Chicago traffic...

35mpg street traffic.

On the highway its very different.
I went to Belvedere, 80 miles one way, last week and I got 51 mpg going and 54 mpg coming back.
Incredible!

Well, just did 1107km with three adults, two kids and a full trunk with the AC on the entire trip.

Averaged 42.2mpg

Love this car!

Have about 12,500 miles on the Passat now that was purchased 3/26/13.

Filled up 8/2 & 8/10 (#1-689 & #2-661 miles a tank with an 1/8th left in it each time) while taking a vacation to NC from PA and in between.

In all, we drove 1,350 miles and used 33.12 gallons of diesel with a fully loaded trunk (to the brim) 3 kids (ages 4,5 & 9) and 2 adults.

Avg 40 mpg over those miles and saved about $186 because typically we would take my Xterra on road trips with the family.

The car is practically paying for itself every month!

Just got back from a trip to Chattanooga from Central IL- trip down was almost exactly 500 miles, 75mph with the cruise on, Climatronic on all the way.....got 46 mpg, even with the DSG. Great mileage.

My first tank of gas came from the dealer. The needle was not on F when I picked the car up, it was about a line below. I went 602 miles on that tank when I filled up, I put in just over 15 gallons of diesel, so my combined was around 39.89MPG

I just refilled my tank today, and I had gone 406 miles, and pumped in 8.8 gallons of diesel. That came out to 46.1MPG. I'd estimate about 70% highway, and 30% city on that tank.

Extremely pleased with how far this car will go. I'm driving a 2013 TDI SE with Sun/Nav, so the 6 speed DSG automatic.

Finished my first (dealer fill up) tank today. I'm sure they don't top it off like I do. Anyway 633 miles and pumped in 16.057 gallons for a not too shabby 39.42MPG. We'll see how it goes. IIRC my first tank on my '11 Jetta 6M was only about 40.xx. Considering this car is bigger heavier, rides better, and has the DSG, I think this is a good sign. One more tidbit, the MFI2 showed 38.3 for the tank. At least it wasn't optimistic...

I don't drive anywhere near enough miles per month to make that claim. I'm probably going to average 1,500 miles per month.

My old 2002 VW V6 got around 25mpg on average. My 2013 TDI is getting around 42MPG. The old VW used Premium, and of course, Diesel is just more expensive. I'm saving around $85 per month by my calculations on the diesel. Unfortunately, my payment is far higher than $80 per month.

1500 miles per month / 25mpg = 60 gallons of fuel x 3.70 = $222
1500 miles per month / 42mpg = 36 gallons of fuel x 3.99 = $143

I calculated that it will take me about 40,000 miles just to pay off the $2000 premium that the engine cost.

But I just love the fact that I can go 2-3 weeks easily without having to fillup. That's just convenient, it seems like this car always has fuel.

I just did a 60 mile trip from my house to my parents house. On the way there, I set the cruise at 70mph, AC on, 2 adults, 2 children and a little baggage and got 50.0mpg according to the MFI when I pulled in.

On the way home, I set the cruise at 65mph, had the AC off (it was cool enough outside that just the fan was enough), and we got 52.8mpg according to the MFI when I pulled into the driveway.

Most likely I would have been in a headwind on the way there (when I got 50mpg) and it was probably around 78F on the way there and 65-70F on the way back (52.8 mpg).

I achieved my best ever MPG and miles per tank this weekend...went from Lake Charles to New Orleans, then Memphis, and on to Nashville. Mostly with the cruise set at 70, went 817.9 miles (first tank over 800) and averaged 46.2 hand calculated (MFI read 48). Return trip was 734 miles, but I haven't filled up yet to calculate MPGs. MFI reads 48 again, so I'm expecting another 46.x hand calculated.

This was with 2 adults and luggage.

Interesting that Diesel is still more expensive where you live. It's been equal or cheaper by a dime here for a couple months. That wont last of course, once heating oil season kicks in!

Yeah, I'm in Michigan in metro Detroit. Regular unleaded right now is running between $3.39-$3.49....but diesel on the other hand runs $3.89-$4.09

So, its around 60 cents a gallon more for Diesel here in August.

We're in Central IL.... regular gas has been fluctuating $3.49 - $3.59 for the past few weeks. ULSD has been $3.79 here for well over a month with no change, but it's not necessary to drive far to see fluctuations to $4.00.
There's something in the tenor of all these diesel - gas price comparisons that has a kind of nostalgia for the days when diesel was cheaper than gas. In the era of low-sulfur diesel, I don't think we'll see that again.

