Anyone know if it can be used in another year if AMT kills you this year?
Only in the purchase year. Unfortunately if you don't qualify on the current tax year then it's lost. Sucks for some out there.

Well, I just cut the average mileage in half....

...family and elderly parents necessitated something bigger that wasn't a minivan... but got 25MPG on the way home on RUG, so not so bad...

EDIT: Just to be clear, this is in addition to, not instead of, the JSW, and I admit, I felt pretty good buying a Ford during these economic times.. and to sit inside, only the blue oval gives away that this Flex is a Ford... no lie.

That's not so bad for a vehicle that size I guess--hope it stays up there for you. Is the Flex really that much bigger than the JSW? It'd be hard to bring myself to buy a Ford; my wife's old mustang was just not well done, in multiple respects.

Tough to get 6 people in the JSW when two are in car seats, and two are in their 80's ... and luggage to boot... along with a class III hitch with oil cooler, 4500lb tow capacity, leather, Sync, bluetooth, and AWD... and with a sticker of $36,555 we were out the door at $29,385... and it gets the same mileage, roughly, as my 1990 Audi 90Quattro 20v that has 100 less HP. Nothing I'd like more than to be happy with American iron... we hope so too. The JSW is good for most of what we do, but with kids with friends and a 70lb shepherd/husky cross I'm livin' the suburban dream :) Besides, with the look of the thing I can pretend I'm really from the hood :D

At long last, my JSW is in and ready to be picked up today.

My dealer tells me production on this model has stopped and that the re-tooling for the new body style has commenced.

Looks like this thread is nearly dead. Is there anyone still here?

Cargo box for JSW

Just a report on how my 2005-vintage Yakima box worked on our new JSW TDI. We took a 270 mile trip from Redding, CA to the Bend, OR area for skiing and general fun. I thought the box might be rather large for the car, but it just fit with a bit of flexing of the antenna. Very little wind noise on the highway (much more with just the Thule load bars without box). We averaged 41 mpg for the trip (40 going up, 43 coming back, more downhill) using winter fuel. Speeds averaged 55 mph overall because of two-lane roads, and we climbed from 700 feet to 6200 feet in elevation (Mt Bachelor). We noticed some disruption in Sirius radio reception, probably due to the box overhanging the shark-fin. We carried 5 pairs of XC skiis, 2 pr snowshoes, 3 sleds, ski boots in the box.

road trip

Put 2200 mi on the JSW last week on vacation, driving to Destin and back! Got 39-41 mpg while still trying (a little) to break it in. It did great, and we brought a ridiculous amount of stuff home from the parents house--2 dressers, one with a bookshelf-type hutch, along with some random small items. I didn't think we'd be able to get it all in! Unfortunately the pics are on my wife's parents camera, so I don't have them yet. My headliner got a little dented/scraped from the hutch jammed up against it, but otherwise everything came through OK.

Man, I love this car! :D

btw, sweet pics dave, that box looks great on the JSW!

as an aside, doesn't the rear antenna screw off? which brings me to another question...it appears that there is a window antenna on the left rear trunk window, so why two antennas? I couldn't find anything about either one in the manual.

Yes, I unscrewed the rear mast antenna while fitting the box, then put it back on. I believe the 'shark fin' part is used to pick up sat radio signals; this part was entirely under the box.

I would guess that the side window antenna picks up certain frequencies better than the top antenna.

At long last, a light is visible.

After 9 months of waiting, getting screwed with by dealers, and then having trouble getting a reasonable price for the car we had to sell to be replaced by the JSW, we're finally on the verge of acquiring our JSW TDI. I'll spare you the details for now, but I will say that without Chris Farnham, none of it would be possible. He has proved himself to be helpful beyond measure and and all-around stand-up guy. I will detail the whole epic journey after the car arrives, which should be in 2-3 weeks (getting shipped from PA). (White w/ Beige, Manual, Pano, rear bags).

In the mean time I have a few questions for you folks, I searched as much as I could but could not find good answers to the below questions, any help would be much appreciated:

1) For folks with dogs: How does the V-Tex hold up to dog claws? While I'll be glad to never have to again pull individual dog hairs out of the seat fabric one by one for seemingly hours on end, I am concerned about the dog's claws scratching up the V-Tex. A valid concern?

2) Following question 1, does anyone know of place that makes seat covers specifically for the JSW, and even better a place that just offers seat covers for the bottom? I haven't been able to find any, so it looks like I might have to enlist the effort of a seamstress acquaintance.

3) Are there any VW dealerships in the Northwest that have a reliable service departments? Since the services will (hopefully) be few and far between, I'd have no problem making a roadtrip out of it to ease my mind. Your experiences with dealers' service departments, good or bad, in the NW would be appreciated.

4) Break-in. I've read a bunch of info on this here, but there are some conflicting suggestions. What have you guys done for break-in and how has it worked out so far? Just pointing to a link and anything you can add would be exceptional.

5) QSHIP - that bumper protector of yours--any links to where I can buy one, product numbers, or pics? much appreciated!

6) Anyone know of a carpet cargo mat? I daily take many mail bins to the post office, so I don't want a rubber one (I slide stuff around to get it packed efficiently) but would also prefer not to put too much wear on the original carpet.

7) Should I wax the car immediately? Or does it come with a coat of something on it? What has worked for you guys?

Thanks everyone!

2) I have used a dog seat cover that hooks temporarily over the headrests. Easy to use and works great.
Like these or something similar:

7) Since your car will probably be at least a couple of months old from its build date, I would just wax immediately. I did that to mine and it looks great.

I'm not touching the break-in issue!!!

Wow, that site for dog seat covers is amazing. I really could have used that with our last car. Since the JSW has V-Tex though, I'm mostly concerned about scratches and would like something that is not very obtrusive and super quick to deploy and remove, i.e. just for the seat bottom, not the back rest. If that site doesn't make them, I doubt nayone will, looks like we're gonna go the custom-made route.

Thanks for the tip on the waxing. I know a good coat right off the bat will really help preserve the car's paint thorough it's life. Has anyone used any kind of sealant, or should i stick with just wax?

Since these are shipped by rail I would 1st Clay Bar the car then Put polish on it......I prefer the Zaino system!
Actually in my instance, it is being shipped via a motor freight car carrier. This isn't an inter-dealer transfer, but a dealer-to-customer shipment (a true testament to how badly VW dealers and distribution suck in general).

And yes, it will get clay-barred for sure. More than likely I will pay to get the exterior detailed on arrival as I don't have the time or patience required to do the job properly--I just need to know the right services to request. thanks for the quick reply!

Well, actually, the Port is very close to the dealer, so no train is involved. Though perhaps it was on a train before the ship came to port, we'll never know. Anyway, Claybar it is.

1. I think the biggest problem with the V-tex is the dog sliding around so I would definitely suggest some kind of seat cover, blanket, etc. If I'm just taking one of the dogs, I throw a big blanket over the seat and they do OK once they settle down.

2. The Gorilla Gear mat is carpeted and works really well. I especially like the dividers that velcro down.

Congrats on your soon-to-be wagon. Excellent color combo :)

Our dogs ride in back. No experience on the V-Tex. We did buy and install the upper dog gate. Now we just have nose prints on the back 3 windows...:(

Cost of seat covers might be the same as the dog gate...

We drove it normally during break-in. No oil consumption, but I thought mileage would be better...

5) QSHIP - that bumper protector of yours--any links to where I can buy one, product numbers, or pics? much appreciated!

I need this info also.

The Gorrilla mat kit with the velcro dividers is a great thing!
