Sorry to dredge up a much talked about topic again, but I just need some clarification on the fog light issue. As stated in my previous post of a quote around $558 for those to be installed by the dealer. Also saw a post claiming $799. And other posts stating that these fog lights "need/should" be integrated with a fancy switch and with the on-board computer. Now being a Jeep guy I've installed a few fog lights and most of the time I just bolted on a bumper routed some wire, cut a hole, installed a switch and BAM your done. Am I missing something with this jetta, even getting the ones that fit exactly in the right spot (I've seen $350 posted somewhere) is it more complicated than running some wire to a switch. Finally, am I to assume "integrated" means the "right" switch (euro?) and computer interface. So, from what I've seen posted before $558 might not be a bad price for fogs

Thanks

DD

Thanks for dredging up. I am looking into fog light too and curious. I heard there was a panel for the front bumper that had the fog light "holes" in it...but the dealership didn't know about it. Another guy at the dealership said there was a website that sold VW parts for the Euro cars which would be the switch that looks like the headlight switch but when your headlights are on you can pull it out and it turns the fog lights on. When I get the link I will post it...unless someone else already has the info.

Not a problem.
The fog light option with VW integrates the lights in the outer lower grills so the original grills are replaced. If the fogs are installed at the port (which I am now assuming they can be) it looks to be 558. If the dealer does it the cost is much higher. The dealer price on the lights is more than the 330. which is the price on the VW website. I believe that kit includes the grills with the fog light opening. You then need to replace the regular headlight light switch with the proper factory light switch that pulls out (usually around 100. give or take) and then they charge labor which is about 2 1/2 hours and then there is also a relay. So the cost at the dealer is a big number. $558. is a great price. I paid way more than that to have the dealer install the lights.
I would not recommend you do this job yourself unless you are very familiar with VW and their electrics.

Word. (Shamelessly quoting http://forums.tdiclub.com/showpost.php?p=2336880&postcount=5548)

Trust me, I'd be out of there ASAP, and word would spread far and wide about such BS. The GM/owner of the dealship would surely be getting an earful that's not fit to print in these forums. Hell, depending on how bad the salesman went after my wife, I'd seriously consider renting a highway/close-by billboard to quote/discredit them (only with actual quotes, of course) for such agregious antics (even if it was just one over-the-top sales guy).

But similarly to jvance, I guess that's just how I am, particularly when/if it's my wife that's on the receiving end.

Jetta Wagon available

If anyone is interested, I was at DeMontrond VW in Houston (I-45N) today and test drove a 6 speed Jetta TDI (Nice!). On the lot is an unaccounted for 2009 JSW Dark Gray (not sure of the exact color name here) Anthracite Gray leatherette, pano roof, 17" wheels, I-Pod adapter, Monster mats, 6 speed standard with 184 miles on it.

I was told I could have it for MSRP + options. That price with those options is $26,189.00. So, for a few bucks more, it's yours.

Call Matt in sales if you are interested.

I am going to wait for a white one.

To add:

The dealer install (2 hours labor x 100) of the whole OEM foglight kit (lower bumper grill with chrome eyebrow accents, lights, wiring harness with relay) plus a "Euro" headlight switch would be $700 plus tax. You can buy the kit from the parts department--this is kit 1KM052250U as advertised on vw.com for $377 through your dealer. The kit has a built-in relay so you can hook it up directly to your headlight switch, bypassing your existing midline central electronics control module. It doesn't come with a fogs-ready headlight switch, so you would have to buy the headlight switch separately. The switch swaps out with your stock headlight switch:

You can do the labor yourself but my understanding is you'll need VCDS/VAG-COM to enable the lights after the install which is one reason I had the dealer do it (that and not wanting to void my warranty). Someone posted the PDF of the kit install instructions in one of these threads. The install is basically to replace the stock lower bumper grills, install the lights, route the wires to the firewall into the driver footwell, hook up them up into the new headlight switch, then enable the fogs through VCDS. To route the wires you'll need to remove the air filter box and battery.

Because this setup uses a relay rather than uses the CECM to control the lights, there is no "bulb out" indicator if one of the lamps or fuse burns out. To gain that function, you need the better highline CECM which will cost anywhere from $250-$300. However, the old projector kit for the highline CECM can be bought at oemplus or one of the other etailers for $300 or less if on sale, so it's cheaper than the new one. You can also buy the old kit and hook up a relay to it (since it doesn't come with one) and use it with a stock 09 midline CECM.

Keep in mind, if you also plan on doing an HID upgrade from the stock halogen headlights, you will need the highline CECM anyway.

I had my dealer install my foglights (I bought mine off the lot) but caught a discount on the labor so it was about $600 plus I kept my old parts.

VW dealers bating 1000. Costumers 1. My dealer (Rusty Wallace, Garland,Tx) from whom I have bought an 02 Beetle tdi & a 05 Passat tdi wants me to put down a $? deposit and a $1,000 over MSRP for a Jetta Sportwagon. They said some of the other VW dealers in the Dallas area were charging as much a $5,000 over MSRP. I'm sorry, I'll get a Prius before I let those let them sell me anything.

