Got my first 50 mpg tank, and followed that up with a 49.
I like summer temps.
I like summer temps.
Sounds plausible to me, what makes you think that there was a filling error?First long trip. Mountains of North Carolina to coast of Virginia.
Filled till oozing out filler. Drove 425 miles, filled again till oozing.
7.7 gallons, 55.2 MPG
Temps 80s
Keep in mind that's from about 2000' above sea level to sea level .. Though a lot of up n down.
Could be fill error.

Dunno, just seems high .. Did stick to speed limit so 65/70 most of way.Sounds plausible to me, what makes you think that there was a filling error?
Well, 65 MPH is a great speed for FE. What do you usually get for MPG?Dunno, just seems high .. Did stick to speed limit so 65/70 most of way.
Will see how she does trip back.
20 in my Acura RL or 28 on highway.Well, 65 MPH is a great speed for FE. What do you usually get for MPG?
I think the up and down helps. Powering up keeps the engine closer to peak efficiency, then you get to coast down.First long trip. Mountains of North Carolina to coast of Virginia.

All fuel used while idling is wasted. It is amazing how much fuel gets wasted when you idle for long periods!
One thing missing from this analysis is the resale value. I suspect some of that premium paid for diesel, maybe all of it, will be recovered on resale. Try to sell a gas-engined car with 200k miles on the clock. Might as well drive it to a junkyard; while resale on a diesel is not that unreasonable. I got $4500 IIRC for a B4 wagon with 216k...So, if the TDI option raises the price only $1,000 (and it's usually over $2k more), that means your payment is going to be $16.67 more for the month. So that's 2x more for the payment than you are saving in the fuel costs.
After almost 40K miles in this car there are two things that drastically decrease my MPG.I won't argue that cold doesn't matter, but I will say that despite temps in the low 40s, my MFI showed mileage the past two days as high as most I got in the summer (~53MPG on MFI, so probably ~50.5 MPG actual based on typical fuel receipts). The difference these past two days was that I left early each day and missed the rush hour traffic. (In Seattle it's dark for most of the day now, and frequently raining, so everyone slows way down. Also, there's school traffic that doesn't exist in the summer. Basically, traffic sucks.) That made me think that perhaps the big increase in traffic has as much or more to do with my mileage than the cold, which admittedly isn't as severe for me as for someone like psd1. Anyone else notice the same?
I have zero reason to embellish my MPG. My commute is mostly rural/55 MPH highway and the TDI Passat with the 6 Manual is the perfect tool for my needs. I am the only one who has ever filled the tank in my car, and I always fill to the brim. All of this info is easy to read on my Fuelly link. Are you folks with 50+ for real? I'm quite happy with my 2013 M6 but since the beginning, I've been getting ~36 mpg no matter what I do, city or highway, unless I super-baby the throttle on a long highway trip, coasting down freeway hills, etc, in which case I get ~40-41. Is it my vehicle or are folks exaggerating here? (I assume not).....
Yes Sir!Can you fill to the top of the filler neck on the Passats?
I know I am for real, I don't think I have ever seen below 45mpg. 90% of my driving is on the highway, at the speed limit. High speed kills... your mpg's, low temps kill your mpg's, stop-n-go kills your mpg's. I also run my tire pressure at 38psi. I am the only one who fills my car, I do find that my mileage is still improving with 60K miles on the car. In the winter my snow tires kill 3-4 mpg's. All my fillups are posted in my fuelly account. Are you folks with 50+ for real?
