Ok, I'm very close to picking up a MKVI Jetta TDI. As previously mentioned, I'm very new to VW so I don't have a historical knowledge of the HPFP and DMF issues so I got a couple questions.

1.) I read that the HPFP issues were more common with '09 models and statistically, the issues have NOT been as common in '10 and newer TDI's. It also seems like the DMF issues are also more common with slightly older TDI's. Do you guys feel it's because VW fixed the issues somehow? or is it just the fact that '10 and '11 TDI's just haven't been in the market as long.

2.) If a TDI will get these issues, will it most likely occur within the 3yr/36K warranty? or has the issue been random as far as the miles are concern?

3.) Any other high cost potential known issues with TDI's?

I completely understand that every form will have (for the most part) dedicated car lovers who love their cars and take good care of them and try to help others out, and newbies who come on and post when they have problems. I've seen this with the elantra forums, cruze eco forums, prius forums. The problem it seems is the HPFP and DMF issues are not just potential thousand dollar fixes, they can get up to $8,000 or more. That's a tad worry-sum even tho the percentage might be small.

Any additional words of confidence or support you guys can give me before I pull the trigger? :D

if you are concerned with potential issues, you could alway by the extended warranty for some extra security.. i went with the 6yr 100,000 warranty so the car is covered until after is paid off.

Just remeber that this fourm is only a small portion of tdis sold world wide right...so for every bad hpfp and dmf there will be couple 100 that are fine.

Neither of these issues scare me, mostly because our fuel up here seems better havent read many canadians with issues.

I may consider that...thanks to everyone on this forum, at least i know now what the actual costs to the dealers are so I won't get bent over when I haggle with them on that...thx all.

I think you're right man...i mean if you think about it, if it was THAT big of a problem, in this day in age, the issue would go viral and VW would have a big issue with the NHTSA. They can't afford to have big quality issues if they plan to conquer the world.

And don't forget, we're 10x your population so that means we're also 10x more likely to complain about an issue :p

Let me add a couple of questions.
5..The 09s failed more often because no one knew how sensitive they were to fuel. Due to the learning curve everyone now looks for the best places to buy fuel and so: (Is it the later models are better, or is it later owners buy the freshest best fuel?).
6..As the HPFPs get older will the coating of the roller holder in the HPFP finally wear out and the percentage of roller gall increase as they hit 100,000 miles?
7..Do the later drivers actually use BIO as an additive without announcing to the world what they are doing. Are additives helping some or are the HPFPs better, or both.
8..Did the folks that were running the cars to almost empty decrease, and thus the risk of running hot loop air laden fuel decrease and fewer faillures occur?

VW is under investigation from the NHTSA for the HPFP issue

Here's the link for the NHTSA:

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/acms/docservlet/Artemis/Public/Pursuits/2010/PE/INCLA-PE10034-6542.PDF

They explain in the bottom that they have improved the robustness of the 2010 and on model year's fuel system to handle poor quality fuel better. Which has resulted in a decrease in failures from 0.53% to 0.11%. Those are pretty good odds that you will not have one that fails. Just use high quality fuel. I add about a gallon of biodiesel per tank to my car which helps boost the lubricity of the fuel.

A DMF will fail, it's just a matter of when. Looks like it won't be until >80K > 100k >150K >200+K who really knows with what VW is installing these days. There has been almost zero early failures within the power train warranty that I've heard. Some early clutch failures (10-20K) that weren't pegged as DMF, they just went bad.

So for as far as the DMF goes it's all amater of how much you drive and how long you want to keep the car, then go SMF and forget about it.
