I'm not sure, but this may be the first time I've seen a "spec" JSW TDI with the rear air bags.

I don't see any drawbacks, I tried to get a car that had them, but no luck. Increased safety basically.unsub1 said:And what is everyone's take on the rear airbag option? Are there any downsides (child seats, etc.) or is it a no-brainer?

Would your insurance be less if you had them?CountryBoy said:I wanted them but read that the car managed the 5 star side impact rating without them. Every little bit helps though. Didn't manage to snag them on my car.

We decided to go with the side airbags even though I have a 4 month old and a 4 year old. I read a lot and decided that from age 0 to 3 the child is in a properly mounted seat that should insulate them from a SEAT SIDE airbag which deploys OUTWARDLY as in the JSW. From age 4 on the child is in a booster seat which replicates a larger human in terms of where the child is situated. I would NOT have gotten the airbags if they deployed from the door INWARD. It's a calculated risk, but I decided that the pros outweighed the cons. CRITICAL to all this with kids is that they are properly situated in their APPROVED seats.unsub1 said:That was kind of my worry; my baby boy and my puppy dog. I keep her harnessed and tethered in the back seat but it's certainly not easy to control how she's oriented.

In other news, I LOVE the "Sunshine Kids" Ultra Mat that protects the rear seats from the somewhat rough child safety seats. I am satisfied that they do not compromise the proper fitting of the child safety seat. They fit very nicely. Far less importantly, they would look good in either a grey interior like ours or a black interior. About $25 a piece from Amazon.com with free shipping.
Using the online form to get a quote for insurance, they did not have the rear air bags as an option so there was no way to tell if there would be a difference. Called up a rep and gave them the VIN, and they said there was no information in the system yet, so they had me complete the online form by telling them year, make, model, etc...pugman said:Would your insurance be less if you had them?![]()
The steering wheel on mine was too far away until two weeks ago.upsbroke said:I know I read this a ways back about someone complaining the steering wheel was too far away. I only got my JSW afew days ago and I've only driven it a couple of times-but I haven't read anyone mentioning the tilting/telescoping steering wheel. If it's already been mentioned-my bad!

35.9 MPG average on the compuVWter
35.55 on my HP 12C Financial Calculator
Included were several short trips to daycare, my wife's leadfoot on I-95 where you get killed doing less than 75MPH, some moderate 30-50MPH country trips, lots of Boston city traffic, and unseasonably cold weather with lots of rain.
Got diesel fuel on my sneakers from the last moron feeding the concrete with his nice spill ( a true welcome back to the oil burning world ).
Not particularly moved by the MPG experience, glad ULSD is $2.84 and not $4.75. My wife has not yet asked me why we didn't buy the brand new Ice Blue Saab 9-3 Wagon down the street for $24K now that GM is giving away cars. I am prepared with a response that involves world oil markets and other things that will put her to sleep before she can argue back.
Car was filled by the dealer, so next may be more or less acurate. In other news I picked up a quart of 507 spec to keep in the car at the dealer for $8.14. I was expecting it to be even more.
Now, I'm thinking about a Stanadyne regimen. Anyone BTDT?
Feeling stupid? I was last night. Couldn't find the release for the fuel door. Left the station. Checked manual when I got home. Looked where it was supposed to be. Nope. ***? I actually called my sales guy to find out it is a spring loaded push latch. You know that school for the gifted cartoon where the kid is pushing on the door that says "pull?" That was me. Damn good thing I can laugh at myself.
Two JSW's spotted at Red Hook Brewery last night. Mine and Matt's (TDi_JettaWagEn). Nice to meet you Matt and see your nice ride. Thanks for the beer.... and I covered your bill

Eggsalad and congratulations!Plonker said:Got my JSW this afternoon- it is a BEAUTIFUL car (black/black, 17" wheels, big roof, auto, mats, tinted)
I have to put in a plug for Matt Hansen at Strong VW in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was on top of things from the start, and never pushed anything on me. The sale was smoother than butter- might as well have been any other vehicle, not a limited-production run, impossible to find sportwagen TDI. I cannot praise him enough for the ease with which this all went down. All for MSRP and no ridiculous dealer fees.
I'll be taking some photos once I return home. Any requests for close ups or specifics? If not, I'll try to cover as much as possible.
Now to sleep before an exciting first road trip.
I would guess that tag implies the presence of rear *curtain* airbags which are standard in the JSW. The airbags that are optional are the ones in the rear door.CountryBoy said:When driving my shiny new wagon the other day I looked back to make a lane change and noticed on the "C" pillar there is an "airbag" tag. According to everyone the car does not have rear airbags. Are these airbags standard and the rear airbag option simply another type of rear airbags? Was this a trim piece used on a non-rear airbag equipped car?
Sort of, except they're not in the rear door, they're sometimes referred to as "Thorax" air bags and they are located longitudinally in the outside of the rear seats.... they inflate outwards towards the door instead of inwards.scott_o said:I would guess that tag implies the presence of rear *curtain* airbags which are standard in the JSW. Still working on the DVD which could have been done in 10 minutes without the juvenile German humor....of course, who am I to talk about juvenile humor?kzoc said:Q-
Did you get a chance to watch the intro DVD that came with your car? The gas door was explained there, along with much dry German humor... My wife now has it quoted on her facebook page!

Call the other dealer's billing department and tell them you want a refund on your deposit. Don't go through the salesman. Don't be afraid to dispute the charge through your credit card company if you have to.
Me too!jvance said:Funny - I always read your username as TDI Man Toby![]()
