I have an 06 Jetta and the black finish that covers the radio buttons is bubbling and peeling off very bad leaving only the milky white plastic underneath. I'm not sure why it's doing this. We've never used any cleaners on it. Has anyone had this happen? Not sure much can be done about it either. I'm just kind of dissapointed my 06 VW is starting to look as bad as my 97 buick.

My dealership replaces probably 10 radios per month because of peeling issues.

It's certainly not unheard of.

Delphi (and subsequently Vw) says it is due to the natural skin oils. They have started replacing the black button radios with silver button radios that are not supposed to peel.

I just had mine in to the dealer last friday to get my power window switches replaced for the same reason. My car is now 28 months old and we have just gone through a long heat wave this summer where the inside of my black car was like a toaster oven most days. The black coating on my window swithes started to flake off in sheets from the outer edges exposing the white plastic underneath. Evidently VW is aware of the problem and my service adviser told me that the cleaning solvent that was applied to the switches prior to the application of the coating prevented proper adhesion. VW will warranty them up to a certain mileage, fortunately mine was still covered.

Common problem, if you would have done a Search you would have found out this has been discussed many times before. The search & advanced search is your friend.

I did try the search and didn't get what I was looking for. My peeling only recently got bad and I'm past warranty 80K miles. I'll look into the aftermarket ones, thanks.

03 Jetta TDI Wagen small radio knobs split and fell off. VW dealer refused to warranty a radio. Owner(me) was not happy. Drivers door power window switch quit, dealer replaced it, 4 weeks later quit again, dealer said I'm on my own, car was still on warranty. Seat heaters that worked had to have a recall done to them, recall was done, seat heaters don't work any more, dash panels not completely reinstalled following recall. Sales folks at dealer used to call periodically looking to sell new cars, but not any more. Dealer service dept sends oil change specials periodically, I stopped there this spring and asked the parts man to show me the engine oil that they use in an 03, 04, 06 TDI Jetta, one container type for all three, but not meeting the 03 spec.
TDI.com started stocking the small radio knobs for my 03 this spring, if you contact them about the 06 knobs they may be able to do something about them.
