Mount.

They have tons of device holders, it seems like anything you could have, they'll have a holder for. I went with the iPhone 3G Padded Holder with Tilt and Swivel.

The ordering process was smooth and the items arrived quickly, as promised. I had a few concerns about the mount when I ordered, but luckily all were proven to be without merit:
1) The sample vehicle mount on their website is a silver greyish color, but the one that arrived was a smooth matte black that matches the console trim perfectly. It is made out of plastic, but is not flimsy and seems to be very high quality.
2) In some reviews I read, images of the mount and device holder both had garish company logos on them. I was prepared to do whatever modification was needed to keep the console looking sleek and uncluttered, but it turns out they were all just stickers that were easily removed.
3) The installation instructions described using adhesive strips to install the mount, and indeed the mount came with two small adhesive strips on it. However, their use was entirely optional as the clips on each end snap securely into place without their use. I suppose that if you wanted to use the adhesive, it would make the mount even secure, but I am using it with just the strength of the clips' tension, and it is very sturdy and does not budge. In other words—you do not need to worry about the adhesive marring your car's interior. Also, not using the adhesive enables you to temporarily remove the whole device with ease.

Installation was a piece of cake. The mount matches the interior perfectly, and it holds the iPhone snuggly. While holding the phone, it leaves access to all buttons open as well as leaving the bottom open for access to the dock connector port, most likely to be used in the car for charging. (Speaking of charging, get this 97¢ Cigarette Lighter Power Adapter to USB from Monoprice, 100% awesome). The mount holds the phone very firmly, allowing it to even be used horizonyally, with almost no give, which is perfect for hitting the menu button and the touch screen without the phone moving out of your preferred position.

In actual use, I could not be happier with the mount. It makes using the iPod function and GPS Maps capability much easier and less distracting, and does not take away from the beauty of the car's interior. It's true that I find the necessary audio cable to be visually unpleasing and cluttering, however, in about one month's time the new iPhone 3.0 software will be available and will enable stereo Bluetooth (A2DP) and remove the need to have any wires coming from the phone, and instead simply require a small Bluetooth receiver to mini-jack to connect to the Aux-in port in the center armrest. That'll be niiiiiiice.

Click here to see 6 more images of the mount from various angles.

I also had the windows tinted last week. As with my last 2 vehicles, I chose Llumar ATR35CH High Performance Metal Combination film. 35% is the max tint for front windows in Oregon, and I prefer to keep all the windows at the same %. This film has been great and I'd recommend it. Here is what the car looks like with the tint, sorry for the low-quality photos, I'll get some good ones next time I wash the car:

Good write-up on the Proclip mount Scott-O; I've been using their mounts for years and have them in all our vehicles (00' F350, '05 Jetta TDI, '09 JSW TDI, '01 CRV), and they fit and work beautifully in each one. They're more spendy than other mounts, but you won't find anything that fits individual devices and/or vehicles as well. Nice looking JSW by the way!

I have one of these dash vent units for a GPS, but without the tilt-swivel mount. Be sure to get the optional tilt-swivel mount ($15.99 more), because otherwise the angle of the GPS screen is tilted too far up, allowing for too much glare.

Thanks for the props Orygun. My main goal was to write the review I wish I'd found when looking for this info prior to my own purchase. Hopefully someday, someone Googles for "Jetta ProClip" and this comes up and makes their day.

dr61, I agree the tilt-swivel is essential to make sure you get the positioning just right, and especially on devices like the iPhone with glass screens, avoiding glare is important.

FYI, it is possible to add tilt-swivel after the fact with an extra adapter, but as usual with ProClip, it don't come cheap.

New here. Been a reader for sometime. Wife decided that with the second one coming we'd better get a family-friendlier car, not that my lexus sedan wasn't but it is prior to latch law, so I've called around and got a quote around 25k for a white jsw with DSG (I want a 6 speed manual but since this is for my wife), ipod adapter and Rubber mats. I am just wondering if that's a good price. I really didn't do a lot of haggling. Just sent a few emails out and got replies, and picked the one that was ready to give me a price quote without none of the mumbo jumbo. But then I'm reading how the 2010 will be even better than the 2009, so my question is should I just get this or wait a few more month (assuming 2010 will become avail at the end of this year)

If you don't mind the styling changes on the exterior (some like it, some don't) I would wait for a 2010 model - maybe get a deposit in somewhere - you get bluetooth and the multi-function steering wheel standard. You also get the touch screen RCD 510 Premium 8 radio...

Well, went out and got the JSW. Took a look at the 2010 JSW online and wasn't really impressed. Since I don't use cellphone no need for the bluetooth, we have had two other cars with steering mounted control and it wasn't all that... But then not exactly thrilled with the 2009 JSW's styling either but it is probably the most practical car on the market, in my mind. Drove it back home and was pretty impressed with the kick it had. I've test drove it before but on the local streets only. And after I got home took a look at the mpg and it was 41. That's pretty dang impressive. Well ended up with 16" regular wheel. They had two others with a few bells and whistles but I'm not a real gadget person and neither is my wife. Just happy to get a diesel. It drove nothing like the old diesel rabbit I had as a teenager. out the door price was 26.8k. I was able to haggle and get a few hundreds off from the initial quote.

I put a $500 usd deposit down on a JSW 2010 on Saturday. The contract says the price is invoice -$500. I like the grill of the 2010, and I think the 2010 includes or makes optional the back-up camera.

Does anyone know invoice for the 2010 JSW?
Why in the world would a dealer give you a price like that for a car that doesn't stay on lots for more than a few days at MSRP? Do you have any story to go with this insane price?

2010 Sportwagen Getting New Face Early

Apologies if this has already been posted. I did a few quick searches and did not see it.

Crediting Autoblog for the story here ...

http://www.autoblog.com/2009/05/29/v...gets-new-face/

... NextAutos reported 5/29 that VW confirmed the 2010 Sportwagen will have the Mk 6 style face. They quote the VW spokesperson as saying "In order to simplify production, we'll make the change to our Jetta and as an added benefit, we believe the customers will appreciate the differentiation from the current sedan."

The photos are of the European version with the updated dash design and other changes. The report seems to indicate that the U.S. car will not be the Mk6 (really more like Mk5.5) but rather will sport the new front end only and be otherwise the same car as your 2009 model. Not sure about that tho.

Has anyone else been turned into an eco-zombie?

God help me, my JSW TDI has turned me into an eco-zombie. I bought the car for its combination of driving dynamics, size, cargo space and economy, but I am turning into a mileage fanatic. I watch the computer. I feather it, lug it, leave the A/C off, do everything I can to try to reach 50 mpg. Personal best so far is 49.5 for a 50 mile trip, or 47.4 for 600 fully loaded highway miles.

Can't.
stop.
mustn't.
go.
fast.
must keep.
throttle.
58.
mph.
