Just got the VW Emissions Recall/Modification Notification letter today. A six-page letter detailing the modification, procedures, warranties, along with a booklet, "Important Information About Your 2015 2.0L TDI Volkswagen Generation 3 Engine," which details:

overview
software and hardware updates
changes in maintenance schedule
emission limits
extended emissions warranty coverage
customer notices

11 years or 162,000 miles or 5 years or 60,000 miles from date of phase 1, then 5 years or 60,000 miles after phase 2 (sometime in 2018)

covered parts are entire exhaust after treatment system, entire fuel system, the egr system, the turbocharger, and on-board diagnostic system; also, the engine sub-assembly, consisting of the assembled block, crankshaft, cylinder header, camshaft, and valve train

we have our offer letter, so we're going to get the notarization and send it in... will update later on...

Congrats...I have been paused on the page where you pick modifications or fix....
The fix and warrenty sounds great...But the numbers on turning in the car look good too....
Still weighing the possibilities....
Getting rid of 3 years wear and getting a new car, or getting enough cash back to get a car one year older, no loan are distinct possibilities....Each with pluses and minuses.
The one thing I keep on wondering....Is after the buy-back is done, will there be a market for there cars...
I would hate to have a minor accident and have the car totaled post diselgate cause the values are so low...And can we trust VW . Guess its why I am still waiting...Want to hear about the software changes...
Figure my 40,000 won't be due till summer...Then tires before next winter by looking at treadwear.... Thinking I loose nothing in waiting a bit...
Figure life changes...And when I need to spend $$, I will make the choice that makes the most sense then, with a bit more information.

I have a 2011. I'm opting for the emissions modification. I was planning on keeping the car anyway, so the settlement is basically free money to me. Even if they offered me a brand new gasser I wouldn't take it. Can't see my decision being any different if I had a 2015. Playing musical cars to try and wring ever last dollar out of VW just seems like more stress than it's worth. Yes the cars have lost value, but even if I were to total it I'm still ahead of the game than I would have been if I totaled it pre-scandal. I'm hoping my older engine will get by with just a software fix so I can re-flash after all my warranties expire.

I got the emissions recall letter/booklet before submitting the scanned, signed, offer letter. I think anyone with an affected vehicle will get one whether or not they initiated a claim. They make some reference to the downside of getting the recall fix without having done the claim paperwork.

So far I've heard from one person who's had the first stage of the fix applied to their 2015. So far has resulted in a noticeable increase in engine noise (I think largely at idle) and a small increase in fuel economy. First trip with the car netted a 2 MPG improvement.

Time will tell if it continues to average that much higher on their average commute.

I'm pretty much thinking the way you are for my 2015 GSW. Already did the buyback for my 2012 and replaced it with a 2017 Golf TSI. I think the fix offer is very good but I have concerns about the amount of components swapped in at Stage 2 and how the thing will run after that. Even though the warranty is great, I just don't want to spend time dealing with it if things don't work. So committing to Stage 1 is not automatic. Getting good mpg on the new gasser, so I may do the same with a GSW, avoiding new tires and 40k service this summer. By then, there may be enough info on Stage 1 and timing of Stage 2 to pull, the trigger.

HOLA SENOR jjm,

Am sure interested in the 1.8 Golf Wagon. Sure be interested in your highway MPG as it improves over break-in.

best, ez

EZ,

Just to clarify, my wagon is a 2015 Diesel, purchased a month before dieselgate. So I've had it 1-1/2yrs, 33k miles. Hwy 48-50mpg; overall 44mpg.

I replaced a 2012 Golf TDI with a 2017 Golf 1.8 TSI. So far (2000 miles), getting 38-39 mpg hwy, 34mpg overall).

Thank you. The 1.8 is capable of low 40's when broken in - - - per reports both on this site and VW Vortex.

I have a 2010 Passat gasser 2.0T and I am getting average 34 in this colder weather. When I bought it it was still pretty warm here in Nebraska and I was getting 36-38 mpg. The good thing about the 2010 2.0T is I don't have to worry about the timing belt change, it has a chain.

Yes, so now I am debating whether to sell back the GSW TDI and switch to a GSW TSI, or do the Fix on the TDI. Economics say do the Fix, but the Stage 2 adds some uncertainty regarding reliability, to me. I have not seen many 2017 GSW's with the SE trim either, so cost is still vague.

we looked at the SE trim and decided (down here in the near Tropics) that a sun/moon roof and the extra cost wasn't a good idea - we did like the upgraded lumbar support, but then had a pleasant discovery that the S trim seats *also* had adjustable lumber support!

we really like our TDI wagen and never even considered a buyback - reports on the reflash/mod are coming back all good and the 11 yr/160,000 mile warranty looks even better - there's no way we could ever afford a diesel wagen at twice the cost... our wagen will have cost $18,500 new!

good luck with whatever you decide - i know it's not easy for some folks...

we get 'reflashed' in two days...
