Anyone have problems with there 96 Passat factory radio locking up and not being able to unlock it with the code? Dealer says I need to remove the radio to get the serial number off of it to make sure it wasn't replaced and the codes are wrong.
Problem is, I don't have the special radio release tool (3316) to get the radio out.
Any help would be greatly appreiciated.

I just ordered a cd changer for mine and it came with the special tools to take the radio out.

very helpful - may sell you the tool or else try the dealer.

If your deck has 2 round holes on each end of the deck ,a ford removal tool will work. Also, a coat hanger will work just fine. Cut the u shapes off of the ends allowing 3 inches or so and use them ,but you must be very carefull that you do not push the rods in to far or you may damage the deck and make it very hard to get the deck out.
If the deck has two flat slotts near the top or sides it is more tricky. By inserting a flat piece of steel with an angle cut off the end you can pull the pins in toward the inside of deck releasing the clips on the sides/tops of the deck.
Yet I do agree that the correct VW tool is the best way of removing a deck.
Some decks if you drive around for a while will ask you for the code again.
Good luck
