Rear Shocks

I need to replace the rear shocks on my 96 Passat and don't want to spend the $150 for the Bentley Manual. Can anybody tell me how to gain access to the top of the shocks? It looks like you have to get under the rear shelf from inside the car. On the old Jettas and Rabbits you could get to the top of the shock from inside the trunk. Not the Passats.