On the fog lights, why would I be quoted ~$558, are they that cheap? Or not installing the right parts (switch, ights, etc). I guess I need to inquire some more. Since the car arrived last week and I have 2+ weeks yet before I pic it up.

That is a good deal. Perhaps your dealer is giving you a discount? Been known to happen. $377 for the relay-kit minus a headlight switch is the retail price, otherwise the configure-a-new-car applet says $330 for what I assume would be a port install option. Or it might also be a difference in labor cost. I did some asking before I bought my car and was told by 3 different dealers it was a two-hour install. When I had mine done I waited for it and it was 1:55. I'd just check and confirm your quote includes labor and the Euro switch.

Jim, just shop around a bit, wait a bit, or travel. Sportwagens can be had at MSRP all over the place and for more in a few places. I've got three dealers within an hour of each other that are from $250 below MSRP to $2500 over. Besides, I thought the vinyl seats were a dealbreaker for you, or do you just like complaining?

Really bummed to see this thread grind to a halt like it has. Undoubtedly it's because it lost visibility since being moved, but I guess it was time.

I want more!

Point 1) Don't trust a dealer regarding what other dealers are charging. It's in his interest to keep you from calling around.

Point 2) You're lucky to be within reasonable driving distance of good dealers in Austin, San Antonio and Houston. Rod East San Antonio is selling at MSRP. I would HIGHLY recommend them.

Gotta Getta Jetta!

Sitting in my garage is a black-as-my-soul 09 Jetta TDI Sportwagen, covered in bug juice, 732 miles on it. My butt is barely sore.

The transaction didn't go off without a hitch, but everyone worked to smooth things out. My CU didn't get the wire transfer out the door in time for the credit to show up at the dealer's bank, so we had to draw up an option contract, and there were several people ahead of me for the financing department to deal with. After working out the VW financing, I said, "couldn't we just put the car on my credit cards? I have two cards with $23,000 limit on each." He stared at me for a second and then said "Yeah, sure, that would be much easier." So I bought my car with credit cards :D When the wire transfer hits on Monday they'll credit the transactions.

The bad:

No fold flat passenger seat :(

No latest generation Nano adapter thingie for the Ipod Adapter. However, the Nano's so light it just sticks on the connector and stands up by itself.

The Ipod adapter doesn't appear to power the Ipod. The music died somewhere between Tatum and Roswell.

I dumped the clutch twice

Driving through Texas zzzzzzz.

The good:

More power than I remember with the DSG sedan. Holy heck it gets up and goes from 70 to 80. It reminds me alot of my old MX-6 GT.

Once you figure out that you can't let the engine drop below 800 rpms, the clutch is like butter. Smooth engagement, precise shifting. Just the slightest throttle on launch to keep the engine at about 1000 rpms

My ass isn't sore.

The compass was already set up.

To my cloth ears the stereo sounds just fine. I don't want more power because I'm in my 40s and I want to keep my hearing into my 80s.

That sunroof. Oh. My. God.

Sirius Radio has an all AC/DC channel :D

The anthracite interior is beautiful. Not too dark at all.

Demetrius (my salesman) is a cool guy.

First tank by fillup and phone calculator was 38mpg. That's a throwaway because I don't know how many miles were on it when it was topped off or if they topped it off to the neck like I filled it. Second tank to the house shows 40.2 mpg on the MFD including going through a 7500 foot pass. I ran the engine at WOT in 5th and 6th gear from 60 to 80 mph several times every thirty minutes, and pulled over every so often to drive the car at WOT from a standstill back up to 75, so that probably had some effect on the mileage.

Overall it's all the car I expected it to be.

Congratulations. Glad your trip worked out well. I too noticed that you can sit in the JSW a good long time with very little fatigue and never a sore bottom. My initial mileage mirrors yours and I know that the wife never babies this car when she drives it.
I am glad that after all you have gone through you finally have a car.

Thanks guys. I don't intend to get in a hurry. My Passat only has 80,000 and still runs like a top. I don't intend on getting gouged and I'm SURE the jerks at my dealership will not get a bid. There are five VW dealers within 150 miles and another 4 or 5 within 200.

City Mileage

First little trip with the family through the east side of the city and up to Juan Tabo Picnic Grounds. Better than 1000 ft of climbing, about 25 miles. MFD showed 37.5 mpg for the trip.

I also discovered that I have a dragging brake shoe on my right rear wheel - the rim is hot after the drive and smells of burning brake. The left rear rim is cool to the touch. I guess I'm going to get that special dealership experience later this week.

EDIT re: dragging brake shoe - ESC?

JSW in snow and ice?

Has anyone had a chance to drive his or her JSW in the snow and ice yet? If so, how did it perform? Do you think front wheel drive and ESP with ASR is sufficient for these conditions?

