The transmission on my Jetta died.
I knew better than dealing with a salvage yard 01M so I thought it would be best to buy factory rebuilt 01M directly from VW.
That's what I did, I bought the transmission from a local dealership and had HermTDI do the install.

Everything went well ...for a while.
The end result was a bogus rebuild.
I went back to Herm and had him check things out. The transmission oil sump pan was removed. What was found was enough to make me spit blood. The oil sump was painted (no primer). Under normal driving conditions the warm oil washed away most of the black paint and what was remaining was just loose and blistered paint that you can brush off with the slightest finger tip pressure.

The paint that has come off of the inside of the oil sump is all over the valve body, the filter and it is also inside the torque converter assembly.

I paid a considerable amount of money for the transmission and I got taken by the very people that I had some faith in providing a reliable product.

Their side of the story...."Sorry about your inconvenience" but your out of the warranty". Beside you have driven the car 14,000 miles.

Wow I heard that most of the 01M's you get from the dealer are actually new.

VW hasn't sold "new" 01m transmissions in over 7 years (or so I'v e been told by three VW dealerships). All 01m's sold at VW dealerships are rebuilt units. Who is the "rebuilder" they are not or will not tell me.

In my opinion, there really isn't anything to complain about here.

The OP doesn't state that he had any mechanical issues with the transmission. Just stating the he dropped the pan for an inspection. Upon doing so, he noticed that the sump had been painted and was rubbing off.

Chances are, it was painted to prevent rust from sitting dry. ATF is a detergent. To see it eating away paint after a few heat cycles is common. The filter is going to catch and small particles anyways. But chances are, it won't hurt it regardless. After 14k miles, wether you inspected it or not, the paint wearing away would've continued before and after.

I see no gripe here.

sledDawg2 said "Everything went well ...for a while." I take this to mean that this changed at some point. In this case at 14k. Very large gripe seen by this reader. He did not purchase the rebuilt 01M from the guy behind "Jack's Bait Shop" but from a dealer.

01M's time has passed

> I knew better than dealing with a salvage yard 01M ...

If someone with a dead 01M has a salvage yard available, it might make a lot more sense to find a hulk with a 5-speed, and do a stick swap. When our 2nd 01M bites the dust, we plan to do a swap (unless VW has a new TDI on the market that is safe to buy, which they haven't in the US for some 7 years now).

> so I thought it would be best to buy factory rebuilt 01M directly from VW.

We did that, at 253K. We considered a stick swap, but have no local salvage yards with reasonable selections of VWs, and the regional swap expert wasn't offering a complete solution at the time. Dealers, of course, don't even do stick swaps - indeed, they had no idea what I was talking about when I inquired.

The replacement 01M is now at 97,000 more miles, and still performing about as well as 01M's ever do.

For anyone facing this situation, it appears that the standard VW dealer warranty on an 01M replacement is 12,000 miles or 12 months. It's a fairly substantial bet. We blew through 12K in 6 months.
