Radio Reception Is Poor

Hello! I've been posting a lot on here recently and I appreciate all the help. My radio reception is not great. I think it's possibly gotten worse over the years. From a little bit of research, it sounds like I should replace both the antenna and the base. I can buy OEM parts, but wondering if anyone has any experience with other options? Cheaper, yes, would be nice, but I actually love listening to the radio and want excellent reception. So more expensive is on the table as well.

I'll be watching this thread as well -- seem my radio reception isn't as good as it used to be. I had read about corrosion under the antenna mount, but haven't had mine apart yet -- hoping for some more info & pics.

Hi

I think the small screw on antenna makes a big difference.

I replaced the factory antenna with an aftermarket antenna that looks alike because my mechanic lost my original antenna ( apparently he works out of a small shop and by using a lift he worried about the antenna hitting the ceiling and breaking so he removed it )

Anyways, I have not gotten good reception ever since i replaced the antenna.

I do listen to the radio a lot but mostly music off of YouTube playlists played through a bluetooth FM converter so I don't listen to regular stations as often but I do need to get that fixed.

I may just bite the bullet and buy an OEM antenna.

As far as the base I'm assuming it's fine .... it's not like it's a high wear item ... it just basically sits there not letting water in and giving the antenna a place to screw into.

Poor radio reception has a few typical causes in the MkIV (and a search will reveal lots of good info), but corrosion within the antenna base is the most common. The antenna itself generally outlasts the base, but once the outer rubber coating on the ant starts to wear, it's a cheap and easy replacement.

Use only an OEM base and antenna (unless also modifying the system), as the aftermarket ones will have you back in there doing the job over again sooner rather than later.

There's no harm in replacing both the base and ant as wear items, but I'd suggest troubleshooting the system first, so that you don't miss a cause and have to go through the process again (trunk items out, C pillars and trim off, headliner lowered, wire released, bolt out, base off, etc.). A few radio reception issues include the wiring from HU to ant base, and some of this is accessible with the headliner lowered, other times water intrusion is an issue, also good to know if the headliner is lowered. Lastly, there are a few other maint opportunities with the headliner lowered or removed (especially if you have a sunroof), so my primary rec is a thorough search of the threads here. HTH.

Although the differences on the outside are notable, the quality of the little circuit board inside is very different- as is the "weatherproof" sealing. Clicking on the pic may lead to a few more pics from the swap. No pics of them disassembled, as other threads can show you the difference in quality of the OE base vs aftermarket.

I found a few components fell off the circuit board inside my antenna base.
I installed an aftermarket amplified antenna and had to add a 'power injector' (iIrc) for a while.
It worked OK but I thought it would look better with the OEM antenna.
Had to leave the 'power injector' at that point as I installed a Kenwood radio.

Thanks! I have a wagon... but probably still the same internally?

The MkIV's don't have too many variations, but I can't speak to the other years. The MkIV wagon is very similar process to the Golf, since they are both hatchbacks (and much easier than the Jetta for getting to the ant base).

My radio reception isn't good either. I have an aftermarket radio too. Previous owner installed an OEM GPS antenna base, could this be an issue?

There are quite a few causes of poor radio reception. If you have VCDS you might be able to run some diagnostics, and then do some troubleshooting. There are some good threads here from people who are better with the system than I, plus once you have an aftermarket radio the situation becomes a little cloudy, since the problems may be the HU, rather than VW related.

I also ran a wire from the antenna wire at the rear of the car and ran it out the back and on top of the roof for a while.
I used one wire from a old network cable I had.
Duck taped it down on the roof.
Worked OK until I got the replacement base.
