Can someone please adequately describe how this works or have a video showing how it works in the A3 Progressiv? Does it show the distance in the MMI or is it just sound?

I don't know if it's different on the new ones but on my 2013 it just beeps and beeps faster as you get closer to an object behind you. When you get to about a food away the noise turns solid.

Seems to work well and I haven't accidentally backed into anything yet.

My 2012 has intermittent beep and becomes solid beep once you're close to object. Totally useless now that I have a fold up bike back on hitch and it's a solid beep whenever I'm in reverse. You can turn down the volume (like i did) of the beep on your display.

Sounds like the US version might be different. Here the backup sensors come as a part of the Driver Assistance pkg which includes the rear view camera along with the side sensing radar for lane warnings. Convenience pkg here gets us folding mirrors and interior LEDs. One thing I do like about the system is that the central computer screen between the gauges shows an image of the car which displays radar arcs to indicate you're getting close to unseen obstacles at the corners. Good at preventing curb rash when parallel parking.
[edit]... actually the radar display is show as a part of the back up screen, not the the center stack.

See, this is what I was wondering if the US/Canada version has this screen display with the radar arc, or if it's just a beeping sound.

so yours has the backup camera in addition to the rear parking sensors, I'm talking about the convenience package that can be see here http://www.audi.ca/ca/brand/en/models/a3_18t/options.html that has the rear parking sensors, but not the camera
Yeah, as I said above while the names are the same the feature groupings are completely different. Keyless is a part of the Premium Plus mode here and back up is part of Driver assist. We seem to get front sensors as well as a part f that which aren't mentioned for you. It all has to be pretty much the same core hardware in the end, but really don't know whats included in Canada vs the US. From the build info on the US web site the options look like this:
Convenience package

  • Power-adjustable, power-folding, auto-dimming, heated exterior side mirrors
  • Auto-dimming interior rear view mirror with digital compass
  • Ambient LED interior lighting
  • Interior storage package
Driver Assistance package

  • Audi side assist
  • Audi parking system with rear view camera
  • Rear view camera (front and rear sensors)
So don't know if this helps you or not, but here's what it looks like in operation. First shot it senses my Golf next to it and warns. The second shot the front sensors indicate I'm about to run into my garage door. I'm moving forward but its the same graphic in reverse as well.

Not a reply, more a cry for help. My rear sensors were working fine but quite suddenly they are playing up in that the audio warning sounds constantly as soon as reverse is selected. I have cleaned the surfaces but no change. Occasionally the sound cuts out whilst reversing and the intermittent warning beep operates properly but most times it is just the continuous beep which would continue until you actually collide with something.
Anyone got any ideas for a cure.
Thanks Ron.

No, but if you find one please do post. I'm having a similar problem, but with the side assist. It seems to get in a mode for minutes at a time the passenger side warning indicator lights up as if some one is there when there's no car (or roadside obstructions) anywhere near. Can be in the left lane on a six lane highway with no one within a quarter mile and it stays on. Hit the blinker and it goes crazy thinking I'm about to hit something. Annoying, but not as much as what you describe. My driver side always works perfectly. I thought at first it was related to frost or ice, but it now seems to occur regardless of conditions and again, only on the passenger side.

If you go forward and move toward an obstacle does the system work? If so, I suspect, as I do in my case, that its a bad sensor. Perhaps they got a bad batch of them and we're the unlucky ones. In my case, I figured I'd have it looked at it at the 5000 mile service, but in your case, I'd probably take it in an have them look at it now.
