Over the past several years, we’ve heard plenty about diesels — especially that they’re quieter, more civil, and smoke-free, and that they no longer bring a performance penalty. In Europe, though, there are quite a few models that bring better performance than their gasoline counterparts. Just a short drive in two high-performance, Euro-spec diesel sedans — a 2007 BMW 535d and a 2007 Audi A6 SE 3.0 TDI quattro — this past week was enough make our feelings about diesel a little warmer yet.
Both cars are part of a Bosch demonstration fleet primarily brought over to promote the current state of diesel technology to regulators, politicians, and non-profit groups in California.
The A6 has what we would venture to say is the quietest engine of any diesel we’ve driven yet, including the E-Class Bluetec. The 3.0-liter TDI V-6 makes 233 horsepower — almost as good as the 3.2-liter gasoline direct-injection V-6’s 255 hp — while peak torque stands at 332 lb-ft, compared to the gas A6’s 244 lb-ft. Even more remarkable, the TDI reaches peak torque at 1400 rpm, as opposed to 3250 rpm. With the six-speed Tiptronic, the A6 TDI can dash to 62 mph in 7.1 seconds and to a top speed of 153 miles per hour.
The first part of our route took us up a several-mile-long, six-percent highway grade where traffic moves at about 60 mph. It’s sent several test vehicles into convulsive hunting, as the transmission downshifts and upshifts repeatedly to maintain speed. But the A6 tackled it quietly in sixth gear, with plenty to spare thanks to the plentiful torque.
Then we came back for a spin in the 535d. It was equipped with an M Sport package, which includes sportier suspension tuning, flashier alloys, a racier-looking steering wheel, and sportier interior trim. There’s a 272-hp, 3.0-liter common-rail in-line six underhood, with a very impressive 413 lb-ft of torque. The diesel six far outpowers the 530i, which makes 255 hp and 220 lb-ft, and even exceeds the 360 lb-ft of torque made by the top 550i model’s 4.8-liter gas V-8. By the numbers, with the six-speed auto the 535d can get to 62 mph in only 6.5 seconds and to a top speed of 155 mph.
While the A6 impressed us with its quieter-than-gasoline, unobtrusive, and faster-than-perceived nature (it’s easy to lose track and speed), the 535d knocked our socks off. The six definitely has more of that old diesel character, with a strident clatter just off idle, but at the same time it feels like an old big-block V-8, roaring away from stoplights with a seductive burly sound that sounds a bit like an old M3 at full roar.
American buyers are used to diesel cars as being heavy and mushier than their gasoline counterparts, with dull responses. The 535d — especially with the M package here — runs counter to that stereotype, with a tight ride, quick steering, snappy shifts, and the same dynamic feel you get with BMW’s other sedans.
We intentionally kept the windows rolled down on both of these models, and never caught a whiff of smoke.
In a rather short, aggressive driving loop of just a few miles, we saw converted fuel-economy figures of about 24 miles per gallon on the A6 and, considering the even more stellar performance, 25 miles per gallon on the 5-Series.
Bring them on. They can’t come soon enough.–Bengt Halvorson

I suspect there are plenty of us who are hanging on to our aging 1999.5-2002 TDIs in the hopes of some great new diesels coming out of Europe and Japan for the 2009 or 2010 model years.

Let's say hypothetically, BMW brings a diesel to NA that is all it is rumored to be, we need the public to stay oblivious for just two more years.
Why? Because I don't want to be on a six-month waiting list for my new oil burner. I mean, is BMW going to jump in with both feet and ship 100,000 of those bad boys right off the bat? Or will they be tough to find even without super high demand?

I am waiting for the Honda, Hyundai, and Suburu diesels to arrive. Don't get me wrong, I love the German character and handling, but even after I graduate (chemical engineer) it will be a while before I want to buy a $50k penis extension. I want something like the VentureOne or a Lupo to come in near $10k, for when it is too cold for my bicycle. I think that competition for the entry level market is more important that the uber-lux market.

I think $50k is a bargain for a penis extension. Think of the new employment posibilities...XXX star, adult toy marketing, pictoral book tour.

but seriously folks:

I think the upscale market is a more profitable market, so the upcoming Honda might be either an Acura or an Accord only available in EX w/leather and navigation trim package.

Yeah, boyz, it's time to wake up and smell the ...well, whatever you prefer. A few of us have already recognized this well-natured goodness a decade or two ago

Americans are due for another education. I still wonder how many are going to step up and learn.

Do you want to re-educate America?

What about a little of good old advertising?

(machine shop, wielders, biker dudes)

(voice of Lafontaine, the movie trailers guy)

In a World, of top engine performance and American ingenuity...What do you get when you throw a Duramax-style Diesel engine inside an American sedan?

The most powerful and manly sports car ever! Dodge Turbo **Diesel**

(images of new diesel-powered Dodge cars, with NASCAR colors, avancing Japanese-looking cars)

And, oh! it has great mileage too! So we do not need arab oil.
What do you think?