48.2 mpg. Round trip from OC to Sacto and back. AC through the CA central valley breadbasket it was a balmy 113 at one point. Wife and dog in tow. So far anything greater than 49.5mpg is elusive.

I bought my TDI mainly because I live in Missouri. We seem to be one of the fewer states where diesel is rarely that much higher (15-30 cents) than regular. Today regular was $3.52 and diesel is $3.69. Of course, winter it all changes (50-60 cents higher). A few weeks ago diesel was actually 10 cents cheaper than regular. Rare, but it does happen.

I just got my TDI four days ago, but so far averaging 30-32 on short trips around town and 42-45 on interstate. For comparison, my GTI would get 22-25 in town and 30-33 on interstate wi premium.

Just dropped off the kids at their respective schools, a hilly 520 mile circuit. Overall trip computer average was 49.7 mpg with full load outbound. 125 mile return leg with empty vehicle gave 52.4. Even subtracting 1.5-2 mpg from the slightly optimistic computer would not have done better with my Prius.

We took our Passat in for it's 10K service a couple weeks ago, then my wife left for a trip to NJ to see family with the dogs. Several pit stops each way and the calculated averages are 46.3 and 45.6 respectively. Definately good mileage, but hoping one of these trips tips us closer to 50.

Second fill up today. 714 miles on the tank, 16.866 gallons consumed, 42.3 mpg. Not too bad for a second tank....

At around 4500 total miles, I'm starting to see 34-35mpg with 70-75% city driving. Haven't been on any very long trips yet. My last tank filled with 17.2gals after 593 miles. Every tank has seen an increase since I purchased the car new in March this year.

Looking forward to cooler fall temps and some more 50+ mpg tanks before cold start ups start impacting mileage again. Gotta love spring and fall; the sweet spots between A/C and cold starts.

DSG mileage after 16,000 miles

First let me say my wife TOTALLY DiGS this car! Coming from our '05 Passat TDI Sportwagon which netted @ 43 mpg highway and @ 32 mpg around town we already see the technology in action.
We have hit a maximum of 56 mpg on the highway with the highway average between 50-53 mpg.
Around town we are routinely at 37-39 mpg range. As soon as we hit the open road we are well unto the + 40-45 mpg area. The longer we maintain highway speed @ 62-65 mph we keep climbing into the 50's range.
Who in the he'll would the Prius "roller-skate" as my wife refers to it when you can have one of these bad boys!
VW is getting their asses kicked due to their poor marketing of the diesel technology.
We all "get it" since we own them. Others just do not understand like they do in Europe what diesels are all about.

400+ mile slow road trip, I hyper mile'd heavy, so heavy I got yelled at ALOT by the wife for drafting every semi possible and kept the speeds below 65, only used the AC for brakes on downhill's and made sure to use manual mode to keep the car from downshifting and killing my kinetic energy- The MFI showed this when we returned, granted we had just descended from a 7,000 foot elevation. we still had a lot of fuel left so I let the wife drive it to work for 3 days. Whoops, big mistake as im sure she killed my amazing average but still netted 51 MPG and im pretty sure I topped it off way better than the guy did at the start of our trip. (no self service) So worst case is 51 MPG when driven super eco friendly.

I don't think I would accuse VW of poor marketing. People "know" that these TDi's get 40+MPG, but up till now in the states people generally speaking don't want to deal with a diesel unless it's in a pickup truck. And people in the states often focus on horsepower, so they certainly aren't blown away when they see a diesel's numbers...they don't understand torque.

I've talked to quite a few people at my job who are very impressed with the size of my car and the mileage that I am getting, but for many as soon as I say it's a diesel, they are like, 'oh, well I guess it was too good to be true". This isn't hocus pocus, just pull into a fueling station and put diesel into it. It's pretty straight forward.

I think this opinion will change as more and more diesels come out. With the Chevy Cruze, the Mazda, the Grand Cherokee all coming out with diesels, people will start to realize they have a choice.

Yup, the old Smokey diesels of the past still pelage us to this day- although it was just 5 years ago when I was driving my 85' Golf diesel to work and had a tank of B99 in it with a bad glow plug, smoked out the entire parking lot just as my Regional manager pulled in.
*edit, how on earth do I remove that purple frown?

I just get them to drive my car and to not be easy on the throttle. When we're done going for a spin, I ask them what do they think is under the hood for an engine ie cylinders, hp etc.

They usually come back with a six or eight cylinder 250+ hp engine. Then I fill them in on what it actually is. Their mind is usually boggled.

I explain that you feel torque, not horsepower...the lightbulb usually goes on at that point. Then I look up their cars specs and compare numbers with them.

There is usually an "ah ha!" moment.
