Has anybody here had any luck buying a MKVI JSW from a dealer at a reasonable price?
I would like to buy private party, but usually anything below 10k is 170k+ miles, salvage title, or poorly maintained.
I found a great deleted 140k JSW 6MT at a dealership, but they are firm at 11,100 for it because they paid for the delete (in an emissions area). Not to mention it still needs a TB and they have 3 more TDI JSWs on the lot at equally ridiculous prices.
The annoying thing is that most dealerships want 9.5k+ for okay cars. Personally I think it's because most of them bought them for >8k at the crazy auction prices last year and they're underwater now.
I just want to own a decent TDI, I don't mind doing a TB or similar work, but every DSG seems to be neglected on fluids and manuals are even rarer. I understand dealers have to make profits and all that, but even the Audi TDIs I find are more reasonable.
I just want something for reliability, cargo capacity, and mpgs. Been looking to join the TDI club for 2 months, but it's a tight market.

So why would you even consider purchasing a car from this dealer? Run, There are plenty of Private party JSWs available. What ever you purchase, if you do not know the platform and know it well, get it looked at by a trusted Guru. Good luck with it.

Had to fly out to Reno NV to buy my most recent a3. It is what it is. Price I paid private party easily made up for the trip and paid for all the upgrades I did. Don't give up. Try autotempest.com

I mean it wasn't recently, but when I got mine 5 years ago I paid 12.5k and it had 28k mi on it. That was from a dealer and it had a CPO warranty + dieselgate

That's way overpriced for a car that can't be registered.

With interest, they lose more and more profit every month it doesnt sell.

Only a super sketchy dealership would pay for a delete on a vehicle they're trying to sell. Opening themselves up to a lawsuit and criminal prosecution. I'd give them a very wide berth.

Dreams do come true. Found a BEW Manual Mk4 wagon today for 1900. 188k miles. Rebuilt title. Ugly aesthetically, but sound mechanically. TB replaced at 127k. The guy said everybody was bothering him about TDI specific stuff since he posted it last night. 😄 I was just an hour quicker than the next guy.

I guess we should ask... is this a VW dealership, or a used car dealer?
Used car. I'm actually glad the guy didn't waste my time trying to negotiate and haggle, plus they replaced the battery and fixed a misbalanced tire when I pointed them out. Since I'm no longer in the market, here's the posting.

My guess is they bought it at auction with a busted DPF and just decided to delete it + readiness since it passed emissions afterward. They did seem to know that its highly desirable to the right person. For that price though...it won't be a wise person.

Still super sketchy. Did they make it very clear that the modifications they made are illegal for road use? Pretty slimy, if not. Not the kind of dealership you'd want to do business with.

They could tell I knew that it was, so when they floated the invoices by me they were like "here's the cost of 'that';)"
But yeah, once I saw the owner looked like a CMT version of HeavyDSparks I knew he was just interested in whatever auto loan interest he could generate and sell to the next collector.

I bought my 2012 JSW TDI in December of last year (~1,5 months ago). It was pretty hard finding a clean example to be honest. 72k miles, DSG, timing belt done, all DSG service on point, brake fluid, etc with corresponding paperwork. Got it for $8.5k, glad I went for the sketchy ad on CJ. Owner was 2nd owner and he was older, but enthusiastically took care of the car, and didn’t know how to make a clean CJ ad so I’m sure that helped me get it at a lower price.

Well over the years they sold about 30,000 Sportwagens a year, 9,000 of them manuals (per year). But most are now over 10 years old and many are in the junkyards due to the cost of repairs. Also the base wagons without the SR are even smaller subset.

Not surprised it took you that long to find a good one. The people who have good ones in good shape are keeping them (like me). What could one replace it with?

They come up once in a while on CarsandBids but ones with around 100k in very good shape tend to fetch $10,000 or slightly more.

This is why I hang on to my '15 GSW, even though I really don't need it. S trim, no sunroof, manual, and just about to hit 20K miles. I bought it to replace IBW when it finally gives up the ghost, but that day may never come.

I found this exact car while visiting family in Denver two years ago. Black exterior and interior, manual transmission, no sunroof, absolutely perfect leather interior with "Carbon" accents, and a brand new engine covered under warranty (somehow). Exterior had rust on fenders and rocker panels, dealer shipped me a new fender and I ghetto fixed the rockers.. Paid $9K for the car, it promptly blew two struts and one spring, so replaced most of the suspension, CP3 conversion, glow plugs, had to replace the wheels and tires, brake calipers, timing belt (Due to water pump), thermostat, harmonic balancer... So $5K later I have the solid car I wanted in the first place o_O

Prices are always all over the place on these right now. I've seen some great prices and some crackpipe prices, and a lot of it depends on the area you're in. I just helped my sister pick up a 2014 Audi Q5 TDI with 138k miles for $12,750 which is the same price that a lot of people are trying to sell the sportwagens for. And it was actually a dealership!

In contrast, I bought our 2010 JSW almost 4 years ago for $4,050. It was in tip top shape inside and (mostly) out but had 182K miles on it. The Toyota dealership that took it as a trade knew nothing about it, like myself at the time. 40K miles later that thing still runs like a beast after a few DIY projects (thermostat, TB, DPF, LCA)
