I asked about the barrier at the dealer when I purchased my car, and it was over $300 and needed to be ordered. I picked up my JSW right before Labor Day and needed to tarvel with the dogs that weekend, so I went to Petco, and for about $80, got the Precision® Universal Vehicle Pet Barrier, and it works incredibly well. I was worried because it said it was for SUV's and had asome bad reviews about fitment, but I was able to install it in a few minutes and it's worked wonders with my 2, 50# lab mixes. I can post some pictures tomorrow if you'd like, but I can't imageine paying $300+ from the dealer after using this one for the past 3000+ miles.

I believe this is the same one on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Precision-Pet-ProConcepts-Vehicle-Universal/dp/B00028J1OG
I've had one of these for years, has worked like a charm in all of our wagons.

I have been reading this thread for since it started and have held off adding anything till now . August 21st I stopped by my local VW dealer to see the sportwagen, when a salesman ask if he could sell it to me I told him no I was waiting to get a TDI. He says we have one right over there, it came in today would you like to drive it. So off we went and I bought the car for MRSP, they gave me a good deal on trade in. Life was good. They prepped the car and filled it with fuel and off I went one happy camper. I stopped for lunch, came out and the car did not want to start. when it did start it ran OK. Went to work, shut the car off and restarted it no problem. 10 minutes later it would not start. Heat related? Later when it was cold it started right up but detonated badly on acceleration ? Gas in the fuel was my thought. I took it right back to the dealer, they gave me a loaner and said they would get right on it. Four days later a message saying everything was good but they were going to clean out the fuel tank to be sure. I called back and ask if everything is OK why are you draining the fuel ? Answed was it had a smell. What kind of smell ? answer GASOLINE ! I then told them well if it is gas you put it there and I don't want the car. Answer was the tech had checked the car and it was OK. I ask if he had taken the engine out and disasembled it to check for damage. Answer no he is a tech and did not need to do that. So I told them I would not accept the car and to get me a new one. So for the last 7 weeks I have put 3500 miles on their gasser using a few tanks of their gas and today I recieved my new silver sportwagen TDI. Life is good again. So now I am happy to say I am a member of the TDI community

Dog restraints

For those who don't want or can't put their dogs all the way in the back (or if you're like me and you have two that can't be too close to each other), a harness designed for the car works pretty well. A harness also helps to prevent escapees when you open the door.

There are a lot of different ones out there, but these seemed to fit the greyhounds the best. They are also heavy duty and I feel confident they'd hold up in a crash:

Quite frankly, dogs should always be in one of these harnesses no matter where they are riding in the car. Q: What could be worse than having your dog die in a car accident? A: Being killed or seriously hurt by a 40plus lb. animal as it flies through the air at attonishing speed in the event of a crash. Gruesome to think about perhaps but here's one sample of what folks might consider: http://www.petsafetybelts.com/#safety

If I may ask, how well do you think that that pet barrier would be at holding cargo back?

Thanks!

I guess I'll be looking into the factory cargo partition since it's bolted in place. We frequently transport shelter dogs in the back of our car, which would mean buying several different sizes of harnesses and adjusting them each time they were used.

It would slow it down... or could stop it....

In the cars I use it in the rear seat goes roughly half-way up the barrier. In the even of an accident the barrier will give way on the top half as it's only held by perhaps 10-20lbs of pressure against the headliner (not great for the headliner by the way, but we keep most of our cars until they're dead, so no big deal for me). It's likely that large cargo would probably be trapped or tangled in the barrier even after it broke "loose" in an accident, but you certainly couldn't count on it.

When we had our '06 Jetta and only 1 child we would put the 40% side of the fold down seat down and put the dog in the trunk just allowing him enough leash to get his head and some shoulder into the car. The leash and harness would be attached to the tie downs in the trunk with a REAL climbing carribiner (sp?). I always wondered what the neighbors would think when I put the dog in the trunk but after a few miles our shepard would usually go back into the trunk. He liked it better than our wagons which I'm guessing make him feel much more "exposed" because of all the glass. The trunk provided something all dogs like when they might feel anxious, the security of a den.

