Well --- looks like I'm buying my new pellet stove much sooner than i thought.
Before committing to a pellet stove, look at the environmental impact that processing the pellets has. Worse than just harvesting the trees and using the scraps to burn. When I used wood for heat, we bought several cords worth of blanks (IIRC). The parts of the tree that could not be used for lumber.

We call those mill ends, or slab wood. Most of the larger mills sell their waste off for bio mass or in the case of the hardwood mill up the road, sell their scraps and dust to a company that makes pellets. We used to get their slab wood for free and they were happy to be rid of it. Back to killing trees to heat the house.

Was going to accept a free (rebate) heat pump this year, but they still haven't set up the program... So maybe I'll buy another wood stove, take the 30% tax credit, and stash it away in case they're outlawed. Gonna have to have a talk with my state AG 'bout this...

So I just got a letter from a LSPOWER Grid Maine out of Chesterfield, MO in regards to the Aroostook Renewable Gateway Transmission Line project. I hadn't heard of it either, but it aims to bring wind power from Aroostook county in northern Maine down to the capitol area. Looks like the proposed route will take it across a remote area at the very back of my property. It's a narrow strip of land that's separated from the bulk of my property by a sizeable peat bog. Right on the back line actually. I think I'm about to get acquainted with eminent domain. I believe the standard procedure is to pay the landowners 1.5x fair market value for property taken. Who determines what the fair market value is I don't know. It looks like it would just be an acre or two of my land. Anyhow, there's a meeting for affected landowners on the 20th of this month, so I'll know more after that. Should be interesting, at least for me.

Well, those are the Q1 sales figures, so things may have turned around in Q2.
Unfortunately not.

2023 US ID.4 Sales:
Q1: 9,758
Q2: 6,690

Probably because of the stop sale and recall (door handle issue). Also, VW has been raising prices and de-contenting the ID.4 at the same time that Tesla was dropping prices on the Model Y.

I'd like to see VW sell a smaller EV in the US, but that "Volkswagen is firmly an SUV-driven brand; they now account for 85 percent of sales" statement doesn't make it sound likely.

Get ready for a fight... 1.5x value is optimistic at best. You'll be best off doing your own research to find fair value, ie getting an appraisal done/contacting a property advisor to give you an estimate. Best case scenario, is the land is still yours but they get a right of way added. Which isn't terrible. That happened to my parents with a high power transmission line that now goes through their meadow.

I'm hoping a fight won't be necessary. I support building the infrastructure to transport renewable energy. The proposed route is sort of ideal in regards to my own property also- not cutting right through the middle of prime acreage. An easement and fair compensation is what I'd like. It may not intrude onto my property at all, which would also be fine.

Free electricity for life?
One of my now deceased neighbors worked as a pole inspector for Central Maine Power and actually got that deal. I remember going over in cool weather and the electric range would be on with the oven door open, lol. His real passion was narrow gauge rail though, and he was instrumental in restoring several steam locomotives, cars, and a length of abandoned rail.

It depends on who is doing the eminent domain. I was an expert witness in eminent domain cases for a state agency. We would make an offer based on what our appraiser said. If you rejected it we would post a bond in that amount , take possession of the land, and see you in court while construction is ongoing. The biggest adjustment that I have seen to avoid court expenses is 115% of appraisal.
Private utilities are different. They can still take you to court but they can’t take possession until after the court case is concluded. That makes them slightly more likely to offer more than appraisal but they risk your case setting an example for the other property owners.

I'll know a lot more of the details after the public meeting with the LSPower representatives on the 20th.

In other news, Mercedes is the latest manufacturer to announce it's adopting NACS for N. America:

Nice. Looks pretty good. The spoiler is a bit ridiculous, though. They must be taking design cues from the Civic type R.

I mean to each their own. Gives this generation a little more character but still very understated. Not even close to the type r...

I saw the Polestar 2 is getting a refresh. Already available in Europe. More efficient engine. Larger battery. 310 mile range, but that’s probably on a Euro cycle.

That's a 20th Anniversary version, right? The spoiler looks much more subtle on the VW site: I think the angle and black makes it look bigger than it is.

I think about getting one of those, but then I drive my refreshed and paid for '99.5 Golf TDI and think maybe I'm OK with that.

There are just too many to list....
A GTI was one of the "alternatives" I presented to my wife instead of the Mini. But she was worried that it would become 'my' GTI, and she's probably not wrong. It is best for me (and the local law enforcement) I just stick with my TDIs, LOL.

I've yet to drive on the Golf 8 versions, though. They have a really menacing stance to them, and the lights make them look really aggressive. Look fast sitting still.

Of course, couldn't dare drive one every day, as the specter of the EA888's "what's next to break" would be too great. The latest is the extended warranty on the water pumps, of course there is not any actual improvement to the water pumps [yet]. But boy they run good. The R is an awesome car, and not just saying that as a Volkswagen fan, or a Golf fan.

The over 300 mile number is the single motor. The US spec dual motor is going from 260 epa combined to 272 epa combined and that's mostly from going from a 78kwh pack to a 82kwh pack

Yep the 20th. I feel like the pictures make the spoiler look larger than in person. Like it's noticeable, but not really. All I can say is wife is absolutely thrilled she was hoping it wasn't a "dont meet your heroes" moment. But it wasn't the test drive she did once paperwork was locked in didn't disappoint even a little bit. She tends to be a very level person, like not much gets her visibly shaken, and she is very hard to impress and well she was pretty much gritty, euphoric even, and down right PUMPED, almost couldn't contain herself after the test drive.

Also looks like EV sales are having issues...

Just did another trip to Utica, NY to run the Boilermaker road race. Great Italian food in that town, too.

550 miles, 147.5 kWh consumed = 3.7 miles/kWh

Charges

1. Lee, MA (25 minutes, $13.53) - I charged longer than necessary so I'd have some to spare while we were in town for the weekend (no motel charger this time) and made the rookie mistake of pulling into a spot shared with an occupied adjoining spot. You can see where the other driver left.

2. Utica, NY (23 minutes, $17.20) - Just before leaving to head home.
1689040023336.png
3. Palmer, MA (10 minutes, $13.12)
1689040179161.png
So including the $8.60 that it cost for my wife to charge it back up at work today, it cost $52.45 for 550 miles, which comes out to 9.5 cents per mile.

The odometer is at 6,600 miles so it's time to rotate the tires. Here's the Model 3 maintenance schedule:
  • Brake fluid health check every 2 years (replace if necessary).
  • A/C desiccant bag replacement every 4 years.
  • Cabin air filter replacement every 2 years.
  • Clean and lubricate brake calipers every year or 12,500 miles (20,000 km) if in an area where roads are salted during winter
  • Rotate tires every 6,250 miles (10,000 km) or if tread depth difference is 2/32 in (1.5 mm) or greater, whichever comes first

Looks like a good time! Did you run the 5k or the 15k?

The 15k. Not proud of my time this year, but I finished. My wife and 13 year old daughter (longest run for her ever) both beat me by over 16 minutes.

We've done the race over 20 times (yes, the food in Utica is that good :) ). My dad used to go with us and watch our daughter while we ran. In 2020 it got cancelled because of COVID. My dad's health started to decline around that time so in 2021 and 2022 he stayed home and she and I ran the 5k while my wife ran the 15k. This year we were all able to do the 15k. It's a fun, really well organized race (I think this was the 47th year) and it ends at a brewery.
