Yup, that did the trick this morning. Thanks! I hardly ever use the radio, so hadn't tried to reset it for a few weeks, so maybe the delay, or initially forgetting what buttons I needed to press (and pressed some other combos) made the radio think it needed the timeout, even though I never actually put in a wrong code.
So I need to leave the radio on 50-60 minutes and THEN see if I can make it take the code? I have a long drive tomorrow AM, so will go switch the radio on now, so it comes on right away and reminds me.

Same problem, almost

2000 Jetta with OEM radio. Battery went dead.
Now has new battery.
Radio displays "SAFE" and doesn't go into reprogram code mode (display of "1000")

I did NOT try to enter code on any other occasion. I'll try the "Leave it on for an hour" but has anyone else had THIS sort of problem?
Yes! I’m trying to deal with it now

Thanks for the fast response Gandalf! lol
Any alternative? Ebay just banned by account for no reason, I'm not going to use it never again!