My wife and I are debating between getting a JSW TDI or a 4WD Ford Hybrid Escape. They are different cars, but we want a fuel-efficient vehicle with space for stuff. One of the main concerns my wife has about the JSW is the lack of 4WD because we like to ski and head to the mountains several times a year, plus we might move back to New England someday.

With similar options (moon roof & nav) the Escape is about $5,000 more, but with the Ford we would get:
- 4WD
- dual zone air
- multi function steering wheel
- 5 yr warranty?
- better(?) cabin tech: nav/Bluetooth = Ford sync

However the JSW would be:
- more fun to drive
- better fuel economy (40mpg vs 30mpg) – although diesel is about 60
cents more than RUG around here.
- Nicer interior – fit and finish.
- Heated seats
- Something I have been waiting 2 years for

Thoughts and comments? ….

As they told my dad when he was stationed in Thule Greenland, 4-wheel drive just gets you in trouble further from the road. I'd much rather have 2 wheel drive and a good set of cables, because that improves your ability to go AND stop and turn.

Having an 04 TDI Jetta Wagon in Montana, I can tell you it's smooth sailing. I've got a good set of snows, but never had any issues except on pure ice. Go for the JSW!!!

We had an '06 TDI which we shod with Hakkapellitta snows and it handled the New England winter with aplomb. My wife and I have been teaching at winter driving schools for many years in the White Mountains and our other cars are Quattros. I wouldn't hesitate to drive the Jetta in the most adverse conditions. AWD is great for starting out and climbing, after that it's all just about the same, except AWD can be more of a challenge to drive when and if you do actually "lose it" and are playing with a car giving varying amounts of power to whatever wheel it decides (TIP: recover mostly as you would with FWD and judicious use of the throttle while still steering in the general direction of the skid and keeping your head up and your eyes fixed on where you WANT to go as opposed to where you're actually going). Get the JSW and some good dedicated snows like Hakkas or Gislaveds. If "Plonker" can get to Big Mountain, you can get to the Cascades, or the Mount Washington Valley in due time.

vance. really thrilled to read your thread and see that your patiences has paid off. these cars are truly worth the wait! glad to hear that after this long wait and a 700 mile + trip you are still thrilled. your comments on the roof was well said. i was traveling home late last night from the NC mountains. it was a cold clear night on a quite country road with no traffic. i kept the car cool and rolled the seated heats to 3 and let the car move me through these rolling twisting roads. the moon was big and bright and stars everywhere and the coolest thing was as i am looking down the road i could still see it all above me without diverting my eyes from the road. it was a total driving experience and with that panoroof it was close to a religious experience. once again vance congrats and enjoy!

I traded my 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid for a JSW TDI DSG, so I'll chime in. I bought the FEH in March of '07 and did the swap for the JSW in mid-October '08.

You're basically right on about the differences. What I miss about the Escape:

4WD, steering wheel controls, full auto climate control, auto headlamps w/fog lights, quiet ride with zero wind noise, SUV view out, SUV ground clearance, relatively comfy back seat, engine-off at stops, 30-32 MPG on regular, rear glass opens separate from hatch, choice of leather or cloth, awesome center console, audiophile sound (no longer available in '09), easy entry & exit, bullet proof reliability & warranty

Here's what I'm glad to have with the Jetta that the Escape did not have:

Fun to drive, diesels are the only vehicles with more torque than a hybrid, rear seat vents, more useful cargo area, low height means it's much easier to get bikes on/off the roof rack, adding the 17" wheels makes it the smart guy's A4 Avant, VW group interiors are so nice these days.

Here in Colorado, you really only "NEED" 4wd a few days each year. It's usually only necessary for getting moving or out of messy parking lots in very slippery conditions. Once you're on main roads, FWD + traction control is rarely much of a disadvantage. The rest of the year you're hauling around a lot of weight you really don't need. Also, the 4WD system in the Escape is pretty squirrely. It uses a rear diff clutch and engages in a non-progressive way, so it's prone to go suddenly tail-out in icy corners. I got used to it but it was a bit scary the first few times it occurred. I've had several Subarus, and the Escape's handling on ice is downright primitive in comparison.

I paid about $28200 for the Escape (retail was $30900) and collected about $5500 in federal & state tax credits, and traded it for $23K. So I did pretty well on it. But now the same Escape (loaded w/everything but nav) costs $32000 or more and it's hard to get much of a discount. The JSW, at $25989 MSRP was a somewhat better deal IMO.

It boils down to: I'm really glad to be back in a car with good handling.

Great idea qship. Here is my contribution:

Cargo area retractable cover: 1K9867871B-45W
($370 list) Not yet available at US dealers, but Damian at TM Tuning was able to get it shipped to me from Germany for less than dealer list.
(Thanks go to pugman for the suggestion that I go overseas for that part)

Did you buy this? I'm wondering what it looks like and how it holds up. The brushed aluminum looks like overkill and is a little difficult to order.

As someone else suggested, I think the best solution is a textured rubber product.