I bet people would buy diesel cars after that. Diesel sedans, the new "manly sports cars"

So, instead of V8 trucks, Americans would buy turbo diesel sedans. Ad then, maybe, we would get the Lupo TDi :D

If the states don't crack down on the diesel price gouging , nobody will buy any diesel cars. this is the first summer in the last 4 yrs that I see prices over $ 3.00 in some stations. what is gonna happen when winter comes ?

I have a cousin who sells BMWs. He tells me he tried a 3 series Diesel in the states recently. He thinks it is a sign that this will be BMW's deisel entry into the states rather than the 5. I'm all for it.

Except for one $50k model from Mercedes, diesel cars are *not* presently *available for sale* in the US. In other words, we are describing the prisoner who is talking about all the nice things he/she will do when he comes out, whenever that happens. Most Americans are right now in a low fuel efficiency prison.

Enjoy your TDI freedom!:)

Guys just a note to tease you a little,

I had the opportunity to drive a BMW 535D on the track.
Actually I ended up racing a e46 M3.

The power of the 535 is literally better than sex.

Although I can comfortgably keep up and pass my dad's 2006 X5 (3.0d) in my 7 year old TDI. (he has no idea bout the engine mods I have, he just thinks it's faster than it should be (I wonder why!!!!))

Sinner,

It's woman who make the majority who decide what will go into the garage, believe it or not. Not men.

So how about this one:

A harried mother of 2+ children - who are getting antsy in the back while she's filling up her mommobile with biodiesel - and the over voice announces that she won't have to do this but ONCE EVERY MONTH (if doing on average 1500 miles a month).

If filling with Biodiesel announcer could add how she'll be helping keep her money in the American economy, where it will do her kids the most good down the road. And how she's also making a difference using Biodiesel in reducing her co2 footprint, thus reducing the global warming that will continue to increase in importance down the road if we continue to experience "odd" weather.

Just a thought, BeetleGo

If she got the optional 40 gallon tank.
Thanks, you're right. My mistake. Average distance traveled in a year for most cars/vans is 15,000. That's 1000 miles per month not 1500, so the tank would be something like 25 gallons. Typical size tank.

:) Wow, man! Don't quit your job and become a mathematician.:)

Is that SAE miles, nautical miles, Imperial miles, Roman Catholic miles, metric miles, Mississippi public school miles, or what?

WOW!...where can I get a car that gets 1500 miles from 1 tank of fuel?!?!?!

My 2006 Jetta TDI will hold about 50 litres (13.2 gal US)...the best mileage I've ever had was on a highway road trip (From Newmarket, Ontario through Quebec, Vermont, Massachusetts, New York then home to Aurora Ont...with lots of side trips throughout, when the car was a mere 9 weeks old). I used 4 tanks and did about 3600 km (2160 miles +/-).

So... 200 litres for 3600 kms...Thats 5.55 litres/100km...or 41 mpg...or 541 miles per fill-up...That's still pretty awesome!

I haven't kept good records since, but I think it has improved now that its all "worn in".

I should add to the mileage story....I had one passenger and was FULLY loaded with heavy stuff..furniture, paint cans...yada, yada...1st week of August, A/C full tilt most of the time...also kept a pretty constant 125-130 km/hr in Canada (80 mph US)...in the states...generally about 80 mph there too, apart from the stop-start-touring stuff.

I can't wait to join the 700 mile club (or the 1126.541 club????? lol)!!!

Can I do this without modifications?

Um, not to rain on the parade, but... would this sequence include her rummaging around in the trunk for the PowerService bottle, running to peer at the odometer so she can mentally calculate how many gallons she needs, squinting at the bottle while she attempts to dose exactly X ounces of the stuff, spilling a few drops on her hands, and then accidentally splashing diesel on her shoes from the non-evap-controlled fuel nozzle?

I'm on your side, I support diesel and hope for its broader adoption in the USA... just pointing out that at this time it is still a fuel that requires a modest amount of dedication to use. Obviously these are solvable issues, but the industry needs to address them (IMHO) before soccer moms will be happy about diesel.

...by their own choice it seems, they insist on driving Lexus SUV's and other low milage "fashoinable" vehicles
the "crossover" vehicles are laughable, I enjoy watching the commecials stating "up to 30 MPG average" and believing this is a good thing?

At a Ford dealer I drive by every day they have a sign bragging that they have "over 25 cars with over 25mpg" on their lot. LOL! How hard is it going to be to sell the 08 TDIs when they can advertise "over 25 cars with over 50mpg" on the VW lots!

I MISSPOKE WHEN I SAID 1500 MILES. I MEANT 1000 MILES, WHICH IS QUITE DO-ABLE:

25 (GALLONS) X 40 (MPG) = 1000, RIGHT? NOT HARD TO DO.

I can get 800 on 15 gallons. With a 25 gallon tank I would die bdfore having to fill up! 1250 miles is nearly half way across the US. I would be able to cross the US on 40 gallons of fuel.
