Did you buy this? I'm wondering what it looks like and how it holds up. The brushed aluminum looks like overkill and is a little difficult to order.

As someone else suggested, I think the best solution is a textured rubber product.

The brushed aluminum may indeed be overkill, but I figured it wouldn't look too bad on our platinum grey... likely much better than scrapes from my four year old's sandy sandal scratches from the beach and my 70lb shepherd's claw marks..I'm going to cover the metal with a urethane sheet. I'll send a photo after the install, but here's one for now:

http://www.autoschultz-shop.de/shop/start.php?volkswagen_golf_5_variant_komfort_und_schutz.php

... and the ordering shouldn't be too bad... it's a regular VW part I found on this dealer's website via Googling the part # http://www.faulknervw.com/ Now, question for you... the Sportwagen rear already has a cargo cover, no? So what did you order?

2009 JSW TDI on order

My wife and I are debating between getting a JSW TDI or a 4WD Ford Hybrid Escape. They are different cars, but we want a fuel-efficient vehicle with space for stuff. One of the main concerns my wife has about the JSW is the lack of 4WD because we like to ski and head to the mountains several times a year, plus we might move back to New England someday...

Thoughts and comments? ….
I'm making a change from a Volvo AWD wagon to a JSW TDI and also will be going to nearby snow country in the winter as usual. I will buy a set of take-off VW 16" wheels, and install 4 winter tires on them for use between Nov.-March. Also I have a set of cable 'chains' for use when required by law (usually only on major highways in my area). Except in deep snow I don't anticipate a problem (the Volvo has about 3" more clearance), and expect better performance on hard pack snow and ice compared to the Volvo on all-season tires.

My Sportwagen had a cargo cover :), until I failed to secure it and it slid out the back of the open hatch when pulling away from a traffic light. Quite an expensive lesson. :(

Please report on your experience with the aluminum plate, including whether you are able to order it through a US dealership. I was going through the German dealership you reference and ordering in German is not my specialty. :)

I have asked the people at Elemmat if they would consider making one out of their diamond-plated rubber mat material, but I don't know if they have worked with adhesives before so that might be a non-starter. I'll report back what I hear.

Hopefully with all that torque at your disposal the cargo cover flew right over the bumper without scratching it since it is unprotected :) :D :)

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Indeed it did! Something akin to Wile E. Coyote running off a cliff and finding himself standing in midair for three seconds before falling. The car moved forward and the cargo cover didn't. The cargo cover sat suspended in the air for three seconds before, in shock, it realized that it was no longer in a car -- at which time it promptly fell to the pavement and got run over, and over and over.

At least that's how I visualize it in my mind. I didn't realize that I had lost it for about 30 minutes. :)

Well, it could only have been better if it had augured in to the pavement leaving only a clean hole and a puff of smoke before a large anvil fell on the whole mess :D T-t-t-t-That's all Folks!

Maybe I missed something but why were you driving with the hatch open???

It increases the open, airy feel of the car. Pano roof open, four windows down and the lift-gate open and you almost feel like you're on a motorcycle!

:D

OK, nothing so adventuresome -- I was taking one of these:

to put in storage and it wouldn't fit in the cargo area with the lift-gate closed. Boring, I know.

John,
Interesting about your right rear brake. My right rear did exactly the same thing. I took it in to your favorite dealership and they fixed it right up. Said it was a busted caliper.

2009 JSW TDI on order
Just got a call from the Chico, CA dealer that they have a JSW TDI, manual, pano roof, Ipod adaptor, black/tan in stock. Customer backed out of sale. They are still asking MSRP + $2000 (like last July when I first contacted them), however the salesman seemed to soften on that markup when I told him I had one on order for MSRP. I'm not interested in the color or roof option, so I did not pursue it further.

I really wish someone would use my line:

"I'll pay you MSRP plus as much money as you can hold up your butt in Susan B. Anthony dollars. I get to film the insertion and post it on Youtube."

Sounds like the folks in Chico should stick to what they do best: Making Sierra Nevada! Celebration Ale should be out soon.

Initial Engine Break In

I will be picking up my JSW TDI in Cleveland in the next 2-3 weeks and driving it back to the south suburbs of Chicago, total mileage on the trip about 320 miles. Most of the trip will be traversing Ohio and Indiana along scenic I-80, ha ha ha.

My question is, what is the recomended driving pattern on a trip like this with regard to proper engine break-in?

