Rear deck rattle

My 2012 TDI SEL Premium developed a rear deck rattle/buzz when hitting potholes, or when playing music with decent bass. Seems to be coming from the deck where the speakers are mounted.

Anyone else?

Mine has it too and it's a bad, bad rattle....rattles like a GM product from the 80s. I've even had my 15 year old son crawling around in the trunk to try and find it...but no luck. Going down the road with someone in the back seat, they can press down on the rear shelf and stop the rattle....

It's the only disappointing thing about the Passat so far, so I still a happy owner.

Could it be caused because the rear deck is now made out of plastic, with no fuzzy stuff, like previous generations of VW's used to have?

I'm curious to know how many miles folks racked up before the rattle started, or got significantly worse.

Mine has it too. I think the buzz/rattle started after a few thousand miles. Ive had my car since Feb 29th, and now have 7k miles. It hasnt gotten worse, but its become more frequent. which I guess is worse, right? Its also my only dissapointment so far, and still love my Passat as well.

I first noticed mine rattling around 1500 miles. By 3000 miles it was much worse...and irritating. Can't wait to get it into the dealer to get it fixed...

Post from True Delta regarding a 2012 Passat owner's repair experience:

"Fixed annoying sub rattle in the rear deck. (this took many hours to fix because it required disassembly of the rear deck)"

I don't have the sub, but do have the rattle....

I noticed that mine started rattling a few weeks ago. I've got around 4500 miles on the car.

As a side note, my wife's 08 Honda Accord had a similar issue. It was coming from the rear brake light on the rear deck just above the trunk. If I put pressure on that area the rattle would stop. The way I fixed it was to press a thin piece of packing foam around the light. That was a few months ago and the rattle has stopped in her car.

Mine is more obvious when it's warmer outside. If I play music loud enough, the bass can make it happen too.

When I bring it (soon) I'm gonna have 'em fix it.

The rear deck comes out pretty easy to be honest, just take your time and keep up with the clips. Get some dynamite and go crazy on both the top and bottom sides. I have a jl w7 10" in my trunk and notice no rattle or buzz.

:eek::eek: He must have meant "dynamat."

DIY about "rear deck removal"? Would it have helped my tint installer? I still don't know how he got the tint to the base of the glass...

Nope ment dynamite! Blow those rattles away! ......yes dynamat. Most tinters will actualy lay out the film on the outside of the rear window then trim it to size. Afet it is cut to size they install it from the inside and side it around into place getting it behind trim, weather stripping, ect.

Buzzzzz...

It's from the bass speaker that's mounted behind the rear seat inside the trunk. VW forgot to install some foam to eliminate the vibrations. Afterall this is not an AUDI.

Nope. I don't have the bass speaker, but I have the rattle. My rattle sounds very "sharp"...like something is rattling against the glass.

Maybe there are two different rattles going on with the rear shelf area...one that is involved with the bass speaker, and one that isn't.

Mine had the same rattle. The dealership fixed it during the 6K mile courtesy check. Invoice stated, “REMOVED AND REPAIRED SHELF AND SUB BOX. ADDED FELT AND FOAM RE-ASSYBLED. “

buzz from rear deck

I had same problem with mine from day one. I was able to tighten the 10mm bolts that hold the sub woofer up in trunk. Problem solved!

Had the stealership fix the issue with a "Rattle Kit". Apparently this is a know issue with the Passat. Here is the job code they used when they worked on my car: 02VWZ3

My buzzing rattle has nothing to do with the radio from the rear deck. On older paved roads(pretty much everywhere around here) it emits an irritating buzz.

I can duplicate the noise just by popping the trunk and tapping the rear deck with my hand.

Just had my 10,000 mile oil change and showed the dealer how to replicate the noise by tapping it with my hand. 90 min later no more noise. No more rattle.

Went to the dealer. He said there is nothing can be done about rattle noise. There are no kits or/and foam pcs that go under rear deck. Will be calling VW of America for more details. Is there a part number for that foam kit/pc ?

usarmy132: Save your breath. The sub is attached to the deck with 5 bolts, easily accessible. Install a large (1-1/2" diameter), neoprene washer between each mounting "foot" and the deck. Use some LockTite on each bolt. Problem solved, you did it yourself, and didn't have someone else crawling around in your car.

I asked about the part number that lawless tdi stated and they found that and something for where the sub would go if I had the fender system. The key is they have to find the noise. Can you duplicate it? I can't make mine rattle with by tapping my hand on the bottom of there rear deck anymore.

Noise update. Its back..It seems that it may be tied to the temperature. I can only here the noise in the morning and when the temp is 65 degree's or lower. It still sounds like it is coming from the drivers side rear speaker area, like there is a loose bracket there:confused: vibrating..The stereo is off so its not stereo/ speaker related.. Its so freaking annoying.
