Long read. 2015 Passat TDI DSG with emissions fix. Purchased September 2018 with 22,000 miles to replace my 2014 with 101,000 miles that I sold back to VW under the recall in December 2018. I have put 87,000 miles on the 2015 since purchased. I always drive in S - sport mode. I have never reset the Average mileage # 2. It shows 43.8 MPG for mixed driving. I live in a rural area and occasionally drive in city traffic. On long Interstate drives with the cruise control set 75 - 80 MPH, I average 49 - 52+ MPG. From what I have read, S mode lowers my fuel economy in mixed driving. Sport mode should not effect steady state highway cruising. It has been so good, I haven't thought about it much. I may just switch to D - drive mode to see how my mixed driving fuel economy changes.
I understand an automatic transmission with a torque converter would get significantly less mpg compared to a manual transmission due to the drag and slippage in the converter. At highway speeds the lock up function of some converters mitigate the slippage in higher gears. The DSG operates with two wet clutches (like most motorcycles) and has a direct connection from the flywheel through the gears. There is no torque converter. The concentric clutches drive two shafts. The outer clutch drives gears 1, 3, & 5 (and reverse.) The inner clutch drives 2, 4, & 6. The DSG weighs approximately 60 pounds more than the manual transmission. I'm just rambling now, as I tend to do, so I'll leave it there.
TMI?
Cheers,
Mike
