None for me thanks. All I know is what a miserable POS Dodge trucks are to work on after working on a Gasser Dakota.......................

My Dodge Dakota had transmission problems under warranty. That was fixed and I sold it at 120k with only normal maintenance. It has 265k now and the person I sold it to has had no major repairs. My 3/4 ton Dodge diesel I sold at 250k and was over 400k last spring. I'll look at the new ones.

My 2001 ram 1500 had its rear brake line rust and fail. If it had been one day later or a few weeks sooner I would had been towing a 22.5' boat! That's over 4500lbs towing without brakes! This was a known issue for that model. Probably more the fault of the previous owner (park rangers) who let mud cake up all under neath the truck.

That's said - I would trust dodge. But not so much a new unknown engine!

I finally gave in and started oilcoating my vehicles, as I hope to get more than 10 years out of vehicles from now on. That said, I still find it sad that such a critical item (brake lines) can be made from such failure prone material (untreated steel).

The only one the VM engine is new to is Ram - they have been running all over Europe for years.

Expensive payload! The VM Motori engines have actually been imported in off road applications since the late 1990's. Tractors such as the Antonio Carraro and Ferrari, used them for several years production. At the time, an off shoot of Detroit Diesel. They have a good reputation as a tough engine but like anything robust and simple you can engineer it to death and really screw it up with the add-on tier 3-4 air quality hardware. Time will tell. Those who have purchased the first batch are the "beta" owners!

859lb payload? I assume that excludes passengers...
Umm, no. This would be what this federally mandated sticker says: Combined weight of occupants and cargo shall not exceed: 859 pounds. Then if you add a couple options, RAM box, steps, etc, even lower.

GVWR 6800, curb weight almost 6000 pounds. It does include a full tank of fuel!

Absolutely! This engine is a game changer in this segment. Now, there are alot of postings below yours that complain about the price and the payload using a crew cab model with a short bed. I realize that this is not a truck forum, and most people do not understand trucks, so I will say this: Generally, crew cabs with short beds cannot handle as much as super cabs with long beds. As to the price, that depends on the equipment: there are cheaper versions then those shown, just like the Ford F150.

If I wasn't almost through buying my F150 out, I would jump at this truck in a heartbeat ....

So if I put my 7k horse trailer on it with 10% hitch weight I'm over weight as soon as I get in it to drive it!

Yep; welcome to the overweight & overpriced 1/2 ton market:rolleyes: Well you where actually overweight with just the horse trailer as the payload capacity does not include fuel, oil, and any heavy options you put on it.

Sadly most of the 1/2 tons have payload capacities similar to cars these days as most people buy them to do the job a car could. Ford, GM, and Chrysler have already let us know that 85%+ of their profits come from trucks & SUV's yet most continue to lineup and pay outrageous markups? Looking big and tough is enough to sell trucks these days.

I'll continue to buy used where the last one I picked up lost over 65% of its value in 3 years and I'd bet money it never saw a dirt road and I know the receiver hitch was never used.

I bought used as I couldn't imagine paying $30k+! Crazy money for something I arguably don't "need". [Still paid too much though.]

I thought I read someplace that this payload limit was from one particularly optioning of the truck (the worst case setup, also the most luxurious).

Ram half ton payloads are the worst by about 200 pounds compared to others. Typically equipped dealer lot V8 half ton crew cab 4WD for 2014 model years are:
GM twins 1700 pounds
Ford 1500 pounds
Nissan 1500 pounds
Toyota 1300 pounds
Ram 1100 pounds

These are mid trim level trucks, not even the Denali/Longhorn/Platinums. And Rams Ecodiesel weighs more than the Hemi by about 200 pounds.

Every 2006+ vehicle in North America has this sticker on the driver's door or door jam with what I call as equipped payload. This takes into account base curb weight, trim level, and options from the manufacturer. It does include all fluids full including fuel, but not driver or any passengers. This one is from my 2500 Suburban at 2051 pounds.

Anyway, I really like the Rams. I really like the Ecodiesel option. I wish Ram offered a heavy duty payload option like Ford in the half ton though.

It's a shame some of them can't carry 4 large adults!

After waiting months to get details out of the dealer, I was immediately struck with two major disappointments. I wanted a base half ton diesel work truck; long bed, two door, no rear seat. They told me the only Ram 1500 diesel is a crew cab; four door, full rear seat, short bed - with more options than I'd want to pay for in a work truck.
Strike one.
And the towing capacity positively sucks. Hell, my Porsche Cayenne Diesel is rated to tow 7700 pounds - and I've done it several times. My John Deere tractor weighs in at about 6000, add the trailer weight, and there's my 7700 pounds.
Strike two.
And in concert with the previous poster, my max payload (passengers + cargo) is 1488 pounds.
Strike three, yer out!

7k with or without horses? If that's empty I'd be looking at a 3/4 ton.

I've never been a fan of having a trailer having a weight any more than 50% higher the tow vehicle till I'm in a medium duty chassis.

Personally I'd love this one for even your trailer. After I got rid of the stock rear suspension and put one on to increase payload. Even if it didn't drive as well.

Ecodiesel is offered on Tradesman, 2WD, regular cab, 8" bed. 9,300 lbs towing. 1,583 lbs payload.
Your dealer is lacking in product information and is spewing misinformation.

But still a low towing and payload compared to the competitions base reg cab work trucks.

if you need to tow more then step up to a bigger truck! Most people do not need or will not tow that much and my not ever tow. Most will want this truck for moving stuff in the bed and a truck that gets car like MPG. Same as a 4x4 how many people actually go off road? Most never see any off road use most only use 4x4 for the occasional snow.

i think this truck will be great for most of the people that have or want a truck.

I educated myself and tow ratings are all over the place from roughly 6K to 15K lbs for 1/2 ton regular cab.

Ram 1500 diesel may not tow the most, it sure as heck delivers the most miles per gallon of any of the 1/2 ton full size trucks.

And I've not yet needed to tow more than 6K lbs, 9,300 lbs towing is much higher than needed for my usage.

When comparing tow ratings for trucks, the adoption of SAE towing ratings can not come soon enough.
