Okay, so I just got back from our trip out to the midwest and back.

Starting Odometer: 465 miles
Ending Odometer: 3771 miles
Tire Pressure: 44psi all around on Hankooks

Trip Tanks
Miles Gallons MPG MFI Speeds Notes
Tank 1: 516.4 11.918 43.3 46.9 55-60 pulling 500lb trailer
Tank 2: 670.2 15.523 43.2 46.6 55-60 pulling 500lb trailer B5
Tank 3: 799.3 16.207 49.3 49.8 60-65 55 miles to zero
Tank 4: 853.7 16.987 50.3 53.8 70-75 35 miles to zero

I think the MFI was actually fairly accurate the last tank, I'm just not that accurate at getting the same amount of fuel in the tank every time. I'm still not getting more than 17 gallons in the tank, but I'm not willing to go down to zero, 800+ miles on a tank is plenty.

Nice! Loving the looks of tanks 3 and 4.... pretty normal for trailering, messes up the clean aerodynamic Cd of the car. You are well on your way to a 52 to 54 MPG tank one of these times... 500 miles per tank if you felt you did a good job knocking down the MPG's on a tank.

Gregg,

Are you still driving a 50\50 split or something like that?

Gregg,

Probably 60/40 most of the time, and my 40% "city" is a 20 mile section of road that can have 8-10 stop lights, meaning 0-70 & 70-0 which really kills mpg's...BUT, there are times where I may only hit 1 or 2 lights then it really isn't much of a mix and I can see 54-58 mpg's on my computer over 45 miles. And on this tank I ran more highway than usual so that helped. Funny thing is today I had one of my worst days on the road fuel economy-wise, MFD reported 43 mpg's, now I was in bumper to bumper traffic off and on for 25 miles, but it will take something to pull off anything more than 47-48 for this tank after such a bad start.

Hey, ya wanna sell that car of yours?
OK Niner, you don't make me laugh very often, but that was funny ;)

Yeah, the wife loves the Passat as much(or more) than I do, I've been trying to convince her that it is smart to sell it, Eh, not gonna happen, guess I need to attend some more sales classes...lol

the wife and I are heading out to Laguna Seca for the historic races in a few weeks. I think we are going to do our own "how far can you go on one tank in a Passat" short movie for the hell of it.
It's not going to be anywhere near the total range for the tank (maybe 750 miles) but with mixed in city driving it should be a good test.

Plus video of some Ferrari 250 GTO's to throw in there shouldnt hurt at all....

:D

325 miles, 6.48 gallons. 50.0 MPG, 50% city, a few drives to some mtn bike rides in there too with the mtn bike on back screwing with the aerodynamics of the car.

It looks like I will get about 50MPG driving to work and back. My last car a 2009 Sonata 4 cyl got about 32 MPG on the same route.

I am pleased.

Hi, I just refilled my first full tank after picking up the car from the dealer. Fuel warning light came on at 913 miles, filled up at 939.2 miles, MFA indicated 56.8mpg, pen & paper/Fuelly calculations came out to 56.0 mpg. Over 90% of my driving is highway and most of that is at night, so I can drive the speed limit without getting run over. Tire pressure set at 40psi, VCDS used to adjust miles/speed to be more accurate and not read lower than actual.
Amazing the economy a car this size can get. :) Now if I can just get rid of these noisy Hankook tires I will be all set.

First full tank

Break in semi aggressive driving. 60% highway 40% city 44mpg I am very pleased with the mileage.

The electronic mileage readout said 47 MPG quite a difference.

***DISCLAIMER*** I am using Drivbiwire's Break-In procedures... car seems to be better when I do!

First fuel up: 35 mpg hand calc'd. 100% city
Second fuel up: 38 mpg hand calc'd. 60% city 40% highway (hammered the throttle)

1000 miles on the odometer now... keeping my rev's steady @ 65-70 mph produces an MFI reading of 50.1 mpg...

No cruise control used thus far... just a steady right foot while at highway speeds!

I picked my my new 2013 Passat last Tuesday with a full tank. After reading this forum I've been driving it rather aggressively not using the cruise control at all. I got 37MPG when I filled the tank with about 1/3rd left. Very good for the way I was driving it. I want to click on that cruise control when I'm out on the highway but am going to resist the temptation for a while.

Global average over 7,420 miles is 40.75 mpg
Breakdown:
1) On long road trips (400 miles), cruise at 77 mph mostly, A/C on, some construction along, my hand calculated fuel consumption was 46.96 mpg, 46.82 mpg, 45.40 mpg. Used cruise control a lot. Two passengers, 1 kid, and a packed truck.
2) Commuting to and from work in bad Chicago traffic, on the highway mostly, but much of it is stop and go, with AC on, I get between 39-41 mpg. It is a 40 mile commute one way in stop and go traffic on the highway, and it takes me 15 min to get to the highway. One to two passengers and empty trunk.
I step on it many times while in the city from redlights or on the ramps, however, once I reach my desired speed I will keep the car in high gear (6th at 40 mph+). Once on the highway, I usually behave and try to save fuel.

The trip was awesome..... Im in the middle of cutting the video for it. The only real issue is making the video short enough to be interesting. It looks like its going to be 20 mins long at this point!

ill have it up in a few days.... these things always start out simple and then get way more complicated than I wanted them to and never turn out as well as I would have hoped.

but....so what. If if a few people like it, that's all that matters

Yesterday I drove my M6 1550 miles. First tank was 100 miles city driving then 700 miles at 75- 82 mph and I got 48mpg measured. The next 700 miles was 72-85mph with lots of mountains and a 40 mile off road excursion on a dirt mountain road going 10-30mph. This tank is reading 51mpg with 200 miles left on the tank. The last tank was at high altitude. 6K-10k elevation. Economy seems much better at high altitudes/warm weather. Awesome road trip car.

Filled up from the dealer after 452 miles.. Took 12 gallons which is 37.6mpg, but it moved off full before I even got home from the dealer so im sure they stopped filling after the first pump shutoff.

MFD said 42, no cruise or freeway, driving per break in procedures.. My commute is 13 miles but if I time the lights its a 50mph road. Per MFD the passat is getting 4-5mpg better than my DSG JSW.

Curious to see what she will get on this tank.
