So when i unlock the doors by pushing the button at the drivers side, all unlock and lock except the rear left lock. I can reach back and pull the lever to unlock and bush it down to lock.

Is it the actual locking mechanism or is the air pump tubing problem? or something else?

I'm gonna watch this one. My wife's rear driver's side door is acting up in a similar fashion. Right now everything is working, but a while back you'd hit the lock on the FOB and everything would lock except that door, and, the activation for the alarm wouldn't sound. I was thinking that maybe the door lock module, but there's very little out there on the rears (I'm now fairly seasoned on the fronts).

I think i read somewhere that the locks are controlled, locked and unlocked by a vacuum pump in the rear trunk area. cant find the link....

No they are operated by electric actuators.
You are thinking of MB's, they are vacuum operated

Also the MK3's have this. MK4 should all be electric.

You might look at the wiring that goes through the accordion. You might also look through the "stupid $3 door fix" thread. I doubt it's the switch from that thread, but it could be the solder joints in the circuit board in the latch.

I'm having this same issue and I'm reading a fault (implausible Signal F221) for the two doors presenting the issue (right hand side).

IIRC those doors had some water in them once after a particularly heavy storm so I'm with mjydrafter on this. Perhaps the mechanism needs some lube but the main trouble is bound to be electrical. At least in my case. Thing is I have a ton of work this week and the next and I have to troubleshoot my uphill starting thing first which I hope further advance this weekend.

If I were you I'd hook up vcds and check if there's a fault for the door. If there is, it's almost certainly electrical.

I'll note that in my wife's car it's storing a code for that door (can't recall what it was, but for sure it's related). I'm going to watch to see if it's a moisture issue (when the next big rains come). I feel that the stupid "window wipers" on the outside of the doors are kind of shot: lots of moisture seems to pass down and into the doors- can't be good; can't really find any replacements though.

That sounds easier to fix than my rear door locking problem. When my rear door won't open, neither the inside nor the outside handle will open the door even with the lock button UP. Drive car a few miles, hit a few bumps and potholes, and either (inside or outside) latch works again??

My driver door wouldn't unlatch and open from the outside late last week. I had to keep rolling the windows down with the key to use the handle on the inside. Saturday, I removed the latch, lubricated it, reinstalled it. Hasn't acted up since.

I recently had to replace the entire door lock on the driver's side. When I pulled it out, there was surface rust on all the metal pieces.

It was the rust which was impeding the lock from opening and closing in addition to a bad micro-switch.

Replaced the lock with a new one and all is well. I do believe the window rubber should be changed.

I just bought a replacement lock for my passenger's rear door but because it a real PITA to do, I'm procrastinating until I absolutely HAVE to change it.

I have a similar issue that I wanted to throw out to you all who have worked on lock issues. I tried to start the car, 2002 Jetta, on a bitterly cold afternoon without any frostheater plugged in and the car wouldn't start. I cranked on it perhaps more than I should have before giving up. Weather warmed up and the car starts up no problem. But now 3 out of 4 doors do not unlock with key fob. Only the driver's door unlocks with key fob. The passenger door and both rear doors do not unlock with key fob. When I press the unlock button inside the car on the arm rest, all doors unlock as they are supposed to. So I'm not sure why 3 out of 4 locks do not unlock with the key fob. And yes I press unlock two times on the key fob which should unlock all doors. Does this sound like anything in particular to anyone? Should I just start looking for bad electrical connections, broken solder joints? I checked all fuses related to central locking and they are not blown.

Best start a new thread, your problem seems different from jonc who first posted 2 years ago, but is still looking for help. His issue is definitely different.
Yours I'd look at the circuit from the FOB, since it works with the master switch. His doesn't respond to the master.

Get in the car. Close the doors. Lock and unlock from the passenger control. Fob should now work

Its the mechanism. The door lock/latch is a all in one unit. They are kind of a pain in the butt to replace, with the rear doors being the worst. I have now replaced all four of mine. At least in my car, their lifespan was very consistent. The driver door went first and then all the others stopped working within a couple of months. You can find them on rock auto for a reasonable price.

This is likely your central locking system. I had this same problem back when my car was only four years old. After much troubleshooting, the answer came down to either replacing the entire CCM or by recoding it (via VCDS) to just open all the doors on one button push. I did the latter.