Anything bad with doing 80-85 MPH on a new TDI motor? The unfortunate part of this trip is that it falls about 1 week from my wifes due date.

Even though it is to be her car, I know she would not be to pleased with me for missing the birth of daughter #2 while retrieving her new TDI.

Dealer has offered to have someone drive to car to me for about $400 or have it shipped on an enclosed truck for $750. Not sure I fell good about either of those options.

Thanks in advance for comments on proper driving for initial break in.

RE: Break-in

I think you'll want to avoid keeping it at the same speed or RPM for any length of time.

Avoid the use of the cruise control.

here is a page to read (post#2 in particular)

here is another

Once the engine is warm don't be afraid to wind it out every so often.

Good Luck,

This dealership is about 3/4 mile west of the SN Brewery and 7 blocks south of Peet's Coffee; several nice places to hang out if you need some work done on your Veedub. Also Bidwell Park is a great place to walk/run/bike if you want to work out.

When your wife calls you on the cell as she's driving to the hospital, 80-85 is going to seem really slow :D I had the identical problem with the Audi 90Q20v I picked up in Texas in August. I had the good fortune of a friend in San Antonio who agreed to pick the car up in Austin and hold it for me until I could come down.;)

Cancelled our order

Well, after our deposit was laid down 10 months ago for a white JSW, auto, nav, nothing more nor less, we heard from VW exec offices - you will never get nav unless you order EVERY overpriced option we offer.

Sorry VWNA, we got our money back from the dealer and moved on. No wonder your stock is inflated by Porsche. We won’t be buying your product with such a sour corporate experience - ever.

C'mon the car is important but put it off until a week AFTER the birth. Unless you are the type that's planning on having a dozen children, then the birth of one may not be quite as significant.

valet key, block heater

After two OT posts here's something with Q's -

What does the valet key NOT do? Open the glove compartment?

My daughter loses keys like my dog loses hair, I'm thinking of keeping several valet keys on hand.

What about block heaters? I travel to places where Celsius and Fahrenheit meet. Couldn't imagine a gasser w/o a block heater, much less a diesel. Any recommendations?

Wow! There it is! Awesome. If that didn't have a sunroof I would be thinking they might be calling me. I'm going over to Maund tomorrow to order my door moulding.
I also went to Grapevine Market and got a Stone Ruination IPA last Tuesday, by the way. It has the price and kick of about 4 beers. Whoo!

Newbury - you're right it's definitely latch and I'm sure you aren't losing much by not being able to access it! You just need to find a nice place to hide the key!

However, since we are talking JSW - what trunk? Losing the capability to opening the rear door/hatch is minor.
Especially considering there's a hatch release on the driver's door.

'09 jsw tdi, laser blue, manual 6 speed - sold back to vw 12/7/2016
I can't believe it, the exact car I ordered in June is finally here! Laser blue w/ art gray interior manual JSW w/ rear side air bags, protection kit and nothing else! Got it for MSRP. No "tru-coat", no "just because" fees, though they did have a "processing fee", aka doc fee of $279. I had an unbelievably pleasant experience with Hallmark VW in Madison, TN. James McCollum and Linda Vaughan treated me quite well and held my hand through my first experience purchasing a new car. This is actually my first time going into debt for a car, period. Scary stuff.

My only partial regret is that I might have liked the pano roof after all. But hey, I can live without it, and this was one very reasonably priced car. I'm very happy I held out for one with a stick shift, though I have to admit I killed the thing a few times before I got it home :) It's been a few years since I've driven a stick, and almost 10 years since I've actually owned one.

I agree with NB, my car was ready to pick up 2 days after my 2nd Son's birth and Both were earlier than expected. I'll have to wait until the 24th of Nov to get my car, so my son will be a month old. And while he is my 2nd, we don't plan to have anymore, but I DO want to have sex with my wife AGAIN :D . So I thought it prudent to wait.
My salesman did not give me either option to have it driven or picked-up, so I have a ~2000 mile trip over Thanksgiving ahead of me.
Had I picked it up earlier than I would not be tempted by the Tucson Chapman dealer to keep my original order.
I know there is some saying about patience being blah, blah, blah, but after reading this forum for many months, I could not contain myself.

Glad to here you got your car back to ABQ safe and sound JVance.

Jvance, Can you lock the hatch release like you can with the sedan? Not to drag this out, but assuming you had something large in the back, it would be nice to know that you can or cannot unlock the hatch with the valet key.
