Hello, I'm new here and am looking to know more about problems I'm experiencing with my 2013 VW Golf TDI.

I ran a diagnostic test on it and the codes P0401 and P2002 showed up. I know they have something to do with the emissions. Is there a cheap way to fix this? And will the engine be damaged if I continue to drive?

Also, what kind of oil does the car need during an oil change?

Thank you in advance!

There is no cheap way to fix this. It either has to be fixed correctly by replacing the parts needed which would be the DPF and or the EGR system. Or a total delete. Either way is going to cost a fair amount of money. There are many threads here. You can read about these two codes. The DPF is cracked and is leaking soot around taking out the EGR. Only way to fix it properly is to replace everything needed and or delete everything and tune.

First off welcome !
Did you buy this car privately or from the dealer?
reason I ask is if from dealer it might , I repeat it might still be under warranty for the emissions.
I dont know the web sit ….someone here will list it . You enter your vin number and it will tell you what’s been done and when the warranty expires……otherwise it’s costly to replace or as stated above your looking at a delete with a tune to prevent a CEL.

Hi! I bought it from a used car dealer around 2 weeks ago. They did something with it and the light turned off for a short while, but came back on.

If I were to delete and tune it, would that harm the engine in the long run and would that be the cheaper option? A repair place said the DPF part would cost around $3000 to replace.

It won't harm the engine, but it might not be cheaper right away. It might cost the same as changing the DPF, but you will do it once.

Your bio shows you're from Texas. Whereabouts in Texas? If you delete, it won't harm the engine and as a matter of fact, will probably be better for it. If you were going to keep it for the long-term, delete would probably be the cheaper choice. I am in Round Rock and have the vcds tool if you ever need it.

You might have recourse with the uses car dealership, did they give you any kind of warranty ?
At a minimum I would think for thirty days. If you got that route document it with them on what the issue is , what they did etc…..

If you have any plans on a delete I would get on the ball and get my parts and tune in my hands. Seems places are starting to stop and or close down. Raw tek, one of the suppliers of parts doesn't ship to the US anymore. Just checked their website. Tunes may be going the same way. If you think you may be going this way I would hurry.

Yea, previously purchased a 2013 68k miles golf from a known dealership. Told me they couldn't release release my vehicle after emissions test/ vehicle inspection. But took my down payment drove hour half to test drive. They knew that to.

Anyways month later, begining of September told me I could go pick it up. 5 min from dealership engine light goes on.
EGR valve needed to be clean, did that
Fuel filter, could be another issue. Way to easy to do. On my golf TDI.
Replaced MAF sensor.

After all that decided to take it to a euro shop, to have diagnostic done.
Told me they fairly sure either needs a Regen or DPF replacement.
So they did the Regen. Engine light still on.

Before next recommendation.

Vehicle was having such a bad acceleration response especially from a red light. I have been able to tell the difference. Night and day. Though after doing the EGR valve, car started to stutter when easing into gas from around 4-6th. Automatic at like 2,000rpms. Almost like running out of gas. This main reason decided to take it into the euro shop.

Anyways, know the shop told me it cleared the Regen. Took another that whole next day for them to respond.

Needing to replace the EGR cooler. Didn't have the 2,700 week and half ago.

Now since the EGR cooler OEM part on sale. Might just suck it up, and do it myself. For imma is the money for a automotive car creeper. Any recommendations on car creeper. Think this might actually fix engine light issue. EGR cooler. Also I've added some gas additves actually did help for a week then went back on. Tried two different types.

That sounds really similar to the problem I was dealing with. A few weeks ago I finally took my golf to a euro mechanic and the light is gone now. It was indeed costly, about $5000, which sucked, but at least it's running perfectly fine now!

Ok.......Reality Check.

The way I,m reading this is the O.P. buys a 2013 Golf from a used car dealer that had cleared the D.T.C.'s

A short time later the check engine light re-appears and he takes it back to them and they cleared it again but it came back again.

Then he spends another $5,000.00 to fix the problem it had when he bought it and now he is happy?

I,m thinking that when owners of these cars are encountering emissions conundrums now that their extended warranty's have expired they are trading them in and they are hitting the auto auctions dirt cheap. Hence all the ads on CL and FBM.

Methinks I need to go to the dealers auto auction to find an off-road vehicle.

Yea, I mean I got my Golf TDI for a fair price. Granted, I already knew these issues but didn't care. That the trunk hatch didnt open from outsde, or with key fob button. Along with water leaking thru into tail lights. Dealership tried to act like nothing wrong.

I expected the car needed some engine fixes. For 67k miles after 11 years. To me expected carbon build up unless previous owners took care of vehicle. Expected they didn't. My ultimate decision was, low miles, engine sounds good. And diesel can last at least 300k miles.

Though dealership, should been more on the line. But I didn't know all the regulations and rules. At least they had replace on them the oil tank? Anyways it was apperently cracked.

Yea, might be so. But theirs a higher chance of a VW diseal engine at 400k-500k miles. 500k+ miles if taken care of..

There are just too many to list....
Nah. I see all kinds of cars and (mostly) trucks with that kind of mileage every day. And the CR TDIs, most give up on them long before they get to that level. Plus, statistics are in the favor of other cars anyway. Toyota has sold over a 1/4 million Camrys in the US so far this year. The Jetta only sold about 53k, and that's Volkswagen's highest selling model here. Of course, there haven't been any diesel Volkswagen sold here since 2015, and if you want to get into rarity.... :p

It takes a lot to actually drive any car that much. I speak from experience. Most people just won't ever get there.