Picked up my Platinum/Art Grey /DSG/with 19" Audi wheels, mats, mud flaps, and dealer installed rub strips on Fri evening. I foolishly thought all the sportwagens would be built the same! After driving 1200 miles to get it I should have had the dealer point out the features before I put down the $$$. I do not appear to have the compass in the display, I also do not appear to have tire pressure monitoring?
I knew I probably wasn't going to get the fold flat front seat feature.....which I think is stupid for them not to have but I'm really bummed about the compass! Anyone know if there is a secret trick to getting this to turn on?

Congrats!! :D

I think the displays are all the same, but yes you can turn things on and off. Hold down the bottom button on the end of the windshield wiper stalk (not the button on the bottom of the stalk) and the menu should come up.

We also didn't ask the dealer point out all the stuff on the car, thinking it would be like our other VWs. Plenty of differences, though!

I'm pretty sure it's a legal requirement for cars to include a tire pressure monitor on 2008+ models.

I think you're right, but if George Costanza used to work for you I'm going to have to check my facts.....

I think the "monitoring system" is actually just a warning light that will turn on if your pressure is low. I don't think there's any display that you can see what the pressure is (if that's what you're looking for...).

Check the manual to confirm, but I think that's how it works.

As always you guys are correct.....tire pressure monitoring is in the speedo display not the MFD like I thought. Still can't find the compass in the the MFD though....that is irksome!!!

It's carabiner, or biner (pronounced "bean-er") for short.

Thanks, everybody, for the doggie detention info. Mine don't spend a lot of time in the car, but I've long known that I was being irresponsible - on both counts, as Q points out.

Incidentally, any prospective climbing partners out there in the northern New England area. I'm always looking...

The VW cargo partition for the A4 wagon will restrain objects in a crash. That's the whole point.

Yeah, I got it. (I've survived a number of artillery/mortar barrages, and prefer not to subject myself or my passengers to incoming objects, four-legged or otherwise.)

So I was told by my dealer (Manchester VW) that 2 SportWagens should be available this week... They will both be BASE MODELS. IE Manual transmissions (which I want), but NOTHING ELSE! I have had my heart set on that pano-roof for a while now... Is it really worth waiting forever or is there another way? Should I just take the cars as they are?

If it's a feature you really want and don't have to have the car RIGHT now, wait a while. The next batch may have the vehicle you want. Or see if the dealer is willing to try a dealer trade to get the vehicle/options you want.

I would recommend holding out for what you truly want. I know I would have regretted it if I had settled and I've had to remind myself of that a number of times. The potential of finally just landing one momentarily distracted me a couple of times but I came to the conclusion that if I'm going to purchase a new car, and one I've waited for for 8 months already, I want it to have the features that I've had my heart set on. There should be no reason why you can't get what you want - it may just require a bigger net or a little more time. If your local dealer isn't getting what you are looking for, start searching elsewhere.

I Hate Vw :)

Finally got through to the dealer (Prime VW in Saco, Maine), and looks like our car has been picked up by the factory from the ORDER BANK!!

However, ETA is now the week of 1.29.09, so I will get it next year. It doesn't have a VIN yet, but it should happen soon.

Why don't they just make more? I was hoping for 08 delivery, but next year? Might as well wait for the the Outback Diesel or TSX Diesel...

The sunroof is awesome, so I say wait or start searching on your own if it's a feature you think you want. I compromised on color to get my car sooner but I'm OK with that. I wish I could have gotten the navigation system, but that wasn't a dealbreaker either.
Good luck!

I compromised on color as well but that is all. It had every option I wanted. I'd wait for the pano. Funny though, the color I wanted was the one you (TDIGirl) settled on. How do you like it now? What color did you want?

I agree that you should wait. I have turned down two cars so far because they were not one of the colors I wanted. I know of a possible silver car and possible red car both manuals with sunroof coming into the Boston area if you are interested. I have turned them both down since I want a Laser Blue car or possibly a Grey car.

My first car (an 89 Diesel Jetta) had no sunroof and I wanted to cut a hole in it the whole time I owned it, until I bought my Passat. I would get what you want so you don't regret it later.
